Chapter 366: Vikings’ Martial Art

Chapter 366: Vikings’ Martial Art

As Vespera and I tried to come up with an explanation for some of the northerners’ immunity to the devil’s powers, she noticed that the warriors had a thick layer of MP protecting their bodies.

When we asked them about it, they said that they were simply doing the breathing techniques they were taught as children.

"Breathing technique? What do you mean?" I asked.

Bjorn and Magnus went into detail, and they explained that when northerners turned four years old, they were taught how to protect themselves by the warriors from their town.

It was like their own martial arts. However, instead of focusing on their stance, it focused on the use of MP to boost their bodies’ capabilities.

Bjorn and Magnus were already pretty strong, and it was evident by the huge muscles that they had. Still, they were much stronger than they seemed, and it was all thanks to the martial arts they practiced.

I asked them to give me a brief lesson, and they took it pretty seriously, asking me to accompany them to the top floor so that we could go outside The Pit.

"Outside? Can’t you teach me here?" I asked the warriors, but they expressed the importance of doing it in a cold environment.

Vespera, who was also curious to see how the warriors’ magic worked, accompanied us to the top floor, where we opened up the folding staircase and got to the top of the mountain.

It was nighttime, and there was a strong wind blowing in our faces as a snowstorm approached our location. Nonetheless, the warriors said that it was the perfect weather to practice.

I was wearing my poncho, which had an enchantment to keep my body warm, but when I saw the warriors taking off the top part of their armor, I knew it would be my turn next.

Bjorn and Magnus stared at me as if signaling that it was my turn, so I complied and took my poncho and undershirt off.

Honestly, it was extremely cold, and as my body shivered uncontrollably, I hoped that their lesson wouldn’t last long.

"Now, try to copy what we do..." said Bjorn as the two warriors sat on the ground with their legs crossed.

I followed suit and sat in front of them, focusing my eyes on the flow of MP around their bodies.

"Deep breath..." said Magnus.

Their training was more like a meditation session, which was pretty interesting since the warriors believed that the boost in their abilities came from how they breathed.

However, after seeing the flow of MP for a while, I noticed that their breathing had a pattern, which compacted the energy around them and made a coating for their bodies.

Bjorn and Magnus were experienced warriors, so they were always using these breathing techniques, meaning that they always had a thick layer of MP coating their bodies.

Once I was able to match their breathing pattern, I could feel my own body getting coated by the MP, and it made my shivers stop as my body felt warmer.

"I see. This is why you guys don’t get as cold as us..." I muttered.

Ever since I met Bjorn and Magnus, I thought that they simply had a high resistance to the cold temperatures from living here all their lives. However, that wasn’t entirely the case.

The reason that northern warriors could stay in the cold with relatively light clothing was because they were used to breathing in a way that coated their bodies with MP, which slightly protected them from the freezing cold.

"Hmmm, I think we found the reason for your mind-control immunity..." I said.

It was a theory of mine, but I thought that there was a high chance that the same layer of MP coating their bodies was responsible for protecting them against the brainwashing spell of Baelzor.

When we returned to the ninth ring of The Pit, I asked the warriors to stand a few feet away from me, promising that I wouldn’t hurt them.

I cast a very small and weak fireball at the two, and I even made it travel slowly so that we could see the trail of the attack.

As the flame was about to reach their bodies, it deviated to the side before dissipating.

"Aha! It did work," I exclaimed, but the warriors looked a little confused since they didn’t do anything.

I went into more detail and told them the real benefits of the martial arts that they practiced.

Their breathing techniques were made that way on purpose to make the northerners’ bodies resist the cold and boost their physical prowess.

However, it also protected them from weak spells since I could tell that if I shot a fireball at them at full power, it would penetrate the MP layer and hit them.

"This could mean that the brainwashing spell is pretty weak..." said Vespera.

"Exactly. It might be effective, but anyone with a little MP control would be able to resist it," I continued.

All of the warriors in the northern continent were supposed to practice these breathing techniques, so I was still confused about how some of them got mind-controlled when the MP layer should have protected them.

Then, I remembered Helena’s memories and how her husband was breathing heavily before losing control.

’Hmm, panic and fear can make a person’s breathing irregular. The man lost his MP layer for a moment and got brainwashed...’ I thought.

Something similar must have happened to the warrior who was imprisoned at the bottom of The Pit, making me believe that I truly found our answer.

That same night, I sent a voice message to Reinar and Jen, who were already working on a cure for the brainwashing effects of Baelzor’s spell.

Now that we had an idea of where their immunity came from, I thought we could use that to our advantage.

Surprisingly, the two alchemists sent me a response straight away, saying that my findings had given them a great idea to develop the cure.
