Chapter 1230: Chapter 123: The Fox-Eared Youth
Soon, members of the Advance Team who heard the news came flocking over, surrounding the person who had fallen to the ground. Everyone looked around at each other before all eyes turned to Luo’er.
"Be on guard!" Luo’er signaled with his hands and then walked over to the person.
Cheng Ziang planted his knife in the ground and squatted down to examine the person. Seeing Luo’er’s arrival, he pointed at the person excitedly and said, "Luo’er, this person can speak the Demon Clan language."
The Demon Clan language is also known as Sub-beastmen language, a term proposed by Zhuyan Yu, who believes that the East Continent hosts the Human Race and a distinct Demon Clan. The differences between Feng and the Sub-beast Race are quite pronounced.
"What did he say?" Luo’er asked.
"The Eastern soldiers are invading; that’s the gist of it, I think. Because of the accent, I couldn’t understand clearly," Cheng Ziang replied with a shrug.
"Hmm," Luo’er pondered for a moment, then made a gesture with his fingers, "Help him up, and we’ll talk once he’s awake."
"Got it!" Cheng Ziang nodded and as he started to move, he called out to Hu Daoke, "Come and help."
"I’m on guard," Hu Daoke protested from behind a tree trunk.
"Guard your head, everyone’s already here, we don’t need your guard. Get over here and help!" Cheng Ziang said bluntly.
"You weren’t saying that a moment ago," Hu Daoke grumbled as he rose reluctantly and walked over.
The two of them lifted the person together; he was relatively thin, so he wasn’t very heavy. When they lifted him, Cheng Ziang noticed an empty scabbard belted around his waist and a dagger inserted beside it. Moreover, there was a leather armor on his chest, which led Cheng Ziang to speculate that this person must be a soldier or scout.
"Luo’er, this person’s identity is not ordinary; it’s best to tie him up." Cheng Ziang suggested to Luo’er, then turned to search the jungle for the man’s lost weapon.
"Boss, should we tie him up?" Hu Daoke asked, taking out a restraint strap.
"No need," Luo’er thought for a moment and shook his head, "With so many of us here, can’t we keep an eye on him? First impressions are important. How are we going to communicate if we bind him?"
Luo’er always believed that communication is predicated on relative equality. If they were to tie the person up now, it would become an interrogation by the Advance Team, which would negate any sense of equality.
Hu Daoke brought him to a clearing and laid him flat on the ground, then Luo’er called over Tangmo to diagnose him. Tangmo squatted down and conducted a brief examination before turning back to say, "His body doesn’t have any obvious external injuries, but he shows symptoms of dehydration. He probably fainted from lack of water."
"Then give him some water to see if we can wake him up," Luo’er said.
"Right," Tangmo nodded and then took out a water bottle, carefully giving the man a drink.
Baiyue watched the person intently, feeling more and more that something was off. She moved closer, squatted down beside him, and suddenly removed his head covering. In the instant the hood was taken off, everyone was stunned.
He was a male youth, around twenty years old, with a somewhat childish face. His features were ordinary, with short, dark brown hair, but what caught everyone’s attention the most were the fluffy, large ears on his head.
His ear fur was also dark brown, yet it had some white spots, and the ears were triangular in shape, about eight centimeters in length. The inside of his ear flaps was filled with tufts of white fluff.
"This is..." Upon seeing this person’s distinguishing features, Zhuyan Yu couldn’t help but inhale sharply and squat down, finding himself at a loss for words.
Although they always believed that the East Continent had both the Demon Clan and the Human Race, this was their first encounter with ear characteristics other than the rabbit ears. They were as surprised as if they were seeing a dragon for the first time like the famous Mr. Ye.
"These are fox ears," Tangmo asserted after a brief check.
Then, she lifted Baiyue’s hood to make a quick comparison and continued, "This type of ear is completely different from Yue’er’s. One has fox ears, the other rabbit ears. This means the East Continent indeed has a non-human race category, which is expressed through the ears."
"The Fox-Ear Tribe?" Luo’er mused.
"Xiao Ang just said he can speak the language of the Sub-beast Race, which means that the language of the Sub-beast Race is indeed the common language of this Non-human Race, also known as the language of the Demon Clan," Zhuyan Yu also fell into deep thought.
"What exactly does he mean by ’the invasion from the east’?" Hu Daoke curiously asked while holding his machine gun.
"Literally speaking, it should mean there are enemies invading from the east. Or say, it is the enemies coming from the east who are invading," Luo’er analyzed.
"Anyway, let’s wait for him to wake up before we make any decisions," Tangmo said.
After a while, Cheng Ziang, who went into the jungle to search, came back as well, holding a long and slender knife, which presumably was the weapon the man had lost.
"Found it in the woods; it should be this man’s sidearm," Cheng Ziang handed the knife to Luo’er and pointed to the man’s empty scabbard.
Luo’er took a close look at the knife. The knife was long and slender overall, with a blade about three to four centimeters wide and roughly eighty centimeters long. The back of the knife was not thick, making it unsuitable for blocking.
This knife had a certain curvature, but it was mostly straight. The tip tapered to a sharp point, and although it was a knife, Cheng Ziang felt it was more suited for thrusting rather than slashing, somewhat similar to a sword.
"Is this a weapon from the East Continent?" Luo’er examined the knife and nodded in approval.
"Boss, can we confiscate this as a war trophy?" Hu Daoke took off the man’s scabbard and handed it to Luo’er, eagerly asking.
"What do you mean ’confiscate’? He’s not our enemy, how can we just take his belongings?" Luo’er shook his head.
"Ah, Boss, you’re too kind. You’ll suffer for this later," Hu Daoke said.
"Give it a rest," Cheng Ziang kicked him and rolled his eyes, "Luo’er is being righteous, don’t try to pass on your twisted values to him. If you lead him astray, you won’t be able to bear the consequences."
"I’m not a child. What do you mean ’lead astray’?" Luo’er said with a wry smile.
In truth, Luo’er had long passed the age of thirty, but his stunning features had not changed much, still resembling a middle school student.
Being of mixed Elf Race heritage, the others had more or less gained a stable demeanor, with Luo’er being the sole exception, always giving off the impression of unreliability due to his youthful vigor.
After about an hour or so, the Fox-Ear Tribe Person finally woke up slowly. As soon as he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Luo’er’s black hair, which scared him so much that he shivered all over, hurriedly searching for his sidearm at his waist.
"Are you looking for this?" Luo’er shook the sidearm in his hand and asked in the Demon Clan’s language.
Hearing Luo’er speak in the Demon Clan’s language, the man was extremely surprised, and even more so seeing his sidearm in Luo’er’s hands, which brought him to a panic. Looking around and realizing he was surrounded, he kneed on the ground, bowed his head, and said with a trembling voice, "I, I don’t know anything, please don’t hurt me."
"Calm down. We’re not your enemies. We are travelers from foreign lands, this is our first time here," Luo’er explained.
"Travelers from foreign lands," upon hearing this term, the man looked up in astonishment and asked Luo’er with wide eyes, "You’re not from the east?"
"Of course not, we come from the west," Luo’er pointed westward as he spoke.
"Then how do you speak our language?" the man asked in shock.
"We were taught," came the voice of Taran, who had been silent until then. He stepped forward, removed his hood, and revealed his rabbit ears.
"You, you’re also a member of Abisien?" Seeing Taran’s rabbit ears, the man was even more surprised, and his fluffy fox ears involuntarily began to tremble.
"What is Abisien?" Taran was confused by the new term, and it seemed that even he, a Sub-beastman, had never heard of it.
"You don’t know about Abisien, wait, you are, you belong to that extinct..." The man stared at Taran’s rabbit ears, and as if realizing something suddenly, he pointed at the ears with a quivering voice.
