Chapter 107: Chapter 97 They are not the Sons of God

The passing of Elder Salas brought profound grief to the Three-eyed Ape People.

He was one of the oldest among the Ape-men, and everyone in the tribe respected him as they would respect a father.

In honor of Elder Salas, the Three-eyed Ape People mourned for fifteen consecutive days, and Basel stayed there all fifteen days.

The death of Elder Salas left Basel restless, and even on the day he left the desert, he hadn’t come to his senses.

Though Elder Salas had died, to bid farewell to the Elder’s friend, the Ape-men still held a modest banquet for Basel.

Men and women sang poems for him, children held his hand, affectionately calling him ’elf,’ while the surrounding priests patiently listened to him speak...

The warmth Basel felt here was more than he had ever felt in the Kingdom combined.

On the day he left, Basel finally regained some spirit and bid farewell to the Three-eyed Ape People, who earnestly urged him to return often and visit Elder Salas’s grave.

After crossing the desert again, Basel returned to the Kingdom and brought the news of Elder Salas’s death by illness to the King.

In the stone-built palace.

Basel looked up at King Dovlo sitting on the King’s Throne.

It was clearly a sad piece of news.

Yet, Basel seemed to see a gleam of greed flicker in King Dovlo’s eyes beneath his sorrowful exterior.

The disheartened poet doubted his own eyes,

for, after all, wasn’t the King supposed to be a model for his subjects? How could the King be like this?

King Dovlo must be feeling no better in his heart.

"Basel, you may go now. Your reward will be sent to you later."

From atop the throne, King Dovlo said authoritatively.

"Your Majesty, please give those rewards to the Three-eyed Ape People..."

Basel stepped forward and pleaded.

King Dovlo glanced at Basel, his intimidating gaze making Basel involuntarily fear.

"I will naturally provide the Three-eyed Ape People with mourning gifts."

Having said this, King Dovlo gestured for the guards to escort Basel out.

After Basel had left, King Dovlo turned to his eldest son, Rui Ying.

"Father, it will soon be time for your audience with the nobles and ministers."

Rui Ying spoke thus.

King Dovlo nodded slightly.

The life of a king was not an easy one.

As king, he had to manage all governmental affairs, mediate disputes among the nobles, attend banquets hosted by noble priests, and endure various complaints, disrespect, and even slander and manipulation.

Previously, King Dovlo envied his father, King Yarlessto, hoping to be like him—a pious, conflict-mediating, morally-upright monarch.

Now, King Dovlo envied King Sapo who ruled decisively, able to execute subjects who defied him and throw priests of fire into the flames.

Soon after, nobles and ministers began entering the court.

After a simple audience ceremony, the various nobles and ministers reported governmental affairs to King Dovlo or presented their disputes for his judgment.

King Dovlo listened carefully to each noble and minister, then made decisions in a commanding yet fair voice.

All the while, King Dovlo carefully considered each word he was about to speak, shaping his tone accordingly—if it was a mild-mannered minister, King Dovlo’s tone became indisputable, but if faced with a hot-tempered minister, the King had to humble himself and soften his tone.

King Dovlo relied not on exceptional military strength or prominent achievements but on limited justice, wisdom, and insight to barely navigate through politics with ease.

Being such a monarch left King Dovlo utterly exhausted.

At the end of the political proceedings, a High Priest from the Pattern Garden stepped forward.

"In God’s name, my King, I have a proposal!"

A weary King Dovlo straightened his body and said loudly:

"Speak, High Priest."

The High Priest solemnly nodded, took a deep breath, and continued:

"My King, we now depend on historical records to regulate our lives—a truly great initiative by you."

"All credit goes to God. Under His guidance, my father wrote that historical record."

King Dovlo spoke thus.

The High Priest nodded again, repeating it before continuing:

"Now, the priests at the Pattern Garden and I say: present practices follow the historical records, yet there are countless sentences in the records—how to determine which ones should truly be implemented?"

King Dovlo raised his eyebrows, questioning:

"What do you mean?"

"My King, don’t you think we should simplify the historical records, select the most essential sentences to serve as the operational guidelines for the entire Kingdom?"

The High Priest stood up, and with a surge of emotion, persuaded:

"Is there no hierarchy of principles in the world? Are there no superior or inferior statements in the historical records?

From ’The Book of Kings and Prophets,’ we select the statements and establish moral boundaries that no Logos person should cross.

My King, such rule—how can the Kingdom not prosper? How can our race not be glorious?"

Seeing that King Dovlo appeared contemplative, the High Priest seized the opportunity to continue:

"Moreover, given the abundance of records, who can ensure that they won’t contravene the historical records in their lifetime?
