Chapter 360: Drakzen’s Motives

While Yoru and the black lion man kept fighting each other and destroying what was left of the small town, I used my "search" spell to look for survivors.

At first, we thought that everyone in town had been killed or kidnapped by the soldiers, but after the beast said something about "hiding the people," I started to think that wasn’t the case.

My spell was telling me that there was a large group of people right in our location, but there was nobody around, so I deduced that they must have been hiding underground.

Underground spaces were pretty common in the northern continent since they helped people stay warm during their excruciatingly cold winters. Still, I couldn’t find any secret entrance or passage that led me there.

As my group and I were looking for the entrance to the underground room, we were interrupted by the black lion, who started to generate an excessive amount of black lightning bolts around his body that burnt and desecrated everything they touched.

The black lightning was shooting all over the place, but they were still somewhat easy to avoid as we could follow the trail before they hit us.

Still, their destructive power was pretty scary, as the rocky buildings would implode by the simple graze of the black electricity.

In the midst of the black lion’s fit of rage, I saw Yoru launching himself at the beast and deflecting a black lightning bolt to the side using his forearm.

When he got closer, Yoru was struck by the attack, but his body endured the pain as he placed both of his hands on the lion’s face, producing an explosion with moon magic that vaporized the head of the beast, leaving only a limp body to fall to the ground.

Yoru was falling along with the black lion’s corpse, but I caught him before he hit the ground and doused his body with a healing potion.

When his form changed back to that of a moonwolf, I let out a sigh of relief that was just a few seconds too early, as we could feel an overwhelming torrent of demonic energy coming our way.

"Dammit. Everyone, scatter!" I shouted at my group.

We couldn’t use another invisibility potion, and even if we hid inside the destroyed homes, a devil would easily be able to sniff us out.

"Bahaha! Scatter where?" said a familiar and annoying voice behind me.

"Drakzen..." I muttered, letting out a sigh of pure irritation.

I was still holding Yoru in my arms, so I was pretty exposed to an attack from the devil. However, Fuego and Vespera stood between us and glared at Drakzen attentively.

"I thought I felt something strange. Is it really okay for you to be here?" the devil said to Fuego after chuckling to himself.

Drakzen was aware that the Lava Dragon only cared about protecting his egg, so he was acting confused as to why he was there with us.

"I gotta say, Ichiro. That’s impressive..." Drakzen continued, switching his gaze towards me.

"It was pretty obvious you would come here, but I never expected you would tame the Lava Dragon," he said with a smirk.

"Let me ask you something, Drakzen. Were you the one who created those pink goblins at Lotus?" I asked, keeping a serious and unbothered expression.

Drakzen chuckled, explaining that he "simply used Nexa’s blood" to create a new type of monster. However, he attributed it to being a personal experiment of his.

It’s not like Drakzen was being forced to do any of that—his past time was producing new species of Accursed Beasts and watching them destroy entire towns.

"Why...?" I muttered.

"Hmm?" The devil hummed as if asking me to elaborate.

"Why are you so focused on destroying everything? It’s clear that not all devils think the same as you. So, why?" I asked.

In a strange way, I was interested in knowing Drakzen’s train of thought.

The fact that Jackson and Nessa could think for themselves and realize that all they truly wanted was a peaceful life made me believe that other devils might have felt the same way.

"Why... Hah... Hahahaha!" Drakzen laughed, although it didn’t sound genuine.

"Have you ever heard of the demon realm, Ichiro?" he asked back.

"Somewhat. I heard it was overpopulated—that’s why you are here, right?" I replied.

"Exactly, then why... WHY must we put up with that hell while you people don’t even bring the full potential of this vast world!?" Drakzen shouted, his voice sounding a bit more deranged than ever.

"All you people do is live for yourselves with the excuse that it’s the best for everyone. Did you think murder and slavery wouldn’t exist without us here!? Huh, Ichiro!?" he continued.

"Splitting your territories? Splitting your people? High-ranking nobles having better lives than others when they haven’t accomplished anything in their lifetime? You may not see it, but you are all the same as the devils in our realm..."

When I spoke with Jackson about the demon realm a few years ago, he told me that the reason they were sent to invade this world was because their demon king had been left without a territory of his own.

In their realm, there were various demon kings who held different territories under their reign, and they were at constant war with each other, as all the demon kings wanted to rule over all of hell.

"I’ll unite this world under one rule. That’s how you bring true peace..." said Drakzen, finishing his speech and rushing to the side of the black lion’s corpse.

My group and I watched attentively, expecting him to cast some sort of surprise attack on us. However, all he did was take out a small vial from the pocket in his robe.

When I noticed it was the same black vial he used to absorb Minotaur’s body in Guanghua, my eyes widened, and I tried to rush towards him to stop him. Nonetheless, it was useless.

Right when he opened the cork of the obsidian vial, the black lightning lion’s corpse started to get shredded as all of its blood was extracted, floating inside the vial until the corpse was turned to dust.
