Chapter 152: Chapter 148: Molecular Reorganization Transmission_1
Luo’er was momentarily stunned, then looked in the direction Hu Daoke had pointed out. He realized that the Hunter Squad’s carriage had come to a halt at some point, and following that, Murong—who was the captain of the squad—stepped off the carriage and strode directly towards them.
"What’s he up to?" Hu Daoke couldn’t help murmuring in Luo’er’s ear when he saw Murong approaching them.
Luo’er was silent, merely watching as he approached. When he arrived, Luo’er saw him come to a halt before them and looked at Hu Daoke, then at Luo’er, before finally speaking with a smile, "May I take a ride on the horse?"
"You..." Hu Daoke was on the verge of a retort when Luo’er stealthily nudged him. He looked back to see Luo’er wave a hand, signaling him step aside.
Hu Daoke, always willing to follow Luo’er’s guidance, glanced at him, then at Murong again before passing the reins of the horse behind him to Murong.
"Thank you!" Murong expressed his gratitude chuckling, while Hu Daoke gave a noncommittal gesture. After handing over the horse, he guided his own horse to go over to Cheng Ziang, leaving the other two with some privacy for their conversation.
Murong managed to mount the horse, though he was still unaccustomed to this common mode of transport in the Otherworld. After swinging into the saddle, he glanced at Luo’er before speaking, "Would you mind if we had a short talk? We may have been a bit too offensive to you in the past, and for that, I apologize."
"It’s alright," Luo’er waved his hand dismissively, his face devoid of expression, "but since you brought it up, let me tell you this: If Zhuanzhu keeps up with his offensive behavior in the coming days, I will not let him off the hook, regardless of whose team he’s on."
"I sincerely apologize for Zhuanzhu’s actions," Murong said quite earnestly. Someone astute, he understood what Luo’er was pointing towards.
Luo’er gave him a cold stare, eventually admonishing, "I warned you before to control the people under your command, especially Zhuanzhu. But it seems you didn’t take it to heart."
"Zhuanzhu is somewhat... cynical, I suppose. But fundamentally, he..."
"Fundamentally, he isn’t exactly a good person," Luo’er pronounced coldly, "I can’t believe you haven’t noticed. If you can’t control him, he’ll eventually lead your team into serious trouble!"
"I understand," said Murong, nodding in agreement and humbly accepting Luo’er’s criticism before he added, "I will handle Zhuanzhu’s issues regarding the Advance Team."
"My role in the Advance Team wasn’t decided by me and I didn’t simply pull strings to get it," Luo’er conveyed his point to Murong and continued seriously, "It was headquarters’ decision. I’m only a student; I shouldn’t have any say."
Luo’er spoke confidently because he hadn’t earned his placement on the Advance Team through hereditary privileges. His grandfather, Luo Qishan, had always been against his involvement in the Otherworld. And though Luo’er acknowledged that his grandfather’s influence played a role in his selection, he did not consider it nepotism.
"So, I would like to apologize to you, on behalf of our Hunter Squad." Murong bowed his head with a look of shame, "It seems I measured a gentleman’s heart with a petty mind, suspecting that you pulled strings, which angered us. We have over a month of training left, and I wouldn’t want tension to persist between our squads."
Luo’er quietly watched Murong in front of him, unexpectedly finding him quite gutsy—to compromise for the sake of the big picture. Their first encounter had been during a competition, after which they had barely interacted. Luo’er’s impression of him remained that of a dangerous, thoughtful individual, completely forgetting that they were essentially comrades.
Murong’s reminder suddenly made Luo’er aware that they were no longer enemies. There was no longer the need to be on guard especially in the peril-ridden realm of the Otherworld.
"Speaking of which, it seems we’re not friends yet." Murong reached out his hand as he said this.
After hesitating, Luo’er still reached out to shake his hand. Murong was right; at this point, they were no longer enemies. Even though he disliked Zhuanzhu, they were all teammates now.
Though torn, Luo’er accepted Murong’s goodwill, bearing in mind that they were now comrades.
"I heard your time in the Otherworld hasn’t been going so well these past few months." Murong’s tone became more casual and friendly after becoming friends with Luo’er.
Luo’er heaved a deep sigh, and said, "We keep stirring up one hornet’s nest after another. If it were not for some matters, I would rather stay on Earth."
"What matters?" asked Murong reflexively.
Luo’er glanced at him, opting not to disclose his objectives. He shook his head and said, "Just some personal matters."
It was evident that Luo’er was hiding something, but Murong chose not to make an issue of it. He laughed it off and did not ask further.
"How about you guys? How’s life at the academy?" Luo’er asked proactively seeing that Murong had gone silent.
"It’s alright. We enrolled in Sheng Hua Academy for undergraduate course work, though it doesn’t really feel like a university. The head of headquarters said they have an important mission for us and hence we need to undergo two years of training," said Murong.
"Important mission?" Luo’er queried as he regarded Murong.
"Apparently, it will play a role related to the Otherworld on Earth," Murong pondered and spoke.
"Working on a mission related to the Otherworld, on Earth?" Luo’er seemed confused.
"I’m not sure of the specifics, but it’s said that since the Otherworld Gate opened, a lot of bizarre events have occurred on Earth, all of which are more or less related to the Otherworld," said Murong.
"These inexplicable events are..." halfway through his question, Luo’er decided to close his mouth. He wasn’t certain whether Murong would divulge any of this to him.
Murong glanced at the carriage up ahead, and then around him, and then whispered mysteriously, "I heard that magic power has started to appear on Earth."
"Magic power appearing on Earth!" Luo’er was startled into silence.
"You should know what form the Earth will take when it begins to manifest magic power." Murong shook his head and continued, "So that is the purpose of our journey to the Otherworld, specifically to learn and sense the disturbance of magical energy."
You must know that the reason Earth and the Otherworld have maintained their equilibrium, or to say that Earth has a small upper hand, is largely because there was no magic on Earth. The magic of the Otherworld can’t be used on Earth. If Earth is filled with magic, not to mention whether Earthlings could adapt to the Magic Power Erosion. The advantage that Earth has built over the Otherworld for decades will collapse instantly. If the Otherworld army struck again, it could not be guaranteed that they could completely conquer the Earthlings. But a draw or even a slight loss against the United Nations forces would be no problem.
Seeing the astonished look on Luo’er’s face, Murong dropped another bomb, "According to the findings of a secret investigation run by the United Nations, the Earth and Otherworld had been in contact with each other thousands of years ago. Many Earthlings have been summoned to the Otherworld, and quite a few from the Otherworld have been teleported to Earth. Supposedly, Western Christianity has numerous connections to the Church of Light in the Otherworld."
"That sounds too absurd. It must be some fabrication in a cheap fantasy novel," Luo’er expressed doubtfully.
"Believe it or not, but the UN certainly takes it seriously," Murong shrugged.
"Aren’t the Otherworlders worried about dying of exhaustion without magic if they’re teleported to Earth?" Luo’er couldn’t help but ask.
It’s known that during the first Otherworld War, many captured soldiers from the Otherworld died on Earth for precisely this reason.
"I’m not quite sure," Murong thought for a moment, "but I hear the Otherworlders’ method of teleportation, when explained scientifically, is molecular restructuring transport."
"Molecular restructuring transport?"
"It means disassembling the body into a molecular state, then teleporting to Earth, and reassembling." Murong scratched his head, "According to those scientists, these molecules adjust based on the environment of the destination during the reassembly process. In layman’s terms, Otherworlders adjust to adapt to Earth’s environment when teleporting, and Earthlings do the same when summoned to the Otherworld."
"So, you’re saying that Otherworlders become Earthlings when they are teleported to Earth, while Earthlings turn into Otherworlders when they are teleported to the Otherworld?" Luo’er listened attentively but was bewildered.
"Well, it sounds a bit far-fetched, but," Murong continued, then glanced around and whispered into Luo’er’s ear, "it’s rumored that some nations on Earth have already started using this teleportation technology."
"Not ours?" Luo’er asked, looking at him.
"Uh-huh," Murong nodded seriously.
Seeing his earnest expression, Luo’er fell into deep thought. The countries in the world that would know about this kind of technology could be counted on one hand. If their headquarters had this kind of technology at their disposal, there’s no way they would’ve started the Origin Project.
"I just wanted to give you a heads-up. Be careful of those guys in the Otherworld who could very well be from Earth." Murong said with a smirk.
"Thank you for the warning," Luo’er expressed his heartfelt gratitude.
Murong just waved his hand, neither confirming nor denying anything.
Luo’er had always believed that they had an ongoing lead in the Otherworld, especially after dispatching the Advance Team, which should have given them more sway over the Otherworld than other nations. However, it turns out Earth nations have mastered such incredible, secret technology.
Clearly, the competition between Earth’s nations has not ceased, even before the outbreak of the third Otherworld War. As for who ends up coming out on top, it’s still anyone’s guess. In order to gain an advantage, one can’t simply be satisfied with current achievements, but should look further into the future.
When Murong and his team first arrived, everyone in the Advance Team was more or less dismissive of these newcomers, being lost in their own achievements. Surprisingly, Murong taught them a lesson that opened their eyes.
With that in mind, Luo’er couldn’t stop himself from casting a guilty glance at him. Noticing Luo’er’s gaze, Murong turned back to look at him with a grin, scaring him into quickly looking away.
