My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World
Chapter 364: The Brainwashed Viking

Chapter 364: The Brainwashed Viking

When Rio and Lampart showed me all the way down to the tenth ring of The Pit, we arrived at the area they were using as a prison.

Surprisingly, there was only one prisoner chained to the wall, while the rest of the floor was entirely empty.

The man, who shared the features of the Viking warriors, raised his gaze and instantly tried to rush towards us with a deranged expression but was promptly stopped by the chains around his wrists.

It was pretty strange for me since it looked like the man’s eyes were completely devoid of emotions while the rest of his body acted differently.

I could tell that his eyes looked the same as the brainwashed soldiers we saw at the settlement. Still, there was something I had noticed that was somewhat bothering me.

All of the warriors who were at The Pit getting ready to fight had a similar body build to Bjorn and Magnus—tall, strong, bearded Vikings.

However, the soldiers we saw at the settlement weren’t as beefy as these guys.

At first, I thought that the difference in muscle mass somehow made them resist the mind-control spell, but that idea was refuted when I witnessed Helena’s memories.

Her husband, who ran all the way to his home to tell his family about Baelzor, looked just as tall and robust as the rest of the Vikings in The Pit, so I knew that their body build had nothing to do with their ability to resist the spell.

Now that I was looking at the second brainwashed Viking, I could confirm it. Nevertheless, it made me wonder even harder about the reason the others weren’t affected by it.

Bjorn and Magnus were sold as slaves to Guanghua since they couldn’t be controlled, so I thought that we could get some answers from them if they joined us.

After I asked Vespera to go to the top floor to fetch them, I gazed back at the chained Viking, who was still trying to get the chains of his wrists in a crazed manner.

I cast gravity magic to make the man halt his movements and started to slowly approach him, making him grunt as he struggled to move his arms.

’I wonder if this will work...’ I thought as I opened my void pocket and pulled out a holy panacea.

Usually, the panacea was able to heal almost anything, and while their brainwashing wasn’t exactly an illness, I thought there was no harm in trying.

I had to ask both Rio and Lampart for help in making the man swallow the potion, so we held his face up and almost drowned him with the panacea.

Still, after he swallowed and coughed, I noticed the glint in his eyes returned for a brief moment as his body relaxed, not trying to attack us anymore. Nevertheless, it only lasted for a few seconds.

Once his eyes returned to their opaque color, the man started yelling and grunting maniacally, flailing his hands as if he were trying his best to break the chains from the walls.

"Hmmm, that did something for a moment there..." I pondered aloud, placing a hand on my chin and staring at the brainwashed Viking attentively.

At that moment, Bjorn and Magnus arrived at the prison, and they looked quite disgruntled at the sight of the man.

"Oh, brother..." Bjorn said with a sad tone.

"You know this man?" I asked the two warriors.

"Not personally, no. That doesn’t mean he is not our brother..." he replied.

Magnus explained that there were two kinds of northerners: The "true" and the "new."

The "true northerners" were the taller and stronger-looking people who resembled Vikings the most.

The "new northerners" were the people who had more "normal body proportions." Basically, normal humans like me.

Still, even though the people in the North had different labels for each other, that didn’t mean that they had a bad relationship.

The true northerners were the ones who lived in the north until more humans decided to move.

At first, there was a war between the true and the new, but eventually, one man managed to unite the two, and they have been living as one country ever since.

These were events that had happened hundreds of years ago, but even then, the true northerners always referred to each other as "brothers."

Their explanation was a bit more than what I asked for, but it made me wonder if people with the "true northerner" genes were somehow able to resist the effect of demonic energy more effectively than other humans.

"How did you guys not get mind-controlled like this man?" I asked the warriors.

"Hmm, I can’t say I know for sure. But they did try!" Bjorn replied.

"They tried to brainwash you? And what happened?" I continued.

Magnus told me the full story of when the two of them got captured and said that a monster with obsidian skin pointed their palms at them before casting a spell. However, the monster seemed frustrated right after and ordered them to be sold as slaves.

"A monster with obsidian skin?" I pondered aloud.

"Magnus, can I take a look for myself?" I asked the warrior, wanting to look at his memories so that I could confirm my suspicions.

The warrior agreed, and when I placed my hand on his forehead, I was brought to the moment they were cuffed and captured by the mind-controlled army of Baelzor.

The obsidian monster that Magnus talked about turned out to be a Black Demon, and we had encountered a few of them at this point, so I was pretty sure that’s what it was.

Black Demons were just another version of Greater Demons, but there was something about this individual that was a little familiar.

Then it clicked. It was one of the demons that Vespera beat up in the Lunar Forest when we encountered Drakzen and Salamandra.

By the end of that fight, Drakzen escaped with the two demons, but I could tell that Magnus’ memories had happened before our encounter in the forest.

’So, Baelzor can have other demons do the mind-controlling for him...’ I thought as I retracted my hand from the warrior’s head, bringing me back to reality.
