Chapter 39: Picking things up

Chapter 39: Picking things up

"Goodness.. Isn’t that old old?" Coco blurted out the words before she could think, making her eyes go wide further and making the old man squint his eyes further.

"What did you say?" The old man asked, his voice dangerously low.

"Nothing!" Coco was quick to save herself from the impending doom coming her way, the old man seems like he’s quite emotional in terms of his old age.

"No, no, no.. You did say something." The old man insisted and furrowed his eyebrows.

"No, I really didn’t say anything." Coco insisted further, not wanting to get on the old man’s bad side when he was the only one who treated Coco Hughes like a normal being and not a trash of the village.

The old man got silent.

He knew that Coco should have known about his age because he had talked about it several times in the past. They were practically almost drinking buddies by how much Coco Hughes came over to the store.

Did she hit her head or something? The old man wondered, eyeing Coco from head to toe.

She wasn’t the type to pick up heavyweights or work out, but the muscular physique was still evident, her arms and her legs toned.

She was young, that much was obvious, but the strength in her limbs, the confidence in her bearing, and the rumors around the town indicated that she was far from her old self.

She stood with a slight ease, her body loose and relaxed, yet there was a hint of tension in her frame, as if she were constantly ready for action— well, it was said around the village that she had been hunting.

The old man nodded in approval, impressed by the obvious improvement of her physical state.

"Alright." The old man hummed out which made Coco let out a sigh of relief, "I’m only a hundred and forty three, I’m young and I would prefer to be called by name."

"I understand, Old Josh." Coco nodded her head in understanding and tightened her grip on the sack, holding herself back from saying anything offending.

"That sounds better." Old Josh huffed out, a small and pleased smile creeping to his lips.

"He’s so picky about his name." Lala commented, leaning her small body on Coco’s cheek, "But I guess he doesn’t want to be called an old man that bad.. I mean, I wouldn’t like it if you just called me garden fairy or fairy."

Now that Coco is in front of someone, she can’t respond to Lala anymore. However, to not prolong their stay, she asked for the things she ordered that morning.

"Are the soaps, essential oils, and tea that I ordered earlier already packed and ready to go? I can’t be home late because they need to eat."

Old Josh must have suddenly realized that she was there to get her orders and not to have a conversation with him because his eyes widened slightly as the realization dawned on him.

His face was twisted into an apologetic one as he spoke in a guilty tone, "Forgive me, child. I was just excited to see you and forgot about it, but don’t worry! I already have it packed by the door! You can go and take it."

"No worries." Coco dismissed his apologetic ramblings and walked towards the door, "Mind opening it for me, Old Josh?"

"I don’t mind." The old man sauntered towards her and opened the door— the sight of the cleanly woven bag made out of large leaves on the ground with several pouches inside had caught her attention almost immediately.

"Those are the things you ordered this morning." Old Josh said, watching as Coco picked up the heavy bag filled with soaps, essential oils, and tea with ease.

"Thank you for packing these in a good quality bag." Coco stated, patting the bag lightly.

"You’re welcome. You can take it as a token of gratitude because of the fruits you gave me earlier." Old Josh chuckled out, raising his hand and rubbing his beard with a pleased expression.

"Don’t mention it." Coco hummed out and looked down on the bag, "Can you tell me how to differentiate the scent of the soap and the essential oil?"

"The dark colored ones in soap are rose, chamomile, and lavender while the light ones are mint and lemon." Old Josh informed her while pointing on the soaps, "The essential oils have orange bottle for the orange oil, yellow bottle for lemon, green bottle for eucalyptus, transparent bottle for chamomile, and red bottle for rose."

Coco nodded her head as the old man pointed at the bottles and said what they were. When he was done, Coco hums and asks, "I’m guessing the teas have labels on them?"

"Yes." Old Josh smiled, "I don’t have much tea in my store, but I placed three hibiscus, three lavender, three chamomile, and hmm.. I think it was catnip? Though, I heard catnips can be used to calm cats, it’s still effective with humans as well."

"I see, I see.. If my husbands likes them, I’ll make sure to come back to buy some more." Coco said, tightening her grip on the bag and sack, "I’ll be on my way now, it’s already dark."

"Have a safe trip." Old Josh wished for her safety, waving towards her as he watched her blend into the crowd.

The way to the house of Coco Hughes and her husbands was quick and short, it didn’t even take her ten minutes before she saw the house in the distance.

"It’s not nice to see you buying a lot of things for them, Coco." The garden fairy, who was silent the whole time she was conversing with Old Josh and on the way to the house, spoke up with a saddened tone.

"You brought them good things, but didn’t buy some for yourself." Lala whimpered out.

"Please treat yourself to something nice after you drop off the things you need to give them, okay?"
