Chapter 221: Chapter 214: The Origin of Everything_1

Luo Chuan’s funeral, Luo’er spent asleep. When he learned that his father would never come back, when he could no longer speak to him, he could no longer suppress his emotions, crying until his throat was raw.

At the funeral, Luo Qishan leaned on a cane with one hand, cradling Luo’er in the other. His face appeared even more aged, to the extent that everyone worried Luo’er would slip from his grasp.

At the funeral, Lin Wei, dressed in civilian clothes, came to Luo Chuan’s body. Before the cremation, Lin Wei knelt and deeply kowtowed three times in gratitude for Luo Chuan’s life-saving grace. It was Luo Chuan’s sacrifice that had enabled Lin Wei to narrowly survive on the battlefield of the Otherworld.

After the funeral, a worn-out Luo Qishan returned to his office. It was already dark outside, but he did not turn on the light. Luo’er was fast asleep on the sofa opposite him, thoroughly exhausted from crying.

Luo Qishan sat in his office chair, chain-smoking. He remembered that he had quit smoking thirty years ago, but at this moment, he could not help but crave a cigarette. Not wanting to disturb Luo’er, he faced the window as the evening wind blew in, ruffling the long curtains. The cold moonlight spilled in, bathing his figure.

Luo Qishan was filled with regret. It was because of him that Luo Chuan had been assigned to the mission in the Otherworld. If he had refused the assignment at that time, perhaps this tragedy would not have occurred. Luo Chuan was not yet thirty at the time of his death, in the prime of his life, yet he fell victim to the accursed Magic Power Erosion.

Unfortunately, time does not turn back - Luo Chuan had already left him, leaving behind his only descendant, Luo’er. Even though the boy was a half-elf, Luo Qishan had never treated him as an outcast. He could never forget the sight of Luo’er the first time they met, where Luo Qishan had seen reflections of Luo Chuan in him.

A knock resounded from outside the door, agitating Luo Qishan’s recently-calm nerves.

"Come in!" he impatiently uttered.

The door opened, and a figure entered. Squinting, Luo Qishan saw it was Lin Wei. By now, he had changed into his military uniform, and the three silver stars on his shoulder seemed particularly glaring.

"What could be so urgent at such a late hour?" Luo Qishan asked gruffly, his cigarette in hand.

"There are some things I want to discuss with you," Lin Wei said, glancing at the sleeping Luo’er before continuing, "Concerning Luo’er."

"What are you planning?" Luo Qishan bristled at the mention of Luo’er, jabbing his cigarette into the ashtray, he stood up and asked sharply.

"Please don’t get agitated," Lin Wei raised his hand in a placating gesture, speaking sincerely, "I won’t harm him. Luo Chuan saved my life in the past, and I am not the kind of person who would forget such favor."

"What are you trying to say?" Hearing his words, Luo Qishan took his seat back and waited for Lin Wei’s explanation.

"What are your plans concerning Luo’er?" Lin Wei probed.

"I’ll keep Luo’er close to me, I won’t let anyone take him away!" Luo Qishan answered with firmness.

"But can you truly ensure that?" Lin Wei calmly asked.

"What do you mean?" Luo Qishan stared at him.

"The higher-ups are very interested in Luo’er, as you know. This child is the only successfully surviving hybrid of an Otherworlder known to the world. You might be able to protect him for the time being, but can you protect him forever?" Lin Wei posed the question fearlessly, challenging his gaze.

Upon hearing these words, Luo Qishan fell into contemplation. Although he currently wielded extensive authority, he was fast approaching retirement age. What would become of Luo’er then was something he could not predict.

"Just say what you want to say!" Luo Qishan could tell that Lin Wei had ulterior motives.

"The United Nations Different World Magic Research Center was established three years ago, and relevant institutions within the country are to be set up as well. They are curious about why this child was able to evade the curse and survive as the sole mixed-blood Otherworlder. What I mean is, even if the higher-ups do not exert pressure, those at the headquarters will try their best to acquire Luo’er for research. Rather than letting them..."

"Rather than what?" Luo Qishan raised an eyebrow, prompting him to continue.

"Rather than that, wouldn’t it be better for the Chief himself to initiate the application for this project, letting them conduct research on Luo’er in front of you?" Lin Wei proposed his real thoughts.

"You want those people to study my only grandson right in front of me?" Luo Qishan indignantly exclaimed.

"Chief, having Luo’er studied in your presence is better than having him studied in the hands of others, isn’t it?" Lin Wei responded calmly.

Luo Qishan was momentarily speechless. Indeed, as the only surviving hybrid of Otherworld, Luo’er would inevitably attract attention. It was impossible for him to raise Luo’er peacefully. For some people, his birth meant a world-shaking change, and Luo’er was such a person.

"Speak your mind!" After a long silence, Luo Qishan uttered in a hoarse voice.

"This is my proposal, please take a look!" Lin Wei said, conjuring a file from behind like a magician and placing it on Luo Qishan’s desk.

"The Origin Project ... " Seeing the file, Luo Qishan couldn’t help but raise his eyebrows.

"Luo’er’s existence has undoubtedly caused a huge impact. Everyone wants to know how he can live in both Earth and Otherworld at the same time. If we can decipher his secret and construct more children like him, raise them uniformly. This way, we will have a combat army that can operate both in Earth and Otherworld. When the next Otherworld War comes, we will have an absolute advantage!" As Luo Qishan was reading the file, Lin Wei announced his ambitious plan.

"I-I’ll think about it." Luo Qishan put down the file and said faintly.

"Chief, I hope you understand one thing. If Luo’er is not researched in your hands, he will be researched in others’. It is his fate inevitable, you have no say in his destiny. I hope you can understand this and give me an answer by tomorrow. I’ll take my leave!" Lin Wei turned around and left the office without looking back.

When he shut the door, Luo Qishan slowly closed the file, not daring to look at its content anymore. He slowly stood up from his chair and walked over to Luo’er.

Luo’er was still asleep, his eyes red, and his long eyelashes glued together due to tears.

Luo Qishan slowly squatted down and stretched out his trembling hand to touch Luo’er’s delicate face, his pained expression addressing Luo’er, "Luo’er, I’m sorry. I know you will hate me in the future, but believe me, everything I’ve done was for you. No matter what I do, you have to believe me, I will never never harm you."

With that, he leaned over Luo’er, unable to hold back his painful sobs. These days he had cried many times. The man who had been to war thought his heart had turned to steel, but he didn’t expect to cry over and over again for these things.

After crying for a long time, he slowly turned his head, staring at the document on the table, his eyes starting to sharpen, "As Lin Wei said, it would be better to have you researched under my control than falling into others’. Nobody can take you away from me, not anyone. Even if it means fighting tooth and nail, I will keep you tightly by my side!"

As he spoke, his face became more and more ferocious. In a daze, it seemed as if he was back on the battlefield, drenched in blood, his gaze sharp and terrifying, much like an abyss.

"Then, the Origin Project started?" Cheng Ziang asked.

"Yes," Luo’er nodded, and continued, "Two months later, my grandfather submitted the Origin Project to his superiors and it was approved. They demanded results within two years to confirm that the project can be implemented. They failed many times, but in the end, they got results. Two years later, in 2030, Moumou’s birth signified the full launch of the project."

Tangmo had heard more than once that her birth marked the full implementation of the Origin Project. If Luo’er was the revelation, then she must be the beginning.

"Head, um, weren’t you sleeping? How did you know?" Hu Daoke couldn’t help but raise his hand and ask.

"It was Wang Xu who told me. He witnessed the entire process of the project, from the return of my father and me from Otherworld, to the full implementation of the project," Luo’er explained.

"Damn, so Instructor Wang was so impressive, I thought he was just an ordinary instructor," Hu Daoke exclaimed.

Cheng Ziang quietly looked at Luo’er, asking the most crucial question, "So, you’ve always known what your grandfather was doing and for whom. But you still hate him, don’t you?"

"Yes." Luo’er nodded, then silently lowered his head.

"Ziang, don’t ask that kind of question!" Tangmo consoled Luo’er and frowned at Cheng Ziang.

"But your grandfather is really pitiful." Cheng Ziang said unfalteringly.

"I know, I know, I know he’s pitiful, I... " Luo’er hung his head, covering his face with both hands, tears trickling down through his fingers. He choked on his words, "I’ve always understood everything he’s done, but why, why is he so cruel? I just, I just wanted his comfort, why, why is he always so indifferent. I really, I really hate him, like a stone..."

"Alright, alright, let’s not talk about this, sweetheart!" Tangmo held him, patting him on the back, while making a throat-slashing gesture to Hu Daoke.

Hu Daoke nodded and turned around to grab Cheng Ziang’s neck. Cheng Ziang didn’t back down and instantly shot back with a technique called "Twin Dragons Emerge from the Sea". With a scream, both fell to the ground, thoroughly beaten.
