Chapter 204: Chapter 200: Things in the Past
"Your gun has already been taken back by them and is now being returned to Earth for remanufacturing," Luo’er consoled.
"What’s happening, why has it been taken back, why has it been shipped back to Earth again?" Hu Daoke asked anxiously.
"They’re probably upgrading the equipment," Luo’er shrugged.
"Yours too?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Yes." Luo’er nodded.
After a night’s rest back at their base, Wang Xu arranged for a carriage to take the Advance Team to the manor where they had trained their Orion Squad. Although the base could provide them with rest, Wang Xu felt it was too exposed, so he decided it was best to hide the Advance Team to prevent them from being discovered by enemy spies lurking around their base.
They prepared the horses and waited for the Advance Team to board. Before leaving, Luo’er had an idea and moved forward to hand him a small bag.
"What’s this?" Wang Xu opened the bag to find magic crystals inside.
"These are magic crystal hand grenades I seized from the Zhuyan People during the fight on the airboat," Luo’er explained.
"Magic Crystal Hand Grenades?" Wang Xu was confused by the unfamiliar term.
"These magic crystals are engraved with runes, and they are activated by spells. They can release all the magic power stored within them in an instant, and the crystal shards can cause damage as well," Luo’er explained.
After the explanation, Wang Xu took out a magic crystal hand grenade from the bag and examined it, then asked in surprise, "You seized these from the Zhuyan People?"
"Yes," Luo’er nodded and continued, "I’ve experienced the power of these hand grenade explosions, which produce strong magical fluctuations. These fluctuations are not damaging to Mages, but they are lethal to Earthlings."
"Why didn’t you bring it out earlier?" asked Wang Xu.
"I forgot," Luo’er answered straightforwardly.
"Okay, I’ll bring them to the Magic Research Center," said Wang Xu, patting Luo’er on the shoulder.
"Are we leaving then?" Luo’er swatted away his hand.
"Go on, rest up. I will call you if there are any missions," Wang Xu waved him away.
"Weren’t you supposed to take care of that girl Yaning?" Luo’er asked with a frown.
"This base is full of grown men, no one can look after a little girl here," Wang Xu said awkwardly, "So, I had her sent to the manor where you guys are headed. There are maids there who can take care of her."
Luo’er gave him a blank look, said nothing else, and boarded the carriage. Their carriage this time was not the simple sort, but a luxurious one that was usually only affordable for the nobility.
After Luo’er boarded the carriage, the coachman drove it away from their base. The inside carriage layout was a back and front seat arrangement. Luo’er was squeezed in with two girls, while Hu Daoke and Cheng Ziang were squeezed opposite them.
"Why does this feel weird?" Hu Daoke asked Cheng Ziang who was sitting next to him.
"Of course it’s weird, why would I sit next to you?" Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes and complained.
"As if I want to share a seat with you!" Hu Daoke scrunched his face in distaste.
"Luo’er, tell us about your parents," Tangmo said sweetly, her arm coiled around Luo’er’s. She looked at him expectantly, "You said you’d tell us when you had time, and now we have a long journey ahead."
"A story about my parents?" Luo’er sheepishly scratched his head as he looked at the others.
"Hey, that’s a good idea. Go on, tell us," Hu Daoke clapped his hands in encouragement.
Cheng Ziang gave him a sidelong glance, folded her arms across her chest, and huffed dismissively.
"Pretending to be all aloof, you’re just as curious as the rest of us!" Hu Daoke teased Cheng Ziang.
"Then I will, I’ll tell you." Luo’er said shyly, looking around and noticing Baiyue was also looking at him in anticipation. He steeled himself for a moment, his thoughts drifting back to the war between the two worlds over thirty years ago...
On May 1, 2021, the United Nations mobilized the majority of its member states’ military forces to launch an attack on the Otherworld. Prior to the assault, intelligence indicated that the Otherworld’s army was generally at a medieval level of capability. Therefore, a vanguard composed mainly of NATO forces marched forward. Non-NATO countries were sidelined from the vanguard force and assigned to the support force instead.
Tremendous booms from the artillery support position shattered Luo Chuan’s dream. Bright bursts of firing illuminated the not-too-distant position, and in a moment, smoke and dust filled the air.
"Are these Old Maozi crazy? They’ve been bombarding since early morning without a break," Luo Chuan shook his head, muttering to himself as he crawled out of the trench.
"Luo Chuan, weren’t you supposed to be on guard? How could you be asleep?" An imposing soldier ran over, frowning.
"Squad leader, no one’s coming, and besides, we have him!" Luo’er dismissed it casually, patting the shoulder of the light machine gunner next to him, who was startled when he saw the squad leader and quickly looked away.
"You’re so lazy, you should be assigned to the artillery." The squad leader said helplessly.
"No way, those guys would definitely make me carry shells!" Upon hearing about being assigned to the artillery, Luo Chuan became anxious.
"Stand your guard, if nothing happens we might have to move forward again," the squad leader said, looking at the distant plain and murmuring to himself, "Those NATO guys are insane, advancing so fast, like they’re going for gold, they’re about to lose touch with the support troops behind."
"It seems to be moving so fast, but Otherworld is so big, who knows when the fighting will end." Luo Chuan said, standing next to him.
"There’s a lot of disagreement in the multinational command structure right now. The mainstream view is to seek a decisive battle with the enemy’s main force and force the Otherworld regime to surrender through victory, but with the vanguard advancing unopposed, where do we go to find their main force?" The squad leader shook his head.
"So does that mean we have to fight for a long time?" Luo Chuan asked.
"It seems so, as the vanguard is already about to move beyond the range of our artillery coverage. We should prepare, we may need to relocate soon." The squad leader glanced at his wristwatch.
"The vehicles can’t move, and the artillery can’t be shifted," everyone looked troubled at the mention of changing positions. Luo Chuan spread his hands and said, "Tell those guys at the front to slow down, why the rush?"
"Enough complaining. You’ll need that energy to carry shells later." The squad leader patted his shoulder.
Luo Chuan sighed, preparing to take his position when he spotted a fast horse carrying someone approaching from the distant plain and shouted to the squad leader, "Squad leader, the messenger is back!"
Because wireless communications devices can’t operate in Otherworld, the allied forces have to use the simplest methods to deliver information.
"Probably another bombardment mission, notify the artillery to prepare." the squad leader said, unfazed.
The rider quickly galloped into the artillery position, jumping off his horse in a panic and scrambling up to the leader, screaming in terror, "Leader, the enemy’s main force is approaching!"
"Are you sure?" the leader asked, wide-eyed.
"I saw it with my own eyes." The rider said, terrified.
"Direction?"
"Eleven o’clock!"
"Prepare all units for battle, alert nearby allies to converge, artillery note, preset number one bombardment coordinates!" The leader calmly issued his orders.
The squad leader ran into the trench and shouted, "All guard units, get to your positions, prepare for combat!"
"Just my luck, it had to happen now." Luo Chuan muttered, checking his 03 rifle before taking position in the trench.
"What did you say?" A young soldier next to him asked.
"We’re about to go to war, Lin Wei, don’t wet your pants." Luo Chuan teased.
"Take care of yourself!" The young soldier named Lin Wei retorted angrily.
Luo Chuan lay in the trench, put his rifle to one side, and used his hands like binoculars to look out over the plain. This infinite plain, if attacked from this direction, would undoubtedly be riddled with the powerful firepower of Earth’s military.
Lin Wei also moved next to him. Unlike Luo Chuan’s calm demeanor, Lin Wei seemed very nervous, continuously panting and his hands shaking slightly.
"Scared?" Luo Chuan glanced at him and asked.
"No!" Lin Wei gasped out.
"Don’t worry, they’re just backward Otherworlders," Luo Chuan patted his shoulder in reassurance, "In front of our powerful firepower, they stand no chance."
At that time, Luo Chuan had a confident smile on his face, but the events that followed would shock him. Despite the many strange occurrences since entering Otherworld, such as vehicles breaking down, planes unable to take off, communication devices not working, etc., they still had no idea what Otherworld meant to the Otherworlders.
"They’re coming!" As Lin Wei shouted, a dense mass of figures appeared in the distance. It was a group of knights, clad in armor, weapons in hand, making their appearance from afar.
"Just the scout troops, testing our firepower." Luo Chuan said while covering his ears and telling Lin Wei, "Cover your ears!"
"What?" Before Lin Wei could react, he heard the deafening roar of the cannon behind him, the resulting shockwave made his scalp tingle.
The position where the knights appeared was right at the preset number one position, so the artillery didn’t even need to adjust their aim, they just fired.
With a round of cannonballs crashing down, the knights in the distance had already vanished. Big craters filled the ground, and dust billowed in the air.
Before Luo Chuan could even contemplate this, he heard the squad leader shouting, "Enemy approaching at nine o’clock!"
Indeed, the Otherworld Allied Army wouldn’t be foolish enough to attack from only one direction. But that didn’t matter, they were already dead if they made it to the defensive line.
