Chapter 1638: Chapter 1631: A Meeting That’s Not a Coincidence
"So, what the saints mean is that the Wen Family cares about us because they’re worried we might undermine the advantage they’ve worked so hard to achieve?" Cheng Ziang asked, looking up.
"I believe that’s the case," Luo’er nodded in response.
"Then, as for the Wu Family, they care about us because we possess the power to disrupt the current stalemate—the demigod in the Nascent Soul Realm. They want to recruit us to strengthen the Wu Family’s forces?" Baiyue couldn’t help but analyze.
"So that means," Tangmo couldn’t resist drawing a conclusion, "as long as we don’t side with Wen or Wu, we won’t get involved with them?"
"I’m afraid it won’t be that simple," Cheng Ziang shrugged.
"The truth is, the Wen Family currently holds the advantage on the surface," Luo’er said, "You should notice that Huayu Ting doesn’t favor the order led by the Wu Family, so even though he nominally positions himself as neutral, he’s willing to work for the Wen Family."
"Huayu Ting wants to protect his wife and children. If the Wu Family reestablishes dominance over the norms of Kyushu’s order, then Fei Yu, his demon clan wife, and their children will undoubtedly face even greater hardship—not to mention the other demons within Kyushu who barely manage to catch a breath of respite," Cheng Ziang said, frowning.
"I agree with the saints’ approach," Hu Daoke said. "Since we uphold universal values, we must be aware that all are born equal. Besides, our purpose here is to resolve the leftover issues of the war between the Human Race and the Demon Clan."
"The Wen Family has issued decrees favorable to the Demon Clan. Though their actions likely aren’t out of genuine concern for demons, they objectively advance equality for demon rights. We should continue promoting such behavior, letting the light of universality shine across Kyushu."
Hu Daoke couldn’t help but raise his hands in a gesture of praising the sun as he finished speaking.
"You..." Cheng Ziang instinctively wanted to argue but was immediately stopped by Baiyue.
She glanced at Cheng Ziang and the others, her expression stern as she said, "I think Old Hu makes a valid point. The Wen Family doesn’t have the intention to advance demon rights, but they have the power to do so. On the other hand, we have the intention but lack the corresponding power. In fact, our Advance Team—or rather, this mission delegation—naturally complements Dongsheng Empire’s Wen Family. If we can establish some form of cooperation, I believe it would significantly benefit the situation of demons in Kyushu."
"So, we should side with the Wen Family?" Cheng Ziang scanned the group and hesitantly asked.
"I think we can," Tangmo nodded in agreement.
"And what do the saints think..." Everyone turned to look at Luo’er.
"I reserve my opinion," Luo’er smiled faintly and gently shook his head.
"Why? Weren’t you the one who suggested we should form a good relationship with the Wen Family?" Tangmo asked, puzzled.
"Building a good relationship and joining them are two different things," Luo’er explained. "Huayu Ting has a decent relationship with the Wen Family, but can anyone truly say Huayu Ting belongs to the Wen Family?"
"That’s a fair point," Cheng Ziang shrugged and fell into contemplation once again.
At that moment, he suddenly experienced an inexplicable surge of anxiety, instinctively turning to look in a direction.
No one told him why he should look that way, but there was a strong intuition urging him to turn his head.
Following the intuition, Cheng Ziang saw a pair of unfamiliar but oddly unsettling large eyes.
It was a small, adorable maidservant. Her appearance wasn’t particularly striking, but her round face was endearing.
Especially her glistening, doe-like eyes, which held a hint of a smile as they stared directly at the pondering Cheng Ziang. When she noticed him turning to look, the maidservant smiled excitedly, her round face radiating charm.
"Do I know her?" Cheng Ziang frowned, once again falling into deep thought.
He was certain he didn’t know that maidservant, yet there was an inexplicable sense of familiarity—a peculiar feeling that couldn’t be grasped or verbalized.
After smiling, the maidservant turned away and left. Seeing her departure, Cheng Ziang instinctively began following her.
No one told him why he needed to follow her, but his subconscious urged him to keep up.
Why did this unsettling feeling seem so familiar?
Clutching his head, Cheng Ziang broke into a jog, trailing the maidservant through the grand inner courtyards of Bicheng Mansion.
The maidservant moved with remarkable grace and agility. Though it appeared to be a simple jog, her pace was astonishingly fast, making it particularly difficult to keep up.
She seemed as though she didn’t exist at all—neither the guards nor the other servants or maids around her noticed her presence. It was as if all they could sense was a faintly fragrant breeze brushing past them.
Given how quickly she moved, Cheng Ziang struggled to keep up, and every so often, the maidservant would deliberately stop to wait for him.
She stood quietly, as though invisible to everyone passing by.
And so, the two fell into a game of chase, weaving through the bustling courtyards and corridors into the quieter depths of the mansion.
Finally, the maidservant halted in a desolate courtyard, blocked by a blue-tiled white wall ahead, with Cheng Ziang cutting off her retreat.
Despite this, the maidservant didn’t seem concerned. She turned around gracefully, folded her hands behind her back, tilted her head mischievously, and smiled at Cheng Ziang with a playful expression.
"Why is the Manor Lord chasing after me?" the maidservant asked sweetly.
Cheng Ziang was sure he’d never heard that voice before. Yet, his certainty seemed fragile, as a mysterious sense told him otherwise—that he’d heard it somewhere.
He took a deep breath, the air filled with a faint, intoxicating fragrance. After stopping, the maidservant unfastened the bell at her waist, and Cheng Ziang immediately heard its crisp chime.
The two stood quietly, gazing at each other. The maidservant’s smile remained radiant, as if seeing Cheng Ziang was the happiest thing in her world.
Taking advantage of the moment, Cheng Ziang’s previously chaotic thoughts began to clear. The initially unsettling sense of familiarity now started to crystallize.
With determination, he strode toward the maidservant, grabbing her slender right wrist and pinning her hand against the wall behind her. Leaning in, he towered over her threateningly and said, "Hun Jiansi, have you had enough fun yet?"
"You... you..." Hearing his words, the maidservant’s shy face instantly went pale. She looked up with wide, frightened eyes, her trembling lips struggling to form words.
"Since we entered Kyushu, you’ve been constantly disrupting us. Do you find this amusing?" Cheng Ziang asked harshly.
"I... I didn’t..." Hun Jiansi tried to defend herself.
"Don’t deny it!"
Cheng Ziang’s sudden roar silenced Hun Jiansi. Her eyes began to glisten, soon filled with tears.
"From Lingyun Government, where you stole my gun, to the forest where you returned it—are you trying to humiliate me?" Cheng Ziang demanded through clenched teeth.
"I wasn’t trying to humiliate you," Hun Jiansi reacted intensely to the accusation, loudly denying it.
"Then what are you trying to do, appearing near us only to vanish again? You’ve played us for fools while laughing in secret. Truly deserving of your reputation as a Heterogeneous Hall master—impressive!"
Cheng Ziang vented the frustrations he’d long bottled up.
"You... you’ve figured it all out, haven’t you?" Hun Jiansi asked, her voice trembling.
Her reaction caught Cheng Ziang off guard. She neither refuted nor admitted it, but instead asked a bitter question.
"Uh..."
Thrown by her demeanor, Cheng Ziang hesitated, then lowered his head and softly replied, "I remember most things now. Around you, I finally stopped being clouded."
"Then why is it you only recall the bad things I’ve done to you? Why can’t you remember the good?"
Hun Jiansi’s voice cracked as she asked, full of grievance. Tears streamed down her face.
"I..." Cheng Ziang was utterly stunned by her response, losing all composure and nervously letting go of her wrist, instinctively taking two steps back.
