Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength -
Chapter 108: Waiting for Nightfall
Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Waiting for Nightfall
As the remaining two investigators left the church with the prisoner, Ronald stood at the doorway, dazed for a long time before snapping back to reality.
The first thing he did was to check the handgun in his embrace.
Then.
— Uncontrollable beads of cold sweat slid down his back.
In one generation of "Ghost Cry," someone couldn’t double jump;
In "Assassin’s Creed," someone couldn’t swim;
In "Pocket Monsters," there was a deity that couldn’t fly.
Before his transmigration, Ronald possessed a ’superpower’ akin to a natural talent — disastrously inept shooting skills.
Due to his profession, while he traveled far and wide, he naturally came in contact with and learned to use firearms.
And so, the problem arose naturally.
He remembered the grip to hold a firearm by heart, his eyesight was without any issue, and a normal adult’s physique was more than enough to handle conventional firearms.
But perhaps it was the shadow left by some childhood movie, he subconsciously disliked guns.
Once the shooting target exceeded five meters, Ronald’s probability of hitting the target became very low.
— Unless he was using a shotgun.
This was a fact confirmed by various organizations like shooting clubs and ranges.
He just couldn’t control the shooting of firearms well!
So back on Black Mountain, Ronald hadn’t actually lied to Alida.
He was inherently incompatible with firearms.
Rather than fighting with this thing, Ronald would sooner borrow a dung fork from a farmer’s house — at least that thing was long enough...
While Ronald was contemplating with the handgun in his pocket, he heard the voice of the priest from behind him.
"Mr. Ronald?"
"When do you plan on departing?"
Perhaps because of the pressing aura that Willard exuded before, even though the man had left, the priest still sounded tentative when facing Ronald, another investigator.
Hearing the priest’s voice, Ronald turned to look towards the sea.
Just to the west and slightly off-center in the sky, the sun was descending towards the horizon, and the dazzling brightness of day had started to dim.
In another hour or two, it would be dark.
After thinking for a moment, Ronald replied,
"I’ll deal with it after the sunset; it’s more convenient when it’s dark."
"But could you tell me in detail about what happened here?"
"Of course, of course, no problem."
The priest nodded immediately and then pointed to the courtyard behind the church, saying,
"I’ve recorded everything that happened in Celephis according to the regulations, from beginning to end, without omission."
Subsequently, the priest stepped forward to close the church’s main door.
After picking up the book he had been reading earlier from the chair, he led Ronald towards the courtyard at the back.
Passing through the corridor connected to the nave, the two of them arrived at a room on the left side of the rear courtyard.
The door of this room was unlocked, left wide open.
As they entered the doorway, the situation inside was entirely visible.
A book room.
Although limited by the church’s size and unable to store too many books, being not too far from Bolunwei and under headquarters’ support and influence, the bookshelves here were essentially filled with books.
Ronald swept his gaze casually a few times and confirmed the book collection situation here.
Apart from books about the church itself, as well as assorted tomes on geography and botany, even last year’s Bolunwei Chronicles could be found here.
For a small local church, this was already an exceptionally good collection of books.
Of course, anything related to the mystical side was completely absent.
As one of the oldest religious institutions in the world, the church took the collection and dissemination of knowledge very seriously and had put in place excellent protective measures.
While Ronald looked around,
the priest skillfully lit a lamp on a table to the right of the room’s entrance and then walked deeper into the room.
After passing two or three bookshelves, he finally stopped in front of a wall without any books on it.
Ronald cautiously took note of this scene,
Sure enough, it was coming!
The next second, the priest’s actions confirmed his guess.
At a spot on the wall that seemed no different from the rest, he reached out his right hand and pressed down.
Click—
A soft sound followed, and a crack opened in the wall.
Actually, a secret door was hidden in the wall.
The priest pulled it open, revealing a passage leading underground.
People from the mystical side all seem to love burrowing underground...
While pondering this, Ronald followed the priest down.
The staircase leading downwards was not complicated and descended only about three meters before they reached the bottom of the basement.
With the flickering light from the priest’s lamp illuminating the surroundings, Ronald could see that this was a room resembling an archive. Various scrolls and folders were piled up in all corners of the room, and the scent of old paper almost permeated the entire basement.
Of course, apart from the most conspicuous documents and scrolls, there were also a few books here.
On the right side of the room, just after the descent, sparsely placed books lay on a bookshelf against the wall.
"Records of Current Mainstream Schools," "The Rites of Devotion of the Faithful," "Liturgy and Canonical Texts"...
Books like these, just by their titles, one could understand these were truly mystical books.
The kind that would turn ordinary people into "seeds" after reading.
Unlike Ronald, who was looking around from the entrance, the priest, who had lived here for many years, looked completely at ease. He walked to the side, placed the lamp on the desk, and then selected a relatively new file from the folders in front of him.
"Mr. Ronald, this is the record of the recent issues with Selefis. It’s okay if you go over it here, right?"
"I have to record the events of today as well."
Ronald accepted the document and nodded his head,
"Please do as you wish, I’ll just read it through myself."
As his words fell, the priest turned back and sat down at the desk where the lamp was, then took a dip pen and began to record today’s observations on a fresh sheet of paper with great concentration.
This was the role of church personnel...
Or to put it in more general terms, within the borders of Gride, this was the primary duty of church personnel.
Due to the witch hunts of ancient times, church people had developed a systematic ability to monitor those from the mystical side, naturally making them the best watchers to prevent the number of "seeds" from surpassing the threshold.
So, in addition to preaching and using faith to pacify the populace,
Recording the activities of mystical people in an area on a daily basis and submitting them to the authorities was also one of their tasks. At least in preventing the world from turning into something otherworldly, the church people were definitely the mainstay of Gride.
Observing the priest engrossed in his task, the tip of his pen scratching pleasantly ’shasha’ on the paper,
Ronald nodded slightly, then placed his finger on the document in his hand.
According to the investigator who had already left Selefis, his cleanup work tonight was quite simple, something any novice investigator could handle on their own.
But even so,
Ronald still wanted to take a good look at this record, just to be safe.
