Chapter 94: Chapter 86 A Bastard, a Poet (Seeking Monthly Tickets)

The noble’s report left King Dovlo unable to contain his excitement.

"God... there is another race in this world that can speak besides us and the Unihorns!"

King Dovlo said, filled with wonder.

Hearing King Dovlo’s words, the noble realized something.

He became even more panicked and then said,

"King, not only can those Three-eyed Ape People speak, they, they... their language is exactly the same as ours!

I originally thought that these Three-eyed Ape People had their own language, just like the Unihorns, but, but, that group of Three-eyed Ape People... they actually spoke our language!

My Hunters reported that the difference between the two languages is merely some strange tones and accents."

The noble’s words made King Dovlo even more amazed; the language of the Logos people was given by God, and even their close Unihorn kin could not master it.

Could there really be another race that has mastered the Logos people’s language?

"Could our God have also endowed them with reason? Impossible... There’s nothing of the sort in the history books of my father!"

King Dovlo exclaimed. He snatched the wood board from the noble’s hand and scrutinized the portrayals on it carefully.

The painting was somewhat crude, depicting Three-eyed Ape People in twos and threes, with the hair on their faces receded, and still covered with plenty of soft fur, but what caught one’s attention was the third eye on the forehead of this race.

What was that eye for?

King Dovlo pondered subconsciously.

However, the noble’s words interrupted King Dovlo’s train of thought.

"King, they, they are not endowed with reason by God!"

The noble was even more agitated now, using body language to aid his expression,

"My Hunters say that this group of Three-eyed Ape People worships a prophetic God named Kagawus, and they receive oracles every generation. These Three-eyed Ape People even claim that it was Kagawus who created the world.

God, they’re simply spouting nonsense!

And the lifespan of these Three-eyed Ape People is not as long as ours; they live a mere eighty years, which is truly tragic. What can one even do in just eighty years?"

The noble laid out all the information he knew, while King Dovlo listened on the side, growing increasingly astonished.

"This group of Three-eyed Ape People is just like... characters stepped right out of a story."

King Dovlo said after hearing all the details.

"King, what should we do?"

The noble now showed deep concern. As a noble guarding the Kingdom Border, he typically defended against wolves, lions, mammoths, or even Earth Dragons, and thus viewed this suddenly encountered intelligent race with caution.

King Dovlo, who normally governed in the Royal City, had no such caution. On the contrary, he felt a deep curiosity about this race named the Three-eyed Ape People.

"A prophetic God named Kagawus... My uncle Dertulian mentioned Him on the stone tablet he sent back. These Three-eyed Ape People must have something to do with that prophetic God."

King Dovlo murmured to himself, pacing back and forth in the Palace, ceaselessly pondering a course of action.

The noble watched King Dovlo anxiously, hoping fervently that King Dovlo would strengthen the Kingdom Border defenses, or better, order a military expedition to annihilate this bizarre race outright.

After an unknown amount of time, King Dovlo stopped in his tracks.

The middle-aged King looked up and said,

"Contact them, see what kind of race they truly are! This will definitely benefit our Kingdom."

King Dovlo swept his hand grandly and strode out of the Palace, determined to consult with the Priests in the Pattern Garden before reaching a decision with the other Nobles.

The Border noble was left standing alone in the grand hall of the Palace.

.........

After King Dovlo brought information on the Three-eyed Ape People to the Pattern Garden, there erupted a fierce debate among the Priests.

They immediately divided into two factions, one advocating for contact with the Three-eyed Ape People, while the other held a negative stance, and some extremists even called for an expedition to exterminate this unknown race.

In the Pattern Garden full of wheat, the dispute among the Priests lasted for a day and a night, and just when King Dovlo’s ears were about to develop calluses from listening, they finally voted by raising their hands and came to a conclusion.

The faction advocating for contact with the Three-eyed Ape People prevailed in the end, deciding to form a Vanguard in order to make contact with the group of Three-eyed Ape People.

King Dovlo was quite satisfied with the result and called for an assembly of influential Royal City Nobles in the Palace the next day to discuss the important decision.

Compared to the generally knowledgeable Priests, the Royal City Nobles were much more indifferent towards the Three-eyed Ape People.

Although the Nobles expressed great curiosity upon hearing the news brought by King Dovlo, there was no dispute over whether or not to make contact with the Three-eyed Ape People.

At last, the Logos Kingdom decided to dispatch a small Vanguard into the deserts of the Kingdom Border to seek out that group of Three-eyed Ape People.

A few days later, the members of the Vanguard were selected.

............

............

Basel.

A member selected for the vanguard.

His name held a simple meaning, a person like a king.

Due to the respect the people of Logos had for their king, such names were quite common.

Basically, if someone shouted "Basel," two or three heads would turn in response.

Ironically, this Basel’s circumstances were the exact opposite of his name.

Basel’s mother had been a slave, and after she was freed by an edict of King Yarlessto, she became a prostitute and died when Basel was young.

However, what was commendable was that Basel could read, taught by a kindly priest.

The literate Basel fell in love with poetry.

But... he stammered when nervous, and therefore was not good at performing.

This was fatal for a poet.

Regarding his downtrodden life,

Basel was now etching an easy-to-recite poem onto a wooden plank:

"I am an orphan, descendant of a prostitute

Cast out in the midst of poverty, with a natural talent for singing the sorrows of life.

Born disheveled and dirty,

He had no relatives,

And would never see his father even as he approached death.

I am an orphan.

Forever lonely.

Even with education from a good priest, with innate skill,

Yet hardships, like the sea’s waves,

He could only watch and weep in vain.

I am an orphan.

And a bastard at that.

Too many honors crushing his chest,

The road ahead far from view."

Having written this far, Basel laid down his bone knife; his literacy had given him the advantage to be selected as part of the vanguard, taking on the role of a recorder in the team.

At this moment, his spirits were high, and although he could not predict the future direction, he continued writing:

"A chance strikes, clearing past gloom,

Orphan, bastard, son of a whore.

Opportunity arises to forge legend.

A storm seeks to claim his world,

Yet he, oddly enough, wishes to be the sole vessel carrying legend.

Let the storm ally with hardship,

Adding to the vastness of suffering.

Yet on me remains faith,

Willing to stop at nothing, to achieve the ideals within my heart."

Basel wrote this long poem up to here, for he had not yet experienced the future, unsure of what else there was to write.

He could not carve the next words, just as he could not be certain what the future held,

Yet,

Regardless,

This long poem would encapsulate Basel’s life.
