Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 177 - 173: Discord
Chapter 177: Chapter 173: Discord
The Prophetic War, also known as the First and Second Otherworld War by the people of Earth. Thirty years ago, various races of Otherworld responded to the prophecy’s call, forming an allied army as the Otherworld Gate opened, intending to eradicate the disaster at its source.
However, during the First Otherworld War, the millions of invading Otherworld Allied Army was disastrously defeated by the U.S. military. Facing the overwhelming aerial dominance of the U.S Seventh Fleet and the U.S. forces in Australia, the Otherworld Allied Army, unable to utilize their magical abilities, was mostly annihilated with only a small portion managing to retreat back to the Otherworld Gate.
Returning to Otherworld, the Otherworld Allied Army was in complete disarray, the leaders of each race were at each other’s throats, the alliance almost fell apart. That is until the then King of Odelanqi mediated the dispute between the leaders, averting the dissolution of the alliance.
Just a year after their failed invasion, the greatest fear of the Otherworld Allied Army came true. From the other side of the gate, troops from many countries led by NATO, under the United Nations banner, stormed into the Otherworld. Although the environment of the Otherworld negated their technological advantages, they were still able to advance hundreds of kilometers in a single day.
The reassembled Otherworld Allied Army began to counterattack, realizing that the Otherworld’s environment negated the terrifying military technological advantages possessed by Earth’s forces. So, they began utilizing their advantage in magic to fight back against the multinational forces.
In the battle on May 5, 2021, both the vanguard and the rear support of the multinational armed forces were attacked by the Otherworld Allied Army. The rear support of the multinational forces were defeated by the Otherworld Allied Army, after less than three hours of battle, they retreated in full force back to the Otherworld Gate.
The surrounded multinational vanguard, despite facing the magic superiority of the Otherworld Allied Army, resisted for five days. Eventually, the ammunition ran out and the multinational troops, having lost more than half, chose to surrender. Henceforth, the Second Otherworld War ended with a complete victory for the Otherworld Allied Army.
The two wars, Earth and Otherworld had victories and defeats, finally under the bold proposal of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the two sides signed a peace treaty. From 2021 to present, Earth and the Otherworld have been living in peace for more than thirty years.
Yila calmly narrated her past, and from her narration, Luo’er learned about Yila’s background. Her village was located at the front line of the war between the multinational forces and the Otherworld Allied Army. The entire village was destroyed in that war, and most of the villagers died in the conflict. At that time, a young Yila was helped by the High-peak people, so she was brought to Helros, where she grew up and eventually married a High-peak man. Sara was the fruit of her and her husband’s love.
Although Luo’er had heard Tangmo mention Yila’s past, he still felt overwhelmed after hearing her story. Yila’s past was eerily similar to his own, he still remembers that his father met his mother, an Elf soldier at the time, on the battlefield of Otherworld.
Seeing the tender bond between mother and daughter, Luo’er couldn’t help but recall the peaceful times him and his family once had. At first, he considered getting rid of the mother and daughter, but in the end, he softened and decided to let them live.
He looked up at the night sky, the early spring night still carried a chill. He softly breathed out white mist, couldn’t help but reminisce about his teammates. He wondered how they are doing now and if they had gotten off the airboat safely.
Going back in time to the day of the airboat’s crash, before the larger explosion occurred, all four members of the Advance Team jumped off the airboat as commanded by Cheng Ziang, activating their parachutes.
They floated in the air, watching as many people jumped off from above. Some opened their parachutes, operating it clumsily, even colliding with people nearby. But as they observed the parachutes opening one after another, they couldn’t spot Luo’er’s parachute.
In the end, they drifted further away. At the sound of a final earth-shattering explosion, the airboat lost support and fell down from the high altitude, trailing a trail of black smoke, and completed its final magnificent explosion on the ground.
However, until the airboat crashed and exploded, they were unable to see Luo’er’s parachute open. When they heard the explosive sound of the airboat crashing to the ground, everyone felt a tightening sensation in their hearts, as if they had lost something.
They were fortunate to have landed in a marsh. As soon as they landed, Baiyue quickly undid her parachute’s backpack, and trudged through the muddy meadow towards the direction of the airboat’s crash. As she saw the thick smoke rise in the distance, Baiyue trembled all over. Suddenly, she knees gave out and she fell to her knees, covering her eyes with both hands and letting out a mournful sob.
"Yue..." When Hu Daoke saw her, he tried to comfort her. However, Cheng Ziang, who had just landed, grabbed his hand.
He turned his head to look at Cheng Ziang, who shook his head and indicated not to disturb Baiyue, meanwhile giving Tangmo a cold look.
Tangmo knew she had made a mistake, her impulsiveness had led to Luo’er’s disappearance. Although she wanted to use the word "missing", she did not see Luo’er’s parachute open until the airboat crashed, and everyone knew what that meant – Luo’er’s chances of survival were slim.
Thinking that Luo’er might have been sacrificed because of her impulsiveness, Tangmo became restless, her hands were shaking slightly, and her mind became blank. She didn’t know what to do. During almost a year of living together, she had got used to Luo’er’s sacrifices, and she could hardly imagine what life without Luo’er would be like.
The thought that she might never see Luo’er again made her mind go blank instantly. She remembered that just a week ago, they were gathered in the mansion, living a leisurely life, but now, everything has changed. This dramatic change is too difficult for Tangmo to accept.
Seeing Tangmo’s state, Cheng Ziang let out a sigh, finally understanding Luo’er’s feelings. Although Tangmo was the captain, she could never execute her duties as a captain. If Luo’er were in such a situation, he would probably have devised a plan for the next step by now, while Tangmo was still in a daze.
"Old Hu, get the map and let’s find out where we are." Cheng Ziang patted Hu Daoke on the shoulder and said.
"Ah!" Hu Daoke nodded and carefully walked behind Baiyue, slowly taking out the map case from her backpack. As he retrieved it, he quietly said, "Yue’er, I’m getting the map, don’t be angry, please!"
After unrolling the map, Cheng Ziang calculated their current position, and marked it on the map. The location they were in now was familiar, and if they traveled east for about twenty kilometers, they would reach the Ebia River. Crossing the river would lead them to the stone road from Galan to Obus. In the last mission, they had taken this route to get to the front line encampment.
"Back to old paths, but things have changed now," Hu Daoke couldn’t help but sigh, and then quickly covered his mouth. He stole a glance at Tangmo, realizing that his remark might upset her.
"Stop talking nonsense. The person is just missing, not dead yet!" Cheng Ziang glared at him sternly and retorted.
"Oh, right right right!" Hu Daoke agreed, repeatedly nodding his head.
After speaking, Hu Daoke sneakily looked at Tangmo. She was still in a daze, and her face changed immediately when she heard their conversation.
"Enough talking, we head east now, towards the Ebia River, aiming to reach the stone road on the other side before it gets dark!" Cheng Ziang rolled up the map and issued his first order as the acting team captain.
"Understood!" Hu Daoke responded properly, and then lowered his voice to Tangmo, "Sister Moumou, we must depart now."
"Oh, oh!" Hearing Hu Daoke’s words, Tangmo quickly snapped out of her daze and nodded in response.
"Yue’er!"
Cheng Ziang called out to Baiyue, who was kneeling on the ground crying. She didn’t respond. After quickly wiping away her tears, she stood up and started walking towards the direction of the airboat crash.
"What are you doing!" Cheng Ziang shouted.
Hearing his words, Baiyue stopped. Without turning back, she coldly answered, "I am going to find him, I am going to find Luo’er!"
"Stop making a fuss, stand still!" Cheng Ziang harshly reprimanded, making Baiyue stop again.
"Who’s making a fuss? We don’t know if Luo’er is alive or dead!" Baiyue turned around to look at him. Her eyes were red and her face was covered in tears. She then glared at Tangmo fiercely.
"According to the pre-planned procedure, we wait for any separated team member at the designated point," Cheng Ziang said calmly.
"What if he can’t come back?" Baiyue asked defiantly.
The plan Cheng Ziang referenced stated that if any team member gets separated, the entire group should reach the nearest designated point and wait for the separated member to return. If the member does not return within a fifteen-day window, he is presumed dead. The team will then report the situation to their superiors and ask whether to continue with the mission.
"If he can’t return, we’ll discuss it then!" Cheng Ziang said dismissively.
"Instead of waiting, I might as well go look for him now!" Baiyue blurted in frustration, showing strong emotions in front of her teammates for the first time.
"If you go looking for him and he comes looking for us, what will you do if you can’t find him," Cheng Ziang tried to reason with her, "Have you forgotten what Luo’er asked us? Just because he is not here now, can you disregard the team’s rules and regulations? What would he think if he saw this!"
In the team, Luo’er always emphasized the importance of rules. Although they often teased him, everyone knew they must strictly adhere to the rules regarding missions and combats.
Baiyue looked at Cheng Ziang reluctantly, then shot a glance at Tangmo who wore a guilty expression. After hesitating for a while, she slowly said, "I’ll wait for Luo’er for fifteen days, if he doesn’t return within that period, I will go look for him myself!"
Cheng Ziang looked at her, not saying anything. Although he didn’t agree with what Baiyue said, he knew he wouldn’t be able to restrain her with his current rank if Luo’er was actually gone. He was utterly confused about whether to force her to stay or let her leave then. The mere thought of this gave him a headache.
