Chapter 222 - 215: Father’s Diary

Chapter 222: Chapter 215: Father’s Diary

The carriage was small and the ruckus between the two clearly caused the cart to wobble. Tangmo was still trying to calm Luo’er, seeing the situation, Baiyue bravely tried to intervene: "You guys, please stop fighting."

Just as she extended her hand, she heard a thud as a thick notebook fell to the ground. Both of them were stunned and turned their attention to the notebook which had tumbled down. If they remembered correctly, this should be something that Baiyue’s father left her.

Seeing the notebook on the floor, Baiyue looked very nervous. She quickly bent down to pick it up and dusted off the cover.

"Yue’er," Hu Daoke was poked by Cheng Ziang and then turned to her with a beaming smile, "Could you translate what’s inside for us?"

"Well..." Baiyue weakly looked at him with a troubled expression. In fact, she was overly anxious. The notebook was entirely written in Russian and none of the five, except her, could understand it.

"There, there, dear Luo’er, don’t cry!" Tangmo patted Luo’er on the back in a comforting manner as if she were his older sister.

Luo’er appeared quite embarrassed. He pushed Tangmo away forcefully, keeping his face away in a shy manner, "Don’t comfort me that way, Moumou."

After all, he is several years older than Tangmo. This hierarchy must not be disrupted.

"Yue’er, what is written in the notebook you have?" A pouting Tangmo who had just been pushed by Luo’er asked, suddenly noticing the anxious expression on Baiyue’s face.

"This is..." Baiyue opened the notebook, flipped through a few pages, then softly said, "It’s a diary."

"Can you translate it for us, please?" The moment Tangmo heard it was a diary, she instantly became enthusiastic.

"Well..." Baiyue looked at a loss, she turned her questioning gaze towards Luo’er, who was wiping his tears.

"If it involves any private matters, then never mind, no need to force it," Luo’er dried the tear stains off his face and spoke with reddened eyes.

"No, it does not involve any privacy," hearing his words, Baiyue quickly shook her head, then opened the diary to the first page.

"May 17, 2030, Paris, France..."

As soon as Baiyue read out the first sentence, Hu Daoke interjected, "Huh? 2030?"

"It seems like you have developed a rash." Cheng Ziang glanced at the red bumps on his mouth and spoke.

"All because of you!" Hu Daoke cursed loudly.

"If you interrupt again, I’ll shut you up once more!" Cheng Ziang threatened.

"I..." Looking at the others, Hu Daoke muttered, "I won’t talk too much, okay? Clearly, he’s the one who’s talkative..."

"Continue!" After taking care of Hu Daoke, Cheng Ziang turned to Baiyue and urged her on.

Baiyue nodded and began translating the text in the diary.

May 17, 2030, Paris, France

Although it rained heavily a few days ago, the temperature is still quite high. However, today is a good day. This morning, I received a call from UNESCO headquarters. They told me that I am qualified for a scientific research mission to the Otherworld and will embark on a journey to Australia in five days. We will be part of the third group going to the Otherworld for investigation, passing through the Otherworld Gate, to reach the mysterious Magic World.

I bought this quaint-looking notebook from a flea market, planning to write about my experiences and observations of the Otherworld in diary form. Since the disastrous defeat of the multinational forces eight years ago, all countries are deeply concerned about the unfamiliar world and are trying their best to understand what exactly "magic" is.

I studied Engineering in college, but honestly, since the war ended, I have been fascinated by magic. I really want to know what could have negated the powerful weapons of Earth’s industrial civilization. For this reason, I submitted an application to UNESCO to join the Otherworld investigation team. The application process was long, from the first to the second time, I never got the opportunity. Perhaps because of the ideology, those guys always disregarded us. Of course, things were simpler at home, I always worried that one day the federal security bureau guys would knock on my door, so I was considering whether or not to give them a heads up...

May 22, 2030, Central Australia

I took a flight to central Australia, and my superiors granted my request, allowing me to return to my homeland and then board a military transport plane to reach the garrison airport located in central Australia. It was said that the garrison area was modified. The 20 km diameter area around the Otherworld Gate was reassigned to the Australian government, who planned to establish a city here, named Ulysses City.

When we arrived, the city planning and construction had already started, and the entire area surrounding the Otherworld Gate was like a construction site. I saw the Otherworld Gate that had shocked the entire world - it stood tall above the ground, with ripples in the gate frame like those on the surface of the water, but brilliantly colorful.

The Australians had already set up customs under the gate, guarded by the police. After submitting the related documents, the police began to check our individual credentials. The process was lengthy and the sun here was scorching, hotter than Paris and Moscow. Just as I was about to faint, thank heavens, the inspection finally ended and we were allowed to enter the Otherworld Gate.

While cursing the customs staff and the police, we one by one entered the gate. Their bodies disappeared into the colorful ripples, and I couldn’t help but wonder what was on the other side and if those people would be able to walk out from there.

When it was my turn, honestly I was a little hesitant. But the people lining up behind me kept urging, so I mustered up the courage to take the bravest step I’ve ever taken in my life. The moment I stepped into the ripples, I felt as if my body was being torn apart, but without any pain. It was something like a black hole, where time and light were both being stretched, and my hand also seemed to elongate.

Just when I felt like I was about to suffocate, I suddenly smelled a scent that was beyond words. The scent was like that of a sheep pen, one of dung. Later, when time and light were back to normal, I realized that the view in front of me had completely changed. In front was a busy market street, where many small vendors had set up their stalls, and the streets echoed with disordered footsteps and the ringing of bells; the place was surrounded by buildings in a vintage style.

The pebbled road underfoot was uneven, almost making me stumble. A man with black hair luckily came to my rescue in time. He wore a badge around his neck, and I could clearly see the distinctive name: Dr. An Liang. Unlike the other members of the investigation team, he was probably the only one who did not reject me.

"Be careful, the ground is slippery," he told me in English.

I expressed my gratitude to him and asked if he would be willing to collaborate with me in the upcoming days. He happily agreed, so I made my first friend in the Otherworld...

As Baiyue read to this point, she suddenly stopped and looked at the others, seemingly waiting for an indication as to whether or not to continue.

"I heard that the third batch of investigation team made great progress and made a lot of important discoveries," said Cheng Ziang, frowning.

"How did you know that?" asked Hu Daoke.

"Idiot, the library at the academy has the information!" Cheng Ziang retorted, rolling his eyes.

"The third team consisted of 56 people, covering various fields, and had a relatively mature system. Many significant discoveries originated from this team, including in-depth knowledge of magic," Luo’er agreed.

"At least they wouldn’t classify Beastmen and Sub-beastmen as one group," Cheng Ziang suddenly thought of this joke and chuckled sarcastically.

"Classifying Beastmen and Sub-beastmen as one group was a mistake of the first investigation team, translating Beastmen as Orcs was also their fault. According to the Tasta language, they should be called barbarians," Luo’er said, nodding.

"We should skip some parts, or we will not finish reading by tomorrow," suggested Cheng Ziang.

"Okay!" Baiyue agreed. She turned a page, skimmed through it, and then chose a page to continue translating.

30th May, 2030, Otherworld

It was... I’ve lost count of how many days after arriving in the Otherworld, but it didn’t matter. That day we met a wizard from the Magic Academy, who introduced himself as Shariya Oscar, a great mage of the Church of Light. He said he was here at the command of his king to show us magic, and we would be fortunate enough to witness the amazing magic.

First, Shariya demonstrated their impregnable armor. A fully armored knight stepped forward, and Shariya instructed the mercenaries guarding us to shoot the knight with a rifle. To be honest, it was a crazy move, and I couldn’t even bring myself to watch.

The mercenary used the old Mosin-Nagant rifle and fired a shot at the knight, which led to a surprising scene. A pale light emanated from the knight’s armor, after which the bullet got deflected and hit a tree trunk, while the knight was completely uninjured. We went closer for a better look and found no scratches on the knight’s armor. The result was astonishing to everyone, as even Earth’s most advanced bulletproof plates can’t withstand firearms without leaving a trace.

Then, Shariya continued to proudly show off his impressive magic. He held a cane and walked to the center of the field, then raised the cane and began murmuring strange spells. Immediately, a flickering, spherical barrier enveloped him. The mercenary continued to shoot at him, but the result was even more astonishing. The bullet rebounded immediately after hitting the barrier, not even a pale light was visible. The mercenary was less than ten meters away from him, at such a distance, a rifle could entirely pierce through a person. Yet, none of this happened, it was beyond everyone’s expectations.

Overwhelmed, I finally understood how we failed in that war back then. As long as earthlings can’t pierce the Otherworld people’s armor and the mages’ barriers, Earth will never conquer this world.
