Chapter 1248: Chapter 1241: The Command of an Army
"Why are you so intent on getting rid of your own general?" Feng asked, puzzled.
"I’ll talk about it when I meet your patriarch," the man replied.
Feng stopped talking; she disliked the way the man spoke. In the Advance Team, Luo’er always referred to his team members as partners and never considered them as his servants.
Feng didn’t mind the word "master," but if she felt that Luo’er would dislike it, she would resist the word as well.
"Let’s go," the man said, walking to the corpse in front of him, drawing his dagger, and examining it briefly before holding it in his hand. He pointed in a direction with his other hand and said, "Walk that way. There are very few patrol guards in that area, and it is easy to leave the camp."
Feng kept her knife pointed straight at him and did not move it away. Seeing her aggressive gesture, the man smiled slightly and then shrugged, "No need to be so tense. I said, I am just a Civil Captain, powerless, unable to overpower any of you cultivators. I have shown my utmost sincerity and I hope you can let go of your vigilance and trust me this time."
"Give me the knife!" Feng stretched out her hand and said expressionlessly.
"Here." The man didn’t resist at all; instead, he shrugged his shoulders and handed her the blood-stained dagger.
After taking the dagger from him, Feng held the knife in one hand and the sword in the other, and with a move of her head, she said, "Lead me out!"
"Very well, this way please." The man made a polite gesture of invitation.
Feng followed behind him, watching as he strolled casually in front, giving the impression not that he was being held hostage, but merely taking a leisurely walk.
However, just as he had said, the route he chose was nearly deserted and was also a blind spot in the lighting, illuminated only by the moonlight.
After leaving the camp, the two walked about five hundred meters, one behind the other, straight to the area where Cheng Ziang and the others were ambushed. Only then did Feng allow him to stop, and she started to call Cheng Ziang.
Shortly after, Cheng Ziang emerged from the shadows, coming to Feng’s side and asked with concern, "What’s the situation? Why did you capture someone?"
"He killed that general!" Feng pointed with her knife at the man’s back and answered briefly.
"Oh, are you her patriarch?" The man, hearing their conversation, turned his head to ask.
"Don’t turn around!" Feng shouted sharply, and the man shrugged his shoulders and turned his head again.
"Who are you?" Hearing the man speaking the language of the Demon Clan, Cheng Ziang was very curious and took the initiative to ask.
"If I say I was the former chief commander, would you believe me?" the man asked, not turning his head.
"That depends on your sincerity. Now that you are in our hands, lying won’t do you any good," Cheng Ziang said coldly.
"Yes, so I’m not lying," the man said.
"Since you are the commander, why did you kill the general?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Killed? No, no, no, you seem to be mistaken. It was that girl who killed him; I only helped her a bit," the man said leisurely.
"You don’t like generals?" After a brief pause, Cheng Ziang cautiously asked.
"Specifically, I don’t like cultivators," the man replied.
"So, you helped the girl kill the general, what exactly do you want to do?" Cheng Ziang continued to ask.
"No other reason, just thought that if you want to kill more generals, maybe we can consider collaborating, working together from within and without. What do you think?" the man asked.
"You are a commander of an army," Cheng Ziang said.
"Hmm?" the man shrugged his shoulders.
"However, you intend to slaughter your own generals. Isn’t that like destroying your own city walls?" Cheng Ziang continued to ask.
"You are mistaken. The city walls are the soldiers, the Kunzhou, and the government workforce, but they are definitely not the generals. These people, this kind of people, no matter how many die, I won’t feel any heartache, I won’t even blink an eye," the man said slowly, and both of them almost simultaneously felt his tone turning increasingly colder.
"But killing the generals, wouldn’t that affect the military’s combat strength? Since you want to conquer West Outer Heaven, shouldn’t you make proper use of these forces?" Cheng Ziang asked, puzzled.
"Who told you that it’s the Demon Clan we are conquering West Outer Heaven from?" The man even sneered upon hearing Cheng Ziang’s question.
"Isn’t it?" Cheng Ziang asked calmly.
"Of course not," the man said with a smile, shaking his head. After pausing, he looked up at the night sky and spoke slowly, "Do you know, for this expedition, the Empire mobilized a thousand generals with the intent to grind them to death here. As a member of West Outer Heaven... or should I say a friend. If you want to save West Outer Heaven, then as long as you can kill more than forty percent of the generals, the Empire will retreat!"
"Your Dongsheng Empire actually wants to kill its own generals, what exactly are you trying to do?" Cheng Ziang could hardly believe his own ears.
"This is an internal affair of ours, it is irrelevant to you. It’s also because I saw that you have the capability to kill generals, that’s why I am telling you this. So now, do we have a basis for cooperation?" the man asked nonchalantly.
Upon hearing his words, Cheng Ziang was silent for a moment, then slowly began to speak, "Alright, turn around."
At the same time, he pressed down Feng’s long sword, eliminating their hostility.
When he first met this man, Cheng Ziang thought he carried a comfortable scholarly air, but his seemingly smiling expression always made him uneasy about this man.
The man had a genteel and elegant appeal, about thirty years old, and if he were not dressed in a military uniform, he would resemble a suave privileged gentleman. It was hard to imagine that a young army commander could present such a demeanor.
"So you are her master, what should I call you?" the man asked proactively.
"My name is Leon, and first off, I am not her master, we are companions," Cheng Ziang once again used his alias, while emphasizing his relationship with Feng, clearly he disliked the term ’master.’
"Then, may I speak with your master?" the man asked.
"In Lingyuan City, you mean?" Cheng Ziang asked sarcastically.
Hearing his words, the man did not speak, but simply laughed. Seeing him laugh, Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but laugh as well, although his laugh seemed somewhat cold.
Though he had not met the real master, the man had surprisingly learned the rough whereabouts of Cheng Ziang and his group, which was not far from the towering Lingyuan City.
"So, about you, as courtesy demands reciprocity, it’s your turn to reveal your identity, isn’t it?" Cheng Ziang asked, dispelling his smile.
"Call me Xuan," the man responded, "I am sorry, but that is all I can tell you. I am the general of the Advance Team, overseeing all military affairs of the Advance Team," the man answered.
"So, if I kill you now, the entire Advance Team will be headless?" Cheng Ziang asked with narrowed eyes and a cold smile.
"Hahaha," faced with his death threat, Xuan did not seem to be scared at all but just chuckled and shook his head, "Why would you think that the entire Advance Team would collapse just because of my death, what do you take the other commanders for?"
"Why are you targeting these generals?" Cheng Ziang asked again.
"I have already said, this is our internal affair, I must beg your pardon for not disclosing it. I have already seen that you have the capability to kill generals, I just want to know if you have the willingness to kill generals. If so, we can discuss this further. If not, we can part ways now, and when we meet tomorrow, we will still be enemies," Xuan insisted on keeping them in the dark.
"A thousand generals, just over four hundred deaths, and the Dongsheng Empire will retreat?" Cheng Ziang paused, then continued to ask.
"Yes, as long as you achieve this target, we will immediately withdraw our troops and head back to Kyushu, retreating from West Outer Heaven," Xuan nodded and said.
"You’re just the general of the Advance Team, can what you say represent a hundred thousand troops?" Cheng Ziang was somewhat skeptical of Xuan’s words.
"If I didn’t have support, do you think I would dare to make such a guarantee? Just like you, you are also just a pawn; do you think your thoughts could represent your master’s?" Xuan stared at Cheng Ziang as he spoke.
