Chapter 1012: Chapter 1005: The Sea Monster
However, Wadulan seemed to pay no mind to Luo’er’s reaction and continued to scrutinize the sea surface through his telescope. The two of them stood on the mast, blown by the sea breeze for over half an hour, until finally Wadulan put down the telescope and asserted, "Hmm, it seems the Leviathan is not around this area."
"Is it really safe?" Luo’er asked worriedly.
"I can’t be completely sure, but I have at least ninety percent confidence," Wadulan assured, patting his chest.
"Then let’s act according to the captain’s wishes. Here, captain, be careful when going down," Luo’er nodded and then reached out to help Wadulan descend.
The waves were somewhat strong, and Wadulan was cautious as he went down, so he was very thankful for Luo’er’s help; upon reaching the deck, he grasped his hand excitedly, saying, "Thanks, Captain Luo’er."
"You are too kind, captain," Luo’er said with a somewhat awkward smile.
"I am starting to think more and more that he is coveting Luo’er’s beauty," Tangmo murmured gloomily, staring at the two.
"The route is safe, setting sail!" After thanking Luo’er, the captain waved his hand and loudly instructed the sailors.
At his command, the merchant ship raised its anchor and then unfurled the sails to start sailing. Though the route was considered safe, Wadulan remained cautious, ordering the ship to hug the coast as much as possible to avoid any surprise attacks from the Leviathan.
The key to traversing these dangerous waters was to do so in one go, according to Wadulan’s experience. Once the safety of the water area was roughly confirmed, the ship should swiftly and fully sail through the region. Some inexperienced captains would sail close to the shore cautiously, only to waste too much time and be noticed by the Leviathan.
Of course, rapid sailing also faced the risk of the ship running aground, so to be extra cautious, Wadulan didn’t dare let the first mate steer but took the helm himself. Despite his bulky appearance, he was quite strong, and he hadn’t forgotten a bit of his old skills.
When the merchant ship set sail, the north wind was strong. The ship stretched its sails to the full and, using the wind power, sped along the cliff’s edge, leaving the area swiftly.
Despite the calm sea in front of them, which only stirred up a wave now and then, Luo’er couldn’t shake off an ominous feeling. Midway through the sailing, as Feng, who was standing on deck watching the sea, suddenly unsheathed her knife without warning, producing a noticeable sound of the blade being drawn.
"What’s wrong, Feng?" Cheng Ziang sensed something amiss and hurriedly asked.
Feng didn’t speak but stared intently at the sea, her breath gradually becoming rapid. Along with her rapid breathing, her originally expressionless face also slowly turned solemn.
"There is, there is something coming..." Feng pointed at the sea and after taking a deep breath, her voice trembled slightly as she spoke.
"What is it?" Cheng Ziang pressed.
"I don’t know, it’s very powerful, very powerful, the presence is very strong," Feng replied, her voice shaking more and more.
"Luo’er, something’s not right!" Cheng Ziang raised his head and shouted loudly at Luo’er.
"What’s wrong?" Hearing his alarm, Luo’er rushed to their side and asked anxiously.
"Feng senses something approaching," Cheng Ziang’s words turned Luo’er’s face deathly pale.
He ran to the stern under the rudder and then waved his hands, shouting loudly to Wadulan, "Captain Wadulan, something seems off, can we turn back?"
"What’s going on, did you see something?" Wadulan asked, looking perplexed.
"Something is approaching from the deep sea!" Luo’er replied.
"Damn, how could this happen, it makes no sense," Wadulan muttered through gritted teeth, his face turning pale instantly.
"Can we turn back now?" Luo’er asked.
"It’s a northerly wind now, turning back means heading into the wind; we can only charge forward!" Wadulan said through clenched teeth.
"Our safety is in your hands, captain," Luo’er stated.
"Don’t worry, I’ll do my best," Wadulan replied, struggling with the helm, his voice lacking some confidence.
"Fula, notify everyone, enter the first-level battle preparedness, all hands on deck ready to fight!" Luo’er commanded loudly into the air.
"Received!" The voice of Fulajie’er came in his mind, but only Luo’er could hear it.
Soon, the previously calm seawater suddenly started to ripple, growing more and more intense. Roughly half a minute later, about 500 meters from the merchant ship, the water suddenly converged and began swirling, gradually forming a massive whirlpool.
"A whirlpool in the sea, no mistake, no mistake, it’s Leviathan..." Wadulan exclaimed, his voice beginning to tremble.
"How can this be, wasn’t there a 90 percent chance?" Luo’er asked as he looked at Wadulan.
"I don’t know," Wadulan said, shaking his sleeves frantically, appearing somewhat panicked. "According to our experience, we shouldn’t have encountered Leviathan, how, how..."
Though panicked, Wadulan managed to keep a level of calm, and after a brief moment of brain-freeze, he quickly shouted, "Drop the sails and anchor, quickly drop the anchor!"
"Don’t we just charge through?" Luo’er asked.
"Can’t break through, I’ve seen such whirlpools. No ship caught by such a large whirlpool has ever escaped," Wadulan said with utter despair in his voice.
"Then we’ll have to handle it the hard way." Luo’er turned and exchanged a glance with Cheng Ziang, then said through clenched teeth.
Fortunately, the ship sailed close to cliffs. Following Wadulan’s command, the heavy anchor was thrown into the water and latched onto the seabed in the shallows.
As the whirlpool gradually became more pronounced, the merchant ship also began to rock due to the waves. Thankfully, the ship’s anchor seemed to have hooked onto the seabed rocks. Despite the tossing, the ship was not pulled into the distant whirlpool.
Before long, Tangmo and others tripped and stumbled out from the cabin, and upon seeing Luo’er, Tangmo stepped forward, grabbed his hand, and asked worriedly, "What’s going on?"
"Something’s not right, we’ve probably encountered Leviathan." Luo’er said, breathing hard but still composed.
"Wasn’t it supposed to be safe?" Tangmo asked, his eyes widening and trembling.
"Who knows, just get ready for battle quickly," Luo’er said.
"Right, I understand," Tangmo nodded vigorously, then let go of Luo’er’s hand, staggered to the ship’s side, and drew his magic wand from his waist.
Seeing her actions, Luo’er suddenly had a thought, and then he turned around to loudly tell Feng, "Feng, be ready for battle at any moment!"
"Understood!" Feng nodded, then gripped her long sword tightly. She positioned her legs apart, standing firmly on the deck, and bowed her head, closing her eyes to channel the magic within her.
Hu Daoke, with a light machine gun mounted at the ship’s side, then turned back and shouted, "Boss, apart from the whirlpool, I can’t see anything at sea. How do we attack?"
Hu Daoke’s words threw Luo’er into deep thought. If Leviathan was hiding in the sea and drawing them toward the whirlpool, they really had no way of defending themselves.
Not to mention that bullets lose their momentum three meters into water, even with a leviathan slayer like Feng, they had to wait until Leviathan surfaced before they could attack. After all, Feng only had one chance, and if she missed, they would truly be in complete despair.
Seeing the scene in front of her, Talis, who had just run onto the deck, suddenly knelt down and crossed her fingers in front of her chest, bowed her head, and prayed in Elvish.
Seeing her act, Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but clench his teeth and curse, "You ask gods instead of people?"
"Even if there were gods, with Xiapei Kam trapped on Xia Yue Island, they couldn’t help us," Luo’er said, glancing at her, lips pursed in a bitter expression.
"We can only rely on ourselves now." The two exchanged looks and then nodded determinedly.
"I’ll help too." Axia and Eve neither knelt to pray nor resigned themselves to fate but came to Luo’er, each holding a rifle and seriously said.
"Thanks to you both," Luo’er nodded, his heart, which had been sinking into despair, suddenly ignited with a flame to survive.
