Chapter 348: Chapter 341: Survival after a Disaster
A massive radiance exploded from the epicenter of the shock wave, radiating outward in all directions, much like the glowing filaments inside a light bulb, emitting a dazzling brilliance.
As the shockwave expanded, all members of the Advance Team had prepared for the onslaught. Hiding behind a shelter, Luo’er could only hope that it could withstand the magical onslaught, because if he was hit by such an immense amount of magical power, his body in its current condition wouldn’t stand a chance.
Shockwaves, thermal radiation - the members of the Advance Team who had learned modern military theories understood how to protect against these. However, the outmoded forces of Otherworld could only resign themselves to fate in the face of such attacks.
In an instant, the explosion eradicated everything in the vicinity of the Otherworld Gate, both humans and buildings alike. The shockwave charged towards the members of the Advance Team, instantly catapulting three figures off the city wall, sending them hurtling beyond its confines. Immediately after, the towering wall also yielded to the assault of the shockwave, dissolving into a pile of true rubble.
Luo’er felt some consolation in the fact that the surging magic power was unable to penetrate the stonework, and therefore the shelter transformed into a barrier that could fend off the sweep of the magic power. Nevertheless, he was inevitably affected by the aftershock.
The intense magic power surged into his body, promptly shooting through it, placing a heavy burden on his already frail bodily systems. Luo’er opened his mouth and gasped desperately for breath, but no matter what, he was unable to draw in any effective oxygen. This strong suffocation made his head more and more dazed, until everything went dark, and he fell to the ground.
The explosion lasted less than ten seconds, but the quiet it brought lingered for several hours. When Luo’er took a deep breath and clambered up from the muddy ground, the sky had already darkened.
He wondered whether the dense smoke from the explosion had masked the sky. At this moment, the sky was enshrouded with dark clouds, and a steady drizzle was making the battleground damp.
With great difficulty, Luo’er stood up from the ground, then, leaning against the shelter, coughed violently a few times. He covered his mouth with his hand, only to realize that he had coughed up blood flecks. The light drizzle, falling on him at this moment, had completely soaked his dust-laden hair.
Having taken a few breaths, Luo’er confirmed that his internal organs were unharmed, and then checked his limbs. He was very lucky. The shelter had blocked the impact of most of the shockwave, the magical power, and the light radiation, enabling him to survive this explosion.
After a brief mental reboot, Luo’er finally cleared his mind, and, getting up from the ground, began looking for his companions.
First of all, he sought out Feliz, who was close by, huddled behind the shelter, her body buried under a thick layer of wet mud accumulated from the rain-soaked dust.
Luo’er crawled next to Feliz, then struggled to lift her off the ground. At this moment, Feliz had her eyes tightly closed, and her jaws firmly clenched. After checking her breathing and heartbeat, Luo’er was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief after confirming she was alive.
"Feliz, Feliz, wake up, wake up quickly!" Luo’er held her and incessantly called her name.
Seemingly hearing Luo’er’s call, Feliz fluttered her eyelids a few times, and gradually came to. Upon seeing Luo’er so close to her, instinctively, she reached out and clutched his clothes tightly, then weakly asked, "Am I dead?"
"Not dead, just fainted," Luo’er said.
"I feel a buzzing in my head, and my ears are hurting," Feliz said with a frown, while covering her ears with her hand. Luo’er noticed traces of blood in her ears, diluted by the rainwater.
"Aside from that, do you feel discomfort anywhere else?" Luo’er asked.
"My chest hurts a lot, and I can’t seem to catch my breath," Feliz’s voice sounded faint.
"You’re probably overloaded with magic power. You’ll feel better after some rest," Luo’er said, breathing a sigh of relief.
The main prerequisite for Magic Power Erosion is bodily injury, especially when major organs are damaged, then overexertion. The reason Luo’er’s body condition was poor was because he used magic when he had been shot in the chest, leading to erosion. As for Feliz, she was not injured: the damage was just due to the surging magic power rushing into her body’s systems and causing an overload. This wasn’t as serious as overexertion. Compared to Magic Power Erosion, this was a minor issue.
"It’s good if you’re okay, let’s get up quickly. We still have to find the others," Luo’er encouraged.
"My head is so dizzy, I just want to sleep," Feliz said pitifully, looking at him.
"Don’t sleep here. Let’s go back and sleep after we find the others," Luo’er said patiently.
"It’d be better if you could carry me back like this. I don’t even want to move," Feliz spoke truthfully, her body feeling quite uncomfortable at this moment.
"My body’s not in great shape either. Let’s hurry up and find the others," Luo’er said.
After sighing, Feliz slowly released Luo’er from her grasp. After briefly rebooting her brain, the sight before her eyes immediately left her stunned.
"Luo’er, the wall... the wall has collapsed..." Feliz pointed at the city wall, covering her mouth, and cried out in shock.
Luo’er was stunned for a moment, then immediately turned around. Only then did he realize that the city wall they had been guarding all along had transformed into a pile of ruins at some unknown point.
"Moumou...Yue’er!" The first ones Luo’er thought of were them, so he rushed onto the rubble recklessly, starting to dig with his hands.
"Moumou, Yue’er, where are you..." As Luo’er ran, he called the two’s names with a trembling voice. His face was covered in dirt, and the bandage on his eyebrow slowly bled watered-down blood due to the rain.
Not far from Luo’er was Hu Daoke, who had just woken up. He lay on the ground, his body covered in a thick layer of dust, which, soaked by the rain, made him appear as though he was lying in a grave.
He forcefully shook his head, shaking off the soil on it, then struggled to prop up his upper body and shake off the soil on him.
"My goodness, my grave is all set." Hu Daoke muttered, strenuously pulling the lower half of his body from the pile of mud. His light machine gun had landed not far away, its long barrel distorted by a rock, and even the drum magazine was dented.
He lifted his head and saw Luo’er and Feliz digging through the rubble not far away and instinctively called out, "Boss!"
"Little Ke, are you alright?" Seeing him, Luo’er immediately jumped in front of him and pulled him out of the mud pile.
"I almost got buried alive." Hu Daoke lay on the floor, breathing a long-awaited gasp of fresh air. The wet and cold rain pelted his face, making him feel alive again.
"Did any magic hit your body, causing any damage?" Luo’er asked worriedly.
"Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. I just need a little rest." Hu Daoke waved his hand, indicating Luo’er not to worry about him.
"Alright, rest up and hurry over here to help me find Moumou and Yue’er," Luo’er said.
"What happened to Sister Moumou?" Upon hearing Moumou’s name, Hu Daoke immediately jumped up from the ground and asked anxiously.
Luo’er said nothing but pointed to the ruined city wall. Seeing this, Hu Daoke forgot about resting; he leaped up from the ground and sprinted to the rubble, beginning to search for the two of them.
"Sister Moumou, Sister Moumou, and Yue’er, where are you guys? Please, don’t scare me... Are you under my feet..." Hu Daoke has a fragile heart that contrasts with his outward appearance. Unlike Luo’er, who managed to remain calm, Hu Daoke simply broke down. He yelled out tearfully while frantically digging through the ruins.
He dug through the soil and rocks forcefully and finally discovered a corpse lying facedown under a chunk of stone. Instantly, he felt as though he couldn’t breathe. With trembling hands, he reached out to pull the body from the rubble.
Luckily, it was just the body of an enemy soldier. Apparently, he had been hurled against the city wall by the shock wave and was buried under the collapsing wall. His body was battered with pits and bumps, and all his limbs were smashed. What made Hu Daoke feel fortunate was that it was not the body of Tangmo or Baiyue.
Looking at the body, Hu Daoke seemed to ponder for a moment, then said to Luo’er who was focusing on excavating: "Boss, if this body could be thrown to the bottom of the city wall by a shock wave, does that mean Sister Moumou could have been sent flying further?"
Hearing this, Luo’er instinctively froze and immediately stopped digging. Hu Daoke’s words made sense. Given that the city wall was destroyed by a shock wave, wouldn’t it be possible for the human body, denser than the stones, to be blown out of the city?
"Let’s go and look!" After being reminded by Hu Daoke, Luo’er seemed to have an epiphany. He then called for him to search outside the city wall.
Outside the city wall, there were low trees and dense shrubs, but they had been wrecked by stones of different sizes. Seeing this, the two couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
"Feliz, come here and help us search!" Luo’er turned his head and shouted towards Feliz, who was still digging.
"I got it!" Feliz nodded, then made her way over to them with difficulty after climbing through the rubble.
They began to search in the woods and soon made a discovery. Hu Daoke found a piece of cloth with a rune imprinted on it, confirming that it must be a piece of clothing belonging to Tangmo or Baiyue.
Following the direction of the explosion residue from where the fragment was found, Luo’er and the others quickly discovered Baiyue thrown into the bushes. Her clothes were riddled with holes, revealing her body. Seeing this, Luo’er immediately went up to her and covered her with his jacket.
