Chapter 1556: Chapter 1549: Now You See Me, Now You Don’t

"You!!" Cheng Ziang was startled and couldn’t help but cry out in alarm.

"What’s wrong with you now?" Hu Daoke asked, puzzled.

"You’re just..." Cheng Ziang’s eyes widened, his mind seemingly once again filled with confusion like a thick paste, becoming slow.

Before he could finish speaking, the girl stopped in her tracks, creating distance from him. Cheng Ziang watched her growing distant but did not stop in time, even immediately forgetting her existence.

"Bro, are you really okay?" Hu Daoke asked with concern.

"Did you see that just now?" Cheng Ziang turned to ask.

"See what?" Hu Daoke questioned, confused.

"Saw..." Cheng Ziang hesitated for a moment, the image of the girl dissipating like smoke in his head. He couldn’t help but cover his head, muttering to himself, "Right, what did I see, why did we turn around, why was I shocked?"

"You’re not really cursed, are you? Maybe we should head back," Hu Daoke said, seriously worried now.

"I’m fine," Cheng Ziang waved his hand dismissively, frowning as he said, "I don’t know why, but I have this inexplicable sense of déjà vu, always feeling like I’ve forgotten something but can’t recall what it is."

"When did you start feeling this way?" Hu Daoke asked.

"Just now," Cheng Ziang said, trying hard to remember, unable to help but ponder, "Why did I turn around in the first place, what did I encounter?"

Thinking for a while with his head down, Cheng Ziang seemed to grasp something and said hesitantly, "I think I... encountered someone, who she is, I don’t know; what she looks like, I don’t know; why she approached me, I don’t know..."

"Still the same old three ’I don’t know’s," Hu Daoke holding his mask, noticed two people rushing towards them from down the street. He pointed at them and asked, "Do you mean those two guys?"

Hearing Hu Daoke’s voice, Cheng Ziang looked up to see two middle-aged men coming towards them. These were no ordinary people; the men were dressed fitly, with weapons at their waists, and their expressions stern. From the way they kept their gaze fixed on him, Cheng Ziang could feel that they were after him.

"Something’s off, let’s go," Cheng Ziang said and turned to leave.

"Aren’t we going to fight?" Hu Daoke asked, surprised.

"Fight my ass, this is a street, teeming with people," Cheng Ziang said irritably.

"But I don’t think we can escape," Hu Daoke said worriedly.

"Let’s find some place less crowded first," Cheng Ziang said.

As he turned around and took a few steps, he bumped straight into someone, causing the other party to step back with a "ya" sound.

Cheng Ziang took a closer look; it was a Kyushu girl, petite, a whole head shorter than himself. Her black hair was tied messily, and many strands were out of place. Her complexion wasn’t good, presenting a sallow yellow, likely due to malnutrition.

But what was noteworthy was her eyes, exceptionally bright. When looking at him, her eyes rolled, and her lips always seemed to carry an almost imperceptible smile.

Cheng Ziang noticed a beauty mark at the corner of her mouth, although its color was rather faded. If not for noticing her smile, Cheng Ziang might not have even seen the mole.

After Cheng Ziang bumped into her, causing her to step back, the girl instinctively covered her chest, retreating with a look of surprise on her face, but her lips couldn’t stop curling upwards.

"What is she smiling about?" At that moment, such a thought inexplicably rose in Cheng Ziang’s heart.

"Be careful, it hurt when you bumped into me," the girl said in a young voice, presumably before her voice had changed. Cheng Ziang couldn’t tell if it was just his imagination, but her tone felt teasing and coquettish.

"Sorry, did I hurt you?" Cheng Ziang said, instinctively reaching out a hand.

"I’m fine," the girl refused Cheng Ziang’s goodwill, stepping to the side, and then waved her hand with a smile, "You guys should leave quickly, those two men are coming."

"How do you know..." Cheng Ziang was taken aback and blurted out without finishing his sentence when Hu Daoke interrupted him.

"Hurry up and go, hurry, those two guys really don’t look like good people." Hu Daoke, without further ado, grabbed Cheng Ziang and started walking back.

"Did you see that?" Cheng Ziang asked Hu Daoke.

"See what?" Hu Daoke asked, puzzled.

"I just bumped into someone." Cheng Ziang said.

"Who?" Hu Daoke asked.

"Uh, a woman... a person..." Cheng Ziang tried hard to recall the incident that had just happened, but a strange situation occurred again: it was as if his brain had glued itself shut, completely unable to remember the girl he had encountered just a second ago.

"I know it was a person, but who?" Hu Daoke rolled his eyes and said.

"It was her..." Cheng Ziang pointed to the spot where the girl had just been standing, but his words came to an abrupt halt the next second.

In just a few seconds, the girl had completely disappeared from the spot Cheng Ziang was pointing at. Confronted with this scene, his eyes widened, and he was rooted to the spot in shock.

"Never mind that for now, let’s hurry up and leave." Hu Daoke didn’t care how astounded he was, he quickly grabbed his hand and walked back.

"Who did I bump into? Male or female? Why can’t I remember at all? What in the world is going on?" Cheng Ziang, being dragged away, had nothing but question marks in his mind. For some reason, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t remember the encounter that had happened less than ten seconds ago; he only had a vague memory of bumping into someone.

Hu Daoke, dragging Cheng Ziang, entered an alley, twisting and turning until they finally shook off the two men. The pair breathed a sigh of relief, leaning against the wall and gasping for breath.

"Today is incredibly weird; did you forget to take your meds before leaving the house?" Hu Daoke took a breath, glared at Cheng Ziang, and then asked.

"I... did I bump into a ghost?" Cheng Ziang pondered, unable to help but frown as he asked.

"Big brother, don’t scare yourself, there are no ghosts in this world, only deities," Hu Daoke said impatiently.

"Then who the heck did I bump into just now, and why can’t I remember?" As Cheng Ziang spoke, a cold sweat broke out on his body due to this unknown fear.

"Now that you mention it, I thought I heard you talking to someone just now; I thought you were talking to yourself." Hu Daoke thoughtfully said.

"You noticed it too just now, right!" Hearing Hu Daoke’s words, Cheng Ziang excitedly asked.

"But who exactly were you talking to? I feel like I saw someone, but I can’t seem to remember." Hu Daoke also furrowed his brows.

"Right, you have that feeling too," Cheng Ziang said excitedly.

"Right now, all I can think about are those two men who were following us. As for who you actually encountered, I really can’t remember. Maybe you didn’t meet anyone at all," Hu Daoke said, falling deep into thought.

"Looking at it now, we really did encounter some bizarre stuff today. It’s such bad luck to run into this kind of trouble as soon as we arrived in Kyushu," Cheng Ziang said worriedly.

"Are we dreaming right now?" Hu Daoke suddenly suggested.

"Dreaming?"

"Yeah, think about it," Hu Daoke answered as if it were obvious, "in dreams, we always meet some people, but once we wake up, we immediately forget what these people looked like, even forgetting the events we encountered completely."

"That’s not right," after pondering for a moment, Cheng Ziang countered his point, "according to that, in dreams, we definitely don’t realize we are dreaming. If you think we’re dreaming, it’s as if we’re already awake, but why would we be sleeping in a place like this? It doesn’t make sense."

"Could it be that someone drugged us and dumped us here?" Hu Daoke asked.

"That shouldn’t be the case, right? If so, who would do that, what are their motives, and why would they let us go?" Cheng Ziang said with a frown.

Although he was arguing the point, he seemed very uneasy. The thought of that possibility instinctively filled him with panic, and so he reached into his pocket. Immediately, he felt a wave of weakness, and cold sweat began to bead out.
