Only God
Chapter 108 - 97 They are not the Sons of God_2

Chapter 108: Chapter 97 They are not the Sons of God_2

Hearing this, King Dovlo was somewhat agitated; he faintly realized that the words of the High Priest held some kind of transformative power.

"Well, in the name of God, let’s do as you say."

That power was called law.

The emergence of law was neither smooth nor accomplished overnight.

After the High Priest of the Pattern Garden’s proposal spread, voices of opposition arose throughout the kingdom, with the powerful nobles in the Royal Capital repeatedly seeking an audience with King Dovlo.

By contrast, the suggestion to simplify the historical records was embraced and approved by the priests of the Pattern Garden, as well as the commoners in the country.

The High Priest led by selecting the most important sentences to display to the people of Logos. The people cheered, celebrating the simplification of the "Book of Kings and Prophets."

In the palace, nobles and priests constantly fought over the simplification of historical records, and despite King Dovlo’s repeated mediations and pleadings, neither side was willing to give up the fight.

Even several large-scale violent conflicts broke out in the Royal Capital.

King Dovlo was worn out by it all.

He was not his father, King Yarlessto, possessing enough wisdom and skill to rule the kingdom and create remarkable achievements that consolidated authority; nor was he the first Monarch, Sapo King, who subdued his subjects with martial prowess from hunting and carved out the kingdom’s earliest territories.

He was merely Dovlo.

At times, King Dovlo felt he was nothing more than a clever man upon the throne, feigning majesty, but in reality, weak and easy to bully.

The monarch’s crown became heavier, and the King’s Throne colder.

Fortunately...

He had his eldest son, Rui Ying.

Rui Ying’s presence made up for many of his shortcomings.

He was grateful to have a son like Rui Ying, capable enough to be his right-hand man.

King Dovlo sat in front of the altar in the palace court, wearily rubbing his forehead.

"Father."

Unbeknownst to him, Rui Ying suddenly stood behind King Dovlo, as if he had emerged from the earth.

King Dovlo turned around, meeting Rui Ying’s gaze.

"Rui Ying, my son."

King Dovlo began, standing up and caressing Rui Ying’s cheek.

"Father, you are too weary."

Rui Ying stared at King Dovlo’s increasingly aged eyes and said,

"You are their king! They are meant to serve you!"

King Dovlo was stunned.

His son’s words struck his heart, yes, he was too weary, he was the king of the Logos people, all those endlessly quarreling noble priests were his subjects, meant to serve him.

Rui Ying looked into King Dovlo’s eyes and continued,

"They praise you, they admire you.

But, Father... in their actions, they expect you to serve them. Don’t you find that unreasonable?"

King Dovlo listened intently, his heart wavered.

Indignation surged within him.

Rui Ying continued,

"Father,

You are simply sullying your authority!

Do you show any semblance of a king’s resolute command?"

Eldest son Rui Ying was revealing the truths one by one, peeling back his guise of majesty to reveal the weakness within.

King Dovlo shook, his eyes wide, he said,

"Rui Ying, do you think I do not wish to be resolute? Is ruling this kingdom so simple?"

King Dovlo raised his voice.

His tone was like a reprimand, the crown atop his head trembling.

"Who do you think I am? I am the son of Yarlessto, a descendant of Prophet Al!"

"Rui Ying, I want to rule this kingdom, I want to be a true Monarch! A Monarch who adheres to morality!"

Rui Ying stared straight at his father, a cold laugh escaping him,

"Father, a true Monarch does not tremble on his throne."

"Look at King Yarlessto, look at Sapo King! Their authority made people bow down!"

"What about yours? Where is your authority?!"

"High upon the throne you sit, but in reality, you bow and scrape before ministers and nobles!"

"My father,"

"It’s because of the king that it’s called a kingdom!"

"They should be trembling, bowing and scraping, not you!"

Rui Ying’s words grew heavier, his voice louder, like a boulder pressing down on King Dovlo’s chest, suffocating him.

"Father, look at King Yarlessto’s achievements."

"To achieve both civil and martial excellence, it is not about how piously one honors God!"

"Rather, it is about... achieving our great undertakings in the name of God!"

Rui Ying’s voice echoed in King Dovlo’s ears, and his figure suddenly loomed larger, casting a shadow that could cover an entire area.

King Dovlo stepped back, his chest heaving with each breath.

In the name of God...

To accomplish one’s own achievements in the name of God, to solidify one’s own authority.

Rui Ying had never experienced the era when God was still present; since his birth, God had already departed.

In the eyes of this ambitious prince, God Himself was not important; the name of God was what mattered most.

King Dovlo’s soul was completely conquered by his eldest son.

"How are we to proceed? Rui Ying, what do you intend to do?"

King Dovlo breathed heavily, asking the question.

"Three-eyed Apemen, my father,"

Rui Ying stepped forward slowly and continued:

"They are too extraordinary, they reproduce like beasts, much more prolific than the Logos people, and... those eyes can prophecy the future..."

King Dovlo vaguely grasped the idea of Rui Ying and looked at his eldest son with astonishment.

"Rui Ying, King Yarlessto has clearly pardoned all slaves, as a son of God."

"I know... and because of that, we can enslave the Three-eyed Ape People, Father, like taming beasts, herding livestock."

Rui Ying slowly turned his head and said word by word:

"After all... they are not the children of God."

Only...

The Logos people are the children of God.

Besides them,

All are beasts and livestock.

.........

.........

King Dovlo did not refuse his eldest son Rui Ying.

But he had yet to give an affirmative response.

This hesitant ruler was no longer young; he lacked the decisiveness and risk-taking of youth, and he felt guilty about the friendship he had proclaimed with the Three-eyed Apemen.

But there was no doubt,

King Dovlo had thoroughly leaned toward Rui Ying’s side.

He sent different emissaries multiple times, relocating the tribes of Three-eyed Apemen to the Logos Kingdom.

King Dovlo began to encourage his ministers and nobles to employ these Three-eyed Apemen as servants in their homes.

During this time, the dispute over the simplification of historical records had finally come to an end.

In the squabbles between nobles and priests, it was the nobles who conceded, culminating in a victory for the priests.

The language in the "Book of Kings and Prophets" was finally simplified, and the most important twenty articles became the moral baseline for every Logos person.

This was,

The birth of law.

.........

In the blink of an eye, a hundred years passed.

The priests of Logos received the historical tablets delivered by the Unihorns.

It was a brand-new history book, compiled by King Dertulian, the son of the Prophet.

While King Dovlo treated it with great respect, he marveled at the long life of his uncle.

King Dertulian was nearly eight hundred years old and considered one of the longest-lived among the Logos people.

According to the Unihorns, King Dertulian had been seriously ill twice during these hundred years but managed to survive each time with his tenacious vitality.

In contrast to King Dertulian’s robust old age, King Dovlo felt increasingly weak during these days.

The struggle between nobles and priests had not calmed down with the establishment of the law; if anything, it had intensified.

King Dovlo made every effort to reconcile the conflict between the two sides, even at the expense of trampling on his own authority.

And the result?

The only outcome was that the conflict remained unresolved, whilst his own authority was trampled upon in vain.

King Dovlo thought again about Rui Ying’s suggestion...

Compared to the Logos people, the Three-eyed Apemen had a much shorter lifespan.

In just a hundred years, the generation of Three-eyed Apemen that had declared friendship with the Logos people was no longer of this world.

Perhaps...

He could do as Rui Ying had suggested.

Domesticate those Three-eyed Apemen, like domesticating livestock.
