Chapter 355: The Dragon’s Labyrinth
Chapter 355: The Dragon’s Labyrinth
After checking half of the cave entrances that my team found, we carried the warriors to the area that was inaccessible on foot, where the entrance I found was.
We made our way inside, and we deduced it was the correct path since it had been over five minutes without us being cut off from advancing.
There was a warm breeze that enveloped the inside of the cave every few seconds, which would have felt nice if it weren’t for the overwhelming energy that we had to withstand.
Magnus and Bjorn were having a bit of trouble with their breathing for each second that we kept moving, so Vespera and I covered them with a thick layer of our own MP to help them resist the threatening dragon’s aura.
At one point, the narrow cave opened up to a much taller room and a wall splitting two separate ways.
The two pathways looked the same, but they went in opposite directions, so we weren’t sure where to start.
"The labyrinth..." muttered Vespera as we pondered which road to take.
The walls reached the top of the cave, so I wasn’t able to levitate and look ahead for the correct path, which meant that we would have to check every road until we got to the end.
We started with the left entrance, which took us quite deep into the labyrinth for two hours before every road turned into a dead-end, making us go back to the beginning.
The second half took us longer to explore, but we managed to reach the end after three hours of walking around aimlessly.
However, after going through the exit into the next room, it was another labyrinth, except this time, there were three entrances at the beginning.
*sigh* "This is going to take a while..." I uttered with annoyance.
In the end, it took us an extra six hours to complete the second half of the labyrinth, but I didn’t get my hopes up when we finished as I suspected that another one was coming.
"Welp... I was right," I said when we got to the third labyrinth room, which had four entrances.
It was about time for us to get some rest, but we couldn’t really stay there for an entire night since we were using our MP to protect Magnus and Bjorn.
If we went to sleep, the protection would shut down, and the dragon’s aura would have overwhelmed their bodies. So, we decided to keep advancing and worry about resting later.
After eight hours, we managed to reach the real end of the labyrinth, and my team and I were sick of wandering around the obsidian cave.
There was no exit at the end. Instead, it was a large, circular platform with a lever on one side, which I could deduce was some sort of elevator.
The handle of the lever was scalding hot, so I had to use magic to be able to grab it without scorching my hand. After pushing it to the side, the platform turned slightly and began moving downwards.
The deeper the elevator took us, the more dense the dragon’s energy was, and when we reached the bottom, we found ourselves inside a large and spacious room.
There were lava waterfalls on the side that illuminated the surroundings, and the ground had cracks that glowed red from the heat of the place.
At the back of the room, a massive obsidian dragon lay with its eyes closed, using its body to cover what looked like a red, scaly egg.
For every breath that the dragon took, a wave of warm air enveloped us and traveled through the entire cave.
’That warm breeze we could feel from the entrance was the dragon’s breath...’ I thought, utterly impressed.
While we perplexedly admired the beast, one of its eyes opened and glanced at us, making it stand up from its position and showcasing its massive size to us.
The Lava Dragon was bigger than Arashi in her dragon form, and honestly, the fact we were hundreds of meters deep inside a cave made the encounter a bit more frightening.
"Who enters my lair?" said a deep voice that echoed loudly in the room.
"I’m Ichiro. We are here to help," I replied, but my answer made the Lava Dragon extrude even more of his energy.
"Leave!" the dragon said, which annoyed me.
We had spent a long time going through the labyrinth to help, so I was not going to leave without even talking to the dragon for a bit longer.
The main reason we were there was because Garon asked us, or we wouldn’t have bothered the beast otherwise.
Vespera took a few steps forward and stared at the dragon in the eyes, and as they exchanged glances with each other for a few seconds, the beast’s energy slowly went back down.
"What did you do?" I asked my companion, low enough so that only she would hear me.
"I told him the reason we are here. You probably should’ve started with that..." she replied.
"You’ve grown strong, spider..." said the dragon in his deep voice.
"I go by Vespera nowadays. I see that you are still just as powerful..." my companion replied.
It was one of the rare few times that Vespera praised someone other than me or herself, so I could tell that she genuinely respected the Lava Dragon.
"Now that we are all on the same page, can we talk for a bit without having your aura trying to squish us?" I asked the dragon, who lowered the output of his energy, making the environment more bearable to the warriors and Gina.
Suddenly, the lava that was falling from the side of the room started to shoot out horizontally, covering the dragon in a massive dome of fire that slowly shinked until it disappeared.
From the center of the lava orb, a tall man with orange eyes and long, dark hair stood still.
His skin was slightly grey, and the fiery energy that covered his body made it seem like lava was running inside of him.
’Alright. Now we can talk...’
