Chapter 37: Gold coins
"Can I have two kilos of spare ribs?"
"That would be one gold coin." Jacques said, her voice soft and gentle as she smiled politely to the male mediator in front of her.
"What?" The mediator’s eyebrows furrowed in angered confusion, "How much for a kilo then?"
"Five hundred silver coins." Coco butted in, a dangerous glint flashing on her eyes as she looked at the mediator who looked like he was ready to lunge at Jacques.
The mediator took a step back, recognizing Coco’s face and voice, not wanting to get into a fight with someone who brought home a poison tiger and a flying pig in a span of two days— without a scratch, too.
"O-Okay!" The mediator nervously shrieked and threw a dirty pouch with loose seams to Jacques, "I’ll take two kilos of spared ribs!"
Jacques was quick on her feet, her reflexes acting faster than lightning and catched the pouch before it could fall below her head, she catched the pouch like how a catcher would catch the baseball that the pitcher threw.
Coco knew that Jacques would be good at selling the meat and would be the perfect person to be placed in front due to how she reacted to Coco earlier.
She always has eyes for good people after all.
"Two kilos of spared ribs!" Coco said, smirking broadly towards the seemingly hot tempered mediator.
The business went well for the day and they managed to sell all of the pork they had on display. Coco had been up since early morning and suddenly got attacked by the flying pig, but her hard work had paid off.
The business of the day was clearly booming, featuring butchered flying pig. They managed to sell all of the pork on display and Renaldo even had to bring out more from the back.
Coco and Jacques had been serving the long line of customers, selling the pork in a continuous flow of customers and sales.
The village folks had been eager to purchase the monster pork, having heard of how tasty and mouth watering it was, making the sellers able to sell every last scrap of pig meat
Luckily, Coco manages to haggle and negotiate with possible repeating buyers while Renaldo accurately cuts out small portions and large slabs of meat and Jacques measures the weight by lifting it.
Jacques accurately gives away a kilo of flying pork, making Coco and Lala amazed at her unique skill.
Nonetheless, by the end of the day, the married couple were visibly exhausted, but satisfied with a job well done.
Coco was very pleased that today’s business day had been very profitable. They had managed to sell all of their pork, much to her delight.
The display was empty, the store closed, and the black haired young woman was counting the money they earned for the day, grinning ear to ear with a satisfied smile, happy with the day’s profits.
"How much did we earn, Coco?" Lala asked the human, flying from left to right, brimming with so much excitement.
Coco ignored the fairy’s question and continued to count the coins before her.
Renaldo and Jacques are cleaning the interior of the store, leaving the counting to Coco because Coco had shown how great she was when it comes to fast calculation.
It took Coco another five minutes to finish counting, the clinking of the gold and silver coins echoing inside the quiet space, making it sound pleasant for the ears of everyone who hears it.
"Okay!" Coco exclaimed and slammed her hands on the wooden counter where she placed all the coins, "Rebaldo, my friend, you can have this."
Renaldo ceased his wiping on the countertops and turned to look at Coco, "Have what?"
"Ooh! That’s so nice of you, Coco!" Lala giggled and stared at the six gold coins on her human friend’s hand, "Six? That’s so generous of you!"
Of course, the two other humans can’t hear her, but Renaldo has the same shocked and awestruck expression on his face as he look at the coins playing Coco’s palm.
"Six coins?" Renaldo asked, his jaw dropping at the gold coins before him.
"Oh.." Coco blinked and took another two gold coins from the pile of coins on the table, "Not enough? Here."
"No!" Renaldo exclaimed, holding his hands out and waving them frantically, "That’s not what I meant— Isn’t six gold coins too much? You already gave me five gold coins yesterday!"
"It’s too much?" Coco asked, eyebrows furrowed as she looked at the coins in her hand, "Just how much does a normal worker earns in their job monthly?"
"From what my friends say, most of them earn fifteen to twenty gold coins." Jacques said, a look of pondering in her face, "Some of them earn twenty five gold coins though, but if they’re just workers with bosses, their monthly salary is ranging from one gold coin to two gold coins and a hundred silver coins."
Coco nodded her head in understanding and still held out her hands towards Renaldo, "Still, I’ll start giving you two money because it wasn’t just me who started the business— I only hunt, but Renaldo butcher the games and starting tomorrow, Jacques will be the one to sell the meat."
The married couple got silent, staring at Coco.
"I’ll give six gold coins to Renaldo and four gold coins to Jacques. How about that? Is that good enough?" Coco smiled softly at them, completely dismissing their worries about her money.
Renaldo could only let out a sigh, "If you’re going to give us gold coins everyday then it would have been better if you won’t give us meat from the monster you hunted."
"But why? It’s the game I hunted myself, I can do whatever I want with it." Coco said, her nose scrunched up in confusion.
"Stubborn as a tough crocodile." Renaldo muttered, sighing deeply and accepting the gold coins as he lowered his head, "Thank you. I’ll be forever in your care."
