Chapter 229 - 228 Double Trap
Chapter 229: Chapter 228 Double Trap
Facing Ronald’s inquiry, Raphael simply explained:
"This Array is quite complex in its composition. The person who could come up with such a feat must be an experienced Caster who has dedicated years to study and research."
"And look at how it’s dissipating now."
"This is a very secure defense mechanism, designed so that the Array can self-destruct without leaving any traces, either after its effects end or if it is tampered with."
"If it goes this far, even the investigation bureau’s teams wouldn’t be able to find any trace of his Spell here."
"..."
Listening to Raphael’s explanation, Ronald pondered for a few seconds, then proactively handed over the stone he was holding:
"This was the Core Technique at the center of the Array."
"Can you make anything out of it?"
"..."
Taking the stone from Ronald, Raphael looked at the object and frowned.
He couldn’t immediately recognize its origin.
So he began testing the material and properties of the object, manipulating his own Magic Power and using the methods of his school.
Although the object in hand was the core of an Array,
Raphael was confident in his excellent control abilities and believed he could avoid potential dangers.
However, the next test revealed something that puzzled him.
The ’stone’ in his hand had quite good Magic Power storage properties, and its texture was sturdy enough, but apart from that, there was no trace of any Array-related engraving inside.
In other words...
Was this merely a sufficiently hard Magic Power storage object?
Even though something that could store Magic Power was considered a treasure, it was completely different from what a core of an Array should be!
Standing beside Raphael, Ronald, too, sensed the confusion on his companion’s face.
He immediately asked:
"Raphael, is there something wrong with this thing?"
"Nothing particularly serious," Raphael shook his head, then showed Ronald a puzzled look, "But this object seems to be only capable of storing Magic Power, which is quite different from the core I was expecting."
Ronald immediately pressed further:
"Can you explain in more detail?"
Handing the round stone back to Ronald, Raphael explained:
"Normally, the core of an Array must contain the imprint of a school’s Core Techniques stored inside. This is the fundamental basis for an Array to function properly and is essential to all Spells."
"But what we’re encountering now, not only can the pattern of the Array erase itself, but we also can’t find a trace of the opposing school’s Core Techniques inside the core!"
"This situation is truly..."
Ronald seemed to grasp the meaning behind Raphael’s words and continued:
"So the current situation is like catching a thief who just picked a lock, but then you find he doesn’t have any stolen goods on him, and he even lacks the tools he used for lockpicking?"
"That’s pretty much it." Raphael nodded in agreement with Ronald’s analogy, but then a deep worry appeared on his face, "To my knowledge, there’s no Array in the world today that can operate without its Core Technique."
"Although every school has been trying to cast Spells without sticking strictly to the original incantations, there has never been a successful precedent, unless..."
At that moment, Raphael’s expression changed.
"We have to leave immediately!"
"It might be too late if we wait any longer!"
Giving Ronald an urgent look, Raphael quickly dashed towards the stairs down.
Seeing his companion move so hastily, Ronald swiftly followed suit.
Passing through the first-floor hall, Ronald caught sight again of the maid from earlier. The poor woman, although unconscious, was still tightly bound to a chair by Raphael with strips of cloth, utterly immobilized.
Sensing Ronald’s gaze from behind, Raphael spoke without turning his head:
"If you want to, bring her along. I can take care of it afterward."
Ronald immediately answered,
"No problem."
Saying so, he hoisted the maid up and followed Raphael out of the house.
Passing through the living room and out of the front door, just as Ronald’s legs stepped out of the house,
A realization dawned on him:
——The trial of "Moon Blessing" was complete.
He had truly rescued the afflicted from a place of danger.
If he wished, Ronald could now designate an item to receive the power of the "Moon Blessing" Angel, thereby completing the creation of a potent item.
Meanwhile,
Raphael, who had left the house ahead of Ronald, had already scaled the neighboring wall and called out to him,
"Ronald, over here."
"Let’s hide here for a bit!"
"..."
That seems like somebody else’s house, doesn’t it?
Looking at the wall Raphael stood on, Ronald scanned the surroundings.
Though he didn’t know who the actual residents were, it was clearly a private residence belonging to strangers.
Was he really about to trespass into someone’s home on his second day in Springs?
Ronald felt incredibly conflicted at that moment.
But considering Raphael’s attitude and the current circumstances, he decisively climbed over the wall and followed.
Next, Raphael demonstrated his impressive professional expertise.
Leading Ronald over several walls until they entered a residence that was separated by three estates from the previous one, Raphael spoke up, leaning against the wall:
"Ronald, come over here."
"I’ll clear our traces."
Holding the maid in his arms, Ronald nodded and walked over:
"How will you do that?"
Raphael sported a confident smile:
"Just leave it to me."
Then, as he directed Ronald, he pulled out a small metal bottle and sprayed a clear, colorless liquid on himself and Ronald, visibly relaxing his tense expression after the deed.
"All right, we’re clean now."
"The homeowners are conveniently out. Now we can wait here for Mr. Elva’s performance."
Laying the maid gently on the ground, Ronald then leaned against the wall, peering outside:
"Raphael, why the rush just now?"
"What exactly did you realize?"
Raphael seriously explained:
"That Array was a double trap."
"I haven’t fully figured out the Caster’s mechanism, but after successfully disrupting the Array, the person who constructed it from afar must have received a notification. Staying inside the house definitely would have spelled big trouble!"
Ronald nodded, noncommittal:
"Is that so..."
——Raphael’s prediction was spot-on.
They had only waited for just over a minute when a white-haired scholar accompanied by two solemn associates entered the Elva residence they had left.
