Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 151 - 147: Heading to the Training Base
Chapter 151: Chapter 147: Heading to the Training Base
On the third day, their carriage was finally ready. However, the carriage was primary prepared for the Hunting Squad, as the members of the Advance Team couldn’t stand the rickety cart and chose to ride their own horses.
Although, there were exceptions. The two girls of the Advance Team, out of consideration for Yaning, chose to ride in the carriage. Their horses were led by Hu Daoke.
Taking into account the delicate relationship between the Advance Team and the Hunting Squad, Wang Xu didn’t dare to force them all in the same carriage– he had prepared two carriages instead.
Regarding Yaning, Wang Xu had a resident doctor check on her. It was initially judged that her brain damage was due to the shock wave caused by the explosion. Her intelligence may be permanently stuck at this current stage, which made Luo’er feel guilty.
Actually, Wang Xu has his own plans for Yaning, so he didn’t mind keeping her at the headquarters. Although they are under the highest General Staff Headquarters, in the Otherworld, they still have considerable autonomy.
As Luo’er and his team were going to train in the deep mountains, they naturally wouldn’t leave Yaning alone at the station. Even if the people from the Advance Team thought of doing so, the men at the station wouldn’t be able to take care of this little girl.
Outside the manor, the three burly men of the Advance Team looked down at Wang Xu while mounted on horses, while the girls were riding in the carriage. Shangguan Jiu seemed to like Yaning a lot and, despite feeling embarrassed, squeezed into the girls’ carriage. The four girls’ chatter and laughter in the carriage caused the four men standing next to it to be quite gloomy.
"I am not going with you. After all, I have to stay and manage the station. I’ll leave Li Si, my assistant, to handle your affairs." Wang Xu said, waving his hand to summon a young man in his early twenties.
Li Si was of mixed race from Earth, his mother was Russian. He inherited his mother’s deep eye sockets and high nose bridge, making him look no different from people in the Otherworld. Before coming to the Otherworld, Li Si dyed his dark hair flaxen, making it almost impossible to recognize his Yellow Race characteristics.
"Hello everyone, my name is Li Si!" Li Si stepped forward and introduced himself with a slight bow. He had a calm demeanor not common among people his age, but his youthful vitality was still visible on his face.
Li Si was Wang Xu’s assistant. As a top student from a prestigious school, Li Si greatly admired his supervisor and saw him as his idol. When he learned that Wang Xu was assigned to reside permanently in the Otherworld, he constantly wrote letters to the headquarters expressing his wishes to reside in the Otherworld.
As per the policy, the headquarters did not allow young Earth military officers to perform missions in the Otherworld. After all, Magic Power Erosion is a major problem that they cannot avoid. The higher-ups did not want their subordinates to die young because of irreversible Magic Power Erosion.
Even though recently, the Magic Research Center has developed drugs that can control Magic Power Erosion to a limited extent, it can only make the damage from Magic Power Erosion reversible. As Earth-men, they still cannot resist staying in the Otherworld for a long time.
But Li Si was very determined. He applied to the headquarters no less than a hundred times and finally got approval from the Chief of the General Staff, Lin Wei, to be sent to the Otherworld as Wang Xu’s assistant.
Luo’er and the others also gave a slight bow in response. But seeing his overflowing confidence, Luo’er couldn’t help but asked, "Can you withstand the Magic Power Erosion?"
They needed to know that the deep mountain manor they were going to had much stronger magic power than the area near the Otherworld Gate. They weren’t sure if he, as an Earth-man, could withstand it.
"Don’t worry, I can take medicine!" Li Si replied confidently.
Seeing his bullheaded courage, Luo’er couldn’t help but throw a skeptical look at Wang Xu. Wang Xu chuckled and reassured, "Don’t worry, the drugs developed by the research center can ensure that he won’t be harmed by Magic Power Erosion for a long time. You can rest assured on this."
"When did the research center become so powerful? They even managed to develop such an amazing drug." Hu Daoke couldn’t help but mutter in a quiet tone to Cheng Ziang.
"The research center has always been powerful. Don’t forget, all of our weapons and equipment have to go through them." Cheng Ziang replied emotionlessly.
"Didn’t see how powerful it was, anyway, when we meet many enemies, we still have to run." Hu Daoke retorted with a pouted mouth.
Cheng Ziang stared at him, sneered coldly, and retorted, "If you want to be invincible, why don’t you pilot a Gundam!"
"Hmph, a Gundam is not as reliable as a tank. By the way, it seems that we haven’t learned how to drive a tank." Hu Daoke commented.
"Tanks will fail in the Otherworld, you idiot." Cheng Ziang wittily replied.
The physical rules in the Otherworld seems to differ from Earth; internal combustion engines could not start here no matter what, causing a large number of coalition tanks to stall during the Second Otherworld War, and subsequently smashed to pieces by the Otherworld cavalry.
If steam engines can operate in the Otherworld, then the Otherworld may step into the Steam Punk Era of multi-riveted gun turrets.
"You two stop fooling around, be mindful of your impact." Noticing their antics, Luo’er turned and admonished them.
After some pleasantries, Wang Xu bid farewell to the members of the Advance and Hunting Squads. Li Si was not shy at all, and joined the Hunting Squad’s four men in their carriage. The already gloomy Hunting Squad got even more upset at the arrival of this stranger.
The two carriages were at the front, and the three men of the Advance Team, armed and in their unique outfits, followed behind. The suits were embossed with defense runes. Although the defense effect was still unknown, it was better than not having anything.
Hu Daoke had a horse behind him, it was specifically for carrying the team’s supplies. As the team’s supply officer, Hu Daoke was somewhat reluctant to part with it, so he brought it along as well. There were no supplies on the horse’s back, just a set of saddles for him to switch for riding.
With three of them walking behind, they inevitably started to feel bored. As a result, Hu Daoke started the conversation, "Hey boss, what did you do to Yue’er last night? Why did she cry like that?"
In front of Hu Daoke and Luo’er, Cheng Ziang no longer displayed his normally cold and distant facade. After Hu Daoke spilled the beans, Cheng Ziang also couldn’t help but turn towards Luo’er, clearly wanting to gossip as well.
"Both of you, don’t let your imaginations run wild," Luo’er glanced at the two and said with a bitter laugh, "I didn’t do anything to her; she cried on her own."
"I thought you’d done something to wrong Sister Moumou." Hu Daoke voiced his suspicion.
"What on Earth are you guys thinking?" Luo’er asked with a bitter smile.
"What’s wrong with Yue’er?" Hu Daoke glanced at the carriage in the front row and whispered his question to Luo’er.
"Well," Luo’er replied, glancing at the carriage and sighing. "Never mind, this topic might be a sensitive one for you guys. I don’t want to sadden you by discussing it."
"Why wouldn’t you tell us? Why should we be sad?" Hu Daoke blinked, his face full of curiosity.
Luo’er glanced at him, shook his head and said, "Yue’er has discovered the whereabouts of her parents."
"Yue’er’s...parents..." Hu Daoke looked at Luo’er, then at the carriage, at a loss for words.
True to Luo’er’s words, this was indeed a sensitive topic. Keep in mind that most of the members of the Haiya Academy are, in essence, orphans. The sudden revelation that Baiyue has found her parents could potentially stir up feelings of discomfort amongst the rest.
"It’s okay," Hu Daoke adopted a curious expression after a moment of silence. He said, "We, as comrades, are naturally happy for Yue’er’s reunion with her parents. Bear in mind, her parents might as well be our parents."
"You are..." Luo’er was partly amused and partly teary-eyed. He found himself unexpectedly moved by Hu Daoke’s words.
"So, is she crying out of sheer joy?" Hu Daoke continued with his questions.
Luo’er sighed, shook his head, and said, "Her mother has passed away. She died even before Yue’er was born. Additionally, her father had been captured countless years before, his whereabouts currently unknown."
"Wait a minute, what’s happening? This is a bit confusing," Hu Daoke furrowed his brows and asked, "Her mother died before Yue’er was born? How’s that possible?"
Luo’er explained, "Her biological mother was in dire health when she was sent to Haiya Academy. The academy personnel discovered that she was pregnant, so they decided to protect the child. They extracted the then-still-an-egg Yue’er, carried out test tube cultivation as well as genetic modification, and then found a surrogate mother to carry her."
"Oh, so Yue’er has two mothers," Hu Daoke said, suddenly understanding.
"Yes." Luo’er nodded. Although Hu Daoke seemed goofy, he proved remarkably quick-witted.
"And what about her father?" Hu Daoke asked next.
"Her father is Russian. Because he had sent her mother to Haiya Academy without authorization, he was arrested and detained by the Federal Security Service," Luo’er answered briefly.
"He’s been detained until now?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Yes!" Luo’er nodded.
"Then Yue’er, she..." Hu Daoke glanced at the carriage and stuttered, he seemed to want to say more, but eventually just sighed.
"Remember not to mention this in front of her," Luo’er advised as an afterthought.
"Hmph." Cheng Ziang sniffed, gave a satisfied nod, and rode away.
"By the way, Chief, how did you know all this?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Yue’er and I met when we were kids. I started to investigate after hearing the village head of Meila Village mention that Yue’er looked like his daughter," Luo’er explained.
"Holy cow, childhood friends!" Hu Daoke exclaimed.
"Not childhood friends, just acquaintances from when we were little. Otherwise, how could I not recognize her when we formed the team," Luo’er shrugged.
"By the way, Chief, do you mind sharing the story of your parents?" Hu Daoke asked.
"My parents," Luo’er paused, and then sighed, "Let’s save that for another time. I’ll share that story when we have some free time."
Luo’er thought it would be necessary for his team to know about his parents’ incident at some point. After all, their help would be necessary in his quest to find his mother.
Just as Luo’er was deep in his thoughts, he was nudged by Hu Daoke. He turned to look at Hu Daoke, who pointed towards something in the distance, then signaled with his eyes, "Boss, look!"
