Chapter 354: Black Ice Pinnacle
Chapter 354: Black Ice Pinnacle
After getting a quick visit from Garon, the God of Beasts, he asked us for a favor in helping out the Lava Dragon.
At first, we thought about entirely skipping Black Ice Pinnacle since the dragon was generating an energy that felt pretty threatening, even when we were still a few hundred kilometers away.
However, knowing that the beast was doing it to protect an egg from devils made me change my mind a little.
We had to fly pretty high up in the air so that the snowstorm that was falling on the glacial zone wouldn’t hit us as hard as it was, and a few hours later, we were out of the frozen ground area.
The earth leading to Black Ice Pinnacle was dark, and it only got darker the closer we got to the mountain, where every rock and grain of dirt was a deep, obsidian color.
The dragon’s energy was pretty overwhelming, but we still advanced confidently, knowing that the threat wasn’t directly aiming at us.
"Is the dragon at the peak?" I wondered out loud.
Arashi, the Storm Dragon, had her lair at the very top of Rose Peak, so it wouldn’t be strange if the other dragons were similar.
However, Vespera refuted my claim, saying that the Lava Dragon wouldn’t make his lair somewhere so high up. Instead, we had to look for a cave entrance that would lead us inside the mountain.
When we reached the foot of the mountain, we noticed that it was almost impossible to climb, at least not without magic.
The stones were jagged and pointy, and there didn’t seem to be any hiking paths. It was as if a black wall of rocky spikes divided the glacial zone from the mainland of the north.
Still, even if we had to cross it, it wouldn’t have been a problem since we could simply fly over it.
My companions and I were constantly using our "search" spell to make sure that no other monsters were getting close to us, and it seemed like the dragon’s energy scared away any potential enemy since we didn’t feel a single thing near us.
The temperature around Black Ice Pinnacle was much warmer than anywhere else on the northern continent, but that was a side effect of the dragon’s threat that covered the area.
Even if people wanted to live close to the mountain for warmth, they wouldn’t be able to handle the overwhelming energy that came out of it for too long.
Since there weren’t any of the devils’ lackeys around us, we thought it would be best for us to split up and look for the cave entrance.
"Let’s meet up on this spot in two hours..." I said to my group before we all went different ways.
It took me around thirty minutes to find an entrance that could only be accessed by flying up to a small area on the side of the mountain, and thinking that I completed the job, I returned to the spot to wait for the rest of my team.
However, all of them had also found an entrance to a cave, so we had six different entries to check.
"Maybe they all lead to the same place?" Gina pondered aloud.
"Hmm, I doubt it. The dragon probably has all those entrances to confuse his enemies..." Vespera replied.
"Okay, you know this dragon, right, Vesp?" I asked my companion, who seemed to talk about the Lava Dragon with a bit of familiarity.
"Somewhat. I only saw him one time, and I wasn’t even a Legendary Beast when I did..." she said.
The Lava Dragon was one of the oldest and most ancient beings in the world, next to Acalan, the Phoenix.
I remembered that Acalan was over 1,200 years old, and he lived around the time that Alejandro arrived in this world when it was still quite primitive.
"Legends say that a phoenix and a dragon were born on the same day. It doesn’t specify which dragon, but I think it’s easy to tell nowadays..." said Vespera.
"While the phoenix lived all over the world, the dragon built a labyrinth for himself, wanting to stay away from the affairs of the people," she continued.
"So, the Lava Dragon and Acalan are kind of like brothers...?" I pondered.
’Well, if we could talk Acalan into being our ally, surely we can do the same with the Lava Dragon...’ I thought.
Still, Vespera said that their personalities were wholly different from each other, which was why they never got along.
"If these caves lead us to the dragon’s labyrinth, we might spend a long time in there trying to get to the end..." my companion elaborated.
Nevertheless, we had our "search" magic and Yoru’s smell, so we had a bit of an advantage if we tackled the labyrinth.
"Well, I suppose we’ll have to check each of the cave entrances. Let’s start with the closest one from here..." I said.
The first entrance was found by Bjorn, and it was only five minutes of walking from our position. However, it didn’t take long for us to reach the end, which led to a precipice with a lava pool at the bottom.
"Alright, this one isn’t it..." I muttered as we turned around to leave our first tunnel.
The second and third cave tunnels we tried were more of the same, with one leading to a spike trap and the other one leading to a wall of lava that flowed through the insides of the obsidian mountain.
The entrance I found was the only one that was inaccessible on foot, and my intuition was telling me that it must have been the right path to take.
’If the cave I found was a trap, then I don’t think the dragon would have bothered in putting it in such a difficult place to reach...’ I thought.
All of the caves that my team found were pretty easy to get to, as they would mainly require them to jump a few rocks to reach them, so it was clear that the more exposed the entrance was, the higher the chance of it being a trap.
