Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength
Chapter 106 Leaving the City

Chapter 106: Chapter 106 Leaving the City

Ronald sat in the carriage as they left the city.

Since he did not possess the relevant skills, the person driving above was investigator Nicole.

People from the Investigation Bureau usually did not use carriages.

But this did not mean they would never use them.

In cases of particular urgency, or when the journey was far,

they would rent carriages or use their own transportation.

Ronald and Nicole were in the latter situation.

After the bureau completed preliminary adjustments in the afternoon, everyone was assigned their subsequent tasks.

Nicole’s responsibility was to head to a village outside the city called Seraphis, to assist the investigator already handling matters there complete the mission, and then return together to Blenheim.

Ronald remembered it very clearly.

Previously, when he worked at the reception, Mr. Willard had been taken to this town by two investigators, and had not been seen since.

Now, because of the unusual circumstances in Blenheim, it was possible that summoned personnel would also have to return.

Such matters naturally called for utmost efficiency.

Meeting the two basic requirements of urgency and distance, that was why Nicole would drive a rented carriage out of the city with Ronald.

Traveling by carriage was certainly faster.

From leaving the Investigation Bureau to arriving at Seraphis, the whole process was expected not to exceed two hours.

Amid the sounds of hooves and wheels, the two gradually left Long Beach Street.

Exiting from the southwest direction of Blenheim, they followed a dirt road to the seaside.

As Blenheim gradually faded into the distance behind them, an endless expanse of sea came into view.

Locals called this sea the "Sinking Sun Ocean."

The reason dated back to the ancient ignorant times when the sun always seemed to set over the sea in this direction, and the people who believed the sun was swallowed by the sea got into the habit of naming it thus.

Furthermore, according to what Ronald knew,

among the folk customs of Blenheim, there was an event called ’Night Chase Festival’ held at the city port every spring. The specific content of the festival involved many people setting out to sea to fish and returning before dawn.

The boat that caught the most seafood would receive the champion’s prize of this year’s Night Chase Festival.

The village of Seraphis was settled by a past champion of the festival after their victory.

Clank, clank, clank—

As Ronald gazed thoughtfully at the sea, Nicole knocked on the roof of the carriage and called out loudly from above:

"Ronald, do you see it?"

"We’re almost there."

Ronald looked in the direction of her voice.

Indeed, in the distance, the vague outline of a seaside town was visible.

—That was Seraphis.

From afar, the town drew closer, and Ronald could gradually make out its general condition.

At first glance, it appeared to be an ordinary small town, with a population he estimated to be around a hundred people, a normal size for a village settlement.

Yet, being situated near Blenheim and not having been directly absorbed,

was indeed something to marvel at.

Driving the carriage, Nicole did not see a place near the entrance of the town to park the carriage.

This too, was evidence of Seraphis’s level of backwardness.

If an example were needed, this place and the village Ronald had first crossed into were probably on par in terms of living standards.

Upon further consideration, seeing such a situation so close to a town like Blenheim was somewhat disheartening.

However, the young female investigator seemed unfazed by this.

Driving the carriage, she headed straight for the church settlement in the town.

In just a few minutes, they arrived.

The church of Seraphis matched its surroundings.

A barely acceptable chapel, along with an adjoining rear courtyard and house, made up all the buildings of the church.

"Hey—"

Nicole pulled the carriage to a halt and jumped down directly from the driver’s seat.

She tied the carriage to a wooden stake at the entrance of the church. The investigator girl brushed off her coat, then turned her head to complain to Ronald, who had just left the carriage:

"Ronald, how could you not know how to drive a carriage?"

"When I first became an investigator, I was always the one doing this kind of driving."

"You should take some time to learn it too."

Ronald gave a sheepish smile:

"I definitely will when I get the chance."

Nicole was just vocalizing a complaint; she didn’t really take it to heart.

She nodded, putting the matter behind her, and seeing that there weren’t many people around, she pointed towards the church to introduce it:

"The usual place for monitoring individuals involved with the mystical side is this kind of church."

"If you encounter an emergency situation and can’t handle it, you can also go to find the manager of the church organization in the area."

"..."

After scrutinizing the church, which was based in shades of gray, Ronald hesitated before asking:

"In the books I’ve read before, wasn’t the church in opposition with the mystical side?"

"How long ago was that?"

Nicole waved her hand indifferently while walking towards the nave and said:

"Nowadays, everyone knows each other’s details, and with Her Majesty watching over things, it’s only right to diligently do one’s part. Witch-hunts are things that only exist in historical legends."

As it was a functioning church, the main doors were naturally open.

Without facing any obstruction, Ronald and Nicole entered.

In the end, it was just a small village church, and there were basically no people coming to such a place at this time in the afternoon.

The chairs in the empty nave were neatly arranged, and the surrounding area was cleanly maintained.

Near the back courtyard, a man dressed in a black robe was seated, holding a thick book in his hands.

Hearing Ronald and Nicole enter, he slowly raised his head to glance at them.

"..."

The man seemed momentarily stunned.

Both of the individuals in front of him were dressed in large coats and wide-brimmed hats, typical of investigators when they were on assignment.

His complexion was hesitant and uncertain, but he still promptly stood up and walked over:

"The matter here has been dealt with by someone, hasn’t it?"

"What brings you...?"

Nicole nodded to the priest and directly said:

"We are on a mission to find Mr. Willard."

"Blenheim City is currently in an unusual situation, calling back people to return to the city."

"Huh?"

The priest looked visibly surprised.

He didn’t understand what was happening inside Blenheim City, so he couldn’t figure out the actions of the investigation bureau.

Could it mean...

Was this small town of Celephis, with only a few hundred inhabitants, going to be abandoned?

Arriving at this thought, the priest’s tone became anxious:

"Miss Investigator, I think the situation in Celephis could be reconsidered."

"Although there are not many residents here, everyone is good-natured..."

Nicole cut him off directly, her expression turning very serious:

"Sir, we do not intend to abandon anyone."

"However, at the moment, the situation in Blenheim City is dire, and matters have become urgent."
