Chapter 1086: Chapter 1079: Deep Water Weapon
Sailing on a small boat to the Venture’s deck and gazing out at the boundless sea, Luo’er couldn’t help feeling a bit uneasy. Thus, he turned to Wadulan and asked, "Captain Wadulan, is there a chance of encountering Leviathan on the way to Xia Yue Island?"
"Uh, there shouldn’t be," Wadulan scratched his head and pointing at the distant sea, said, "From here to Xia Yue Island, there is a shallow sea area about a hundred meters wide, where the water is generally about twenty meters deep. In principle, Leviathans shouldn’t be able to come here. Of course, I can’t guarantee it absolutely because there have been cases of Leviathans attacking merchant ships along this route."
Between Aels Continent and Xia Yue Island lies a strait. The narrowest part of the strait is roughly four hundred kilometers across, while the widest part exceeds a thousand kilometers.
The strait, over thirteen hundred kilometers long, has an average depth of around sixty meters, which happens to be a suitable depth for some medium and small-sized Leviathans to thrive. There are two separate sea basins in the strait, and between these basins is a sea ridge over a hundred meters wide. This ridge prevents the basins from connecting and has a generally shallow depth of less than twenty meters, with some areas merely ten or even just a few meters deep—impassable for Leviathans, thus effectively splitting them between the two basins.
This sea ridge serves as an important passage between the continent and Xia Yue Island, with vessels typically navigating along it between the two places.
Although there are occasional cases where a Leviathan daringly climbs onto the ridge to attack ships, most of the time, they wouldn’t risk getting stranded. The few cases that did occur were because Leviathans sought to cross the ridge to another basin and coincidentally encountered ships.
Nonetheless, Luo’er wasn’t so optimistic. Tana had already blacklisted him, and now that he was about to enter her forbidden zone, he knew this goddess would certainly not let him off easily.
Since Tana was a goddess of the world, she naturally could control everything. Although she had no power over Luo’er, controlling Leviathans was quite easy for her.
Therefore, if ordinary people might encounter Leviathans on this route, it was almost certain that Luo’er and his companions would.
"Captain, do we have weapons aboard to deal with Leviathan?" Luo’er asked anxiously, pulling Wadulan’s hand.
"Oh, I got us two cannons, which should be able to handle Leviathan," Wadulan scratched his head and said.
"There are cannons? Let’s see them," Luo’er said, his eyes lighting up as he urged immediately.
Wadulan led the group below deck, then proudly showed the Advance Team the two cannons he had purchased, saying, "I bought these in Blue Bay, genuine new goods from Earth!"
"These are...mortars..." the group paused, and Luo’er couldn’t help but smile wryly.
Hu Daoke stepped forward, inspected the mortars briefly, then turned to Luo’er and nodded, "Boss, Type 93 mortars, domestic stock."
"Uh-huh," Luo’er nodded, feeling relieved. Using mortars on the ship wasn’t an issue, especially since they were mainly intended for aquatic Leviathans, making the mortars an excellent choice.
Hu Daoke opened a nearby wooden box, took out a mortar shell, examined it briefly, then muttered to himself, "Deepwater Mortar Shells, renowned as Leviathan killers, product of Northern industry..."
"Who would have thought; Northern industry seems quite good at seizing business opportunities," Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but comment.
"Those cannons cost quite a bit; it hurts to think about it. But considering they can ensure safety, it’s worth it," Wadulan said to Luo’er.
"Besides these, is there anything else?" Luo’er paused, then asked.
"Oh, I also got a few barrels of gunpowder. I saw you guys using them last time, so I thought I’d get some for self-defense. When I bought them, those guys said they aren’t called gunpowder barrels but Deepwater Bombs," Wadulan said.
"Let’s go take a look," Luo’er said.
"Alright, this way," said Wadulan, leading the group to another storage room.
Inside the storage room, rows of metal barrels were arranged. Hu Daoke went up for a look and then turned back to Luo’er, "Boss, they really are Deepwater Bombs. You know, these are normally used with a launching device. Old Du didn’t forget to buy that, did he?"
"Of course, of course," Wadulan waved his hand and said, "They said, buy this thing and get a catapult device for free, and if you buy ten, you get one. I bought ten in one go."
"Where are they?" Luo’er asked.
"On the deck, do you want me to show you?" Wadulan asked.
"No need," Luo’er waved his hand and then said, "This thing is quite heavy, don’t keep it separated from the catapult device. It’s best to place them close together to facilitate quick loading."
"Don’t worry, Captain Luo’er, three Deepwater Shells have already been loaded, and they’re secure," Wadulan said, as if seeking praise.
"Alright, since that’s the case, we should be safe enough, I guess. As long as we go a little faster and strive to reach the coast of Xia Yue Island sooner, we likely won’t run into any trouble," Luo’er said, clapping his hands.
"Hiss..." Hu Daoke stared at the Deepwater Bomb and then looked towards Cheng Ziang, frowning and asking, "But speaking of which, shouldn’t this thing count as military weapons? How come merchants can just buy them?"
"Whether or not it’s a military weapon depends on the threat level to Earth. How would you use ship weapons against people on Earth? Would you sail a boat on dry land?" Cheng Ziang shrugged and said.
"Weird, they ban guns but not mortars..." Hu Daoke scratched his head and said.
"Haven’t you noticed? Those mortar shells seem to be all Deepwater Shells, incapable of being used for ground bombardments. The buyers can’t be more savvy than the sellers, can they? This Otherworld has a need to drive away Leviathans, naturally, Earth’s arms dealers will fill the gap," Cheng Ziang explained.
"That does make sense..." Hu Daoke nodded.
Luo’er and Wadulan went up to the deck, where the merchant ship had already adjusted its course, sailing full speed toward Xia Yue Island. Wadulan looked across the sea and then at Luo’er, unable to help himself from asking, "Captain Luo’er seems quite concerned about the Leviathans, huh?"
"Honestly," Luo’er shook his head, "it seems that we’ve caught the attention of the Leviathans. Wherever we go, they target us, which is why we’re so anxious."
Luo’er didn’t explain his grudge with Tana, because it was too complicated to explain in such a short time.
"Eh, is that so? No wonder, I thought I saw nothing last time, but they appeared as soon as we entered," Wadulan said as if a light bulb turned on in his head.
"Sorry for dragging you into this, and now we’re boarding your ship again to head for Xia Yue Island," Luo’er said with a hint of guilt.
"Oh, Captain Luo’er, what are you talking about? We’ve fought side by side before. Your matters are my matters. Don’t say such distant words," Wadulan said with a pat on his chest, generously.
Luo’er wasn’t sure if Wadulan’s attitude was because of his own background, or some other reason. Although it is often said that Blaiqi people are fickle and value profit over relationships, at that moment, Luo’er could feel the sincerity in his words.
"Speaking of which..." Wadulan paused, then continued, "It’s rather surprising to find Captain Luo’er in Ilanadale. I’ve heard that Wood Elves don’t like those of mixed heritage. You haven’t been mistreated, have you?"
"It’s alright, I spent most of my time in an Airboat and didn’t have much interaction with those Wood Elves, so it’s not a problem," Luo’er waved his hand, not revealing his relationship with Ilanadale.
"That’s good to hear, but it’s still best to be careful," Wadulan nodded and said, "Even though the Wood Elves seem to be starting to accept those of mixed heritage lately, I guess their underlying aversion will last for a long time. So Captain Luo’er, it’s better to visit Ilanadale less often, in case you suffer from any malicious slander by those Wood Elves."
"Thanks for your concern," Luo’er nodded lightly and said.
After speaking, both men suddenly fell silent. Luo’er gazed at the sea, his unease growing inside him. He took out the Soul Summoning Bell from his chest and shook it vigorously, and the bell immediately emitted an eerie sound that captivated one’s soul.
