Chapter 140: SCOLDING THE NOBLEWOMAN
Chapter 140: SCOLDING THE NOBLEWOMAN
[Everything is going well here.] Aristia was about to wipe her mouth and get up when all of a sudden,
"Pah!"
"Ah"
Aristia’s head snapped in the direction of the sound. She held back a groan. [Gosh! Did I jinx myself?!]
A server lay on the ground rubbing her cheek, and towering over her was a noble lady from minor nobility. Aristia thought she had seen her maybe once or twice.
The lady was glowering at the poor server. Everyone else just acted like there was nothing wrong with her action which gave her the confidence to continue.
Aristia was shocked at the sight. She felt anger bubbling within her, but on the surface she was as calm as the ocean before a storm came.
She sighed and stood up.
"Princess?" Adeline called her, also moving to get up, but she completely ignored her.
"The servers in this restaurant are so uncultured. Where is the manager? I demand that this filthy girl be—" As she spoke, she moved her leg to kick the lady who was already on the floor.
"What do you think you’re doing?!"
The voice stopped her in her tracks, her slightly raised leg paused midair. The noblewoman turned to see the owner of the voice that seemed to belong to a child, her eyes narrowed.
"Who do you think you—" she swallowed her words when she saw who the person was and sweated when she recalled the words she had wanted to spew about who the person thought she was. "T-third princess?"
Aristia approached with a smirk, "What do we have here? A noblewoman causing such a scene in public?"
Everyone noticed Aristia coming toward the noblewoman. The chatter in the hall quieted down but the whispers increased.
The noblewoman quietly retracted her leg and smiled fawningly, "That... third Princess, Aristia. It’s not what it looks like—"
"Then what does it look like? Because it surely doesn’t look like you were about to kick her." Aristia interrupted.
The noblewoman was stunned when she was interrupted but she continued, "This server was being disrespectful. I asked her to pass me the water but she did not!" The noblewoman said as if it was a very grave mistake.
Dahlia also arrived at that moment but was silent since it was clear Aristia had gone out of her seat for a reason.
Aristia looked at the table and the chair the noblewoman had been sitting on. The glass of water was right in front of the chair and was close enough to reach. She was left speechless.
The girl on the floor lowered her head. She seemed to want to say something but hesitated. A bright red handprint was clearly visible on her face and she trembled.
Other servers went about their duties while glancing at her with pity in their eyes.
"What happened?" Aristia asked the server.
The server wasn’t feeling assured with the third princess here, but the little princess had asked what happened. She couldn’t ignore her.
Besides, the princess gave off a feeling of assurance and comfort. The female server felt she had gone mad from the pain in her cheek
"Third Princess, I... I didn’t hear her ask for water. Her voice was so low that I thought she was speaking to her companion." She explained.
"How dare you wench—"
"Mind your manners, lady." Aristia snapped at her, then she delivered her judgement. "You have acted uncultured as a part of nobility. A noblewoman mistreating the people of Amberale?"
The woman was embarrassed at being scolded. Anger filled her, but she was aware of who she was speaking to.
This was the royal family’s beloved third princess, but the willful, arrogant, tyrant princess of the kingdom.
She didn’t want to offend either the princess or her family anymore than she had done by using bad words in her presence.
It was common knowledge in Amberale that even though she was a five year old, she could be considered to be seven or eight years old, enough to understand what was going on, so it wasn’t considered strange for her to speak the way she did. The same applied to all with royal blood in Amberale.
The noblewoman didn’t want Aristia to tell on her as her words would be viewed seriously since as a royal family member, she had higher intelligence.
Thinking of all this, the noblewoman lowered her head, "Forgive me, your Highness. I have acted ignorantly."
Aristia clicked her tongue. She wanted to tell the noblewoman to apologise to the server but she couldn’t. She still had to be mindful of etiquette and the rules of this world. But this was enough to humiliate the noble woman.
She turned to the server who had gotten up at some point, "Go and take care of your face."
The server looked at Dahlia for permission and the latter nodded. Then she bowed and left. Dahlia followed behind her.
Aristia sighed. Looking at the server’s pretty face, it was obvious the noblewoman was jealous and intentionally made things difficult for her.
She turned to the noble woman again, "If there is a problem with the staff in this very fine establishment, there are people that you can report to who will take care of the matter. Please, act civilized."
She then looked around at the occupants of the other tables, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
"I really hope this does not repeat again. It won’t be good to see the nobles and aristocrats of Amberale who should be looked up to, disgrace themselves like this. These servers have a responsibility to serve but please refrain from mistreating them. Enduring mistreatment is not a part of their duty and I’m sure his majesty wouldn’t like that for any of his people." She threatened them using Fedor’s name.
Her clean childish voice rang clear and bright in the hall, but it held a subtle coldness that wasn’t very noticeable. All in the room nodded, feeling that it wasn’t just the nobles she was speaking to. They had received the warning.
They felt it was unfortunate for the noble woman that the third princess had arrived at that moment and had decided to intervene. Aristia left, rest assured that this would not happen again.
[Mistreating my workers. And in my presence.] She huffed in her mind. [Even though they have no idea I am the owner, but that does not justify that action.]
"Your Highness, this has happened before. It was another noble woman complaining that what she had ordered was different from what was brought to her. But, the other servers say that it wasn’t actually true." Dahlia revealed once they had left the first floor.
Aristia nodded. "Owen told me."
The nobility was doing it intentionally. They wanted to abuse their power and status over the commoners.
[Like I would let that happen. I have to nip it at the bud.] Aristia huffed. She wouldn’t let them flaunt their power in her own restaurant. That was the second time that had happened. If she let it happen a third time, it would become accepted as a constant practice.
As expected, there would be a lot of gossip about what happened, both among the nobles and the commoners. News spread very fast. She wouldn’t be surprised if at this moment, the news had already left the restaurant.
Aristia knew that her action today would gain her two reputations; the commoners would call her a fighter of Justice and the nobility would call her bratty. Either way she didn’t care.
[From what I’ve learned, Aristia already has a bad reputation. So the commoners calling her a lover of justice will be a bonus and a good thing for her reputation. Then, for the nobility, it will just be like bringing up old knowledge.]
"I do not want the staff to feel uncomfortable working here. Assure them that this will not happen again." She added. "We’ll be leaving now."
"I will do so, your Highness." Dahlia bowed her head.
Aristia turned to Adeline who had been silent the entire time, "Let’s go, Linny."
They left The Vanilla Courtyard and boarded a carriage.
Back at the restaurant, Dahlia smiled. When she heard what happened between the server and the noblewoman, she was both frustrated and angry.
Remembering that the third princess was still in the restaurant, she hurriedly rushed over. She wanted to see how the princess would handle the situation.
The princess didn’t fail her expectations as she not only put the noblewoman in her place, but also provided a warning to all in the hall. They would know better than to disregard her words, and would be mindful of their treatment of the servers.
She went to the workers’ lounge where she saw the girl sitting on one of the couches and another girl pressing a wet towel on her cheeks. There were some other servants there either resting, eating or grabbing something.
"It’s okay, Linda. You should have heard the third princess out there. I was surprised. Mark says this won’t happen again." The girl pressing the towel on Linda’s cheek comforted. She removed the towel and put it back into a bowl she was holding.
The handprint was less glaring, but still very visible.
"I really hope so, Rose." Linda said. "Those aristocrats are too troublesome!" She complained.
"You didn’t hear what the third princess said. They think th— Miss Dahlia!" Rose was saying when she saw Dahlia approach them.
Linda looked over at Dahlia as the latter walked towards her.
"I’m very sorry you had to endure that." Dahlia said. "Rest assured it won’t happen again, thanks to the third princess. You will receive compensation for this."
Dahlia’s assurance left Linda feeling relieved, along with many of the other servers. Compensation or not, none of them wanted to go through the physical and emotional pain those wealthy people brought with them.
"Well, I guess we got the third princess to thank." A boy said jokingly.
’For a change’. He didn’t say that part out loud.
However, all of them had the same thought.
