Chapter 348: The Underwater Mystery
Chapter 348: The Underwater Mystery
The following day, after returning to the capital of Lotus, Melina and I had to split up since people needed our help in the north, but we also couldn’t leave the final relic alone.
I was taking Vespera, Yoru, and Gina with me—we were going to need to be a bit stealthy when moving around the Northern Empire, so I was a bit puzzled about what to do with Athena.
However, the bear didn’t want to separate from her cub, and since Apollo was going with Melina’s group, I told the mom to go with them and offer her support.
Melina’s group had Arashi, Carli, Nessa, Athena, and the cub Apollo, which made me feel pretty relieved as I knew they would protect Melina with all of their strength.
Before we said our goodbyes to the king, I put a bit of a good word for our friend Keiko, saying that our quest wouldn’t have been possible without her.
Technically, it was true—she made it much easier for us to look for the relic in her nation.
I mean, if we didn’t know her, we would have probably found a way to get it either way, but it felt much better to have allies that were willing to help us.
After we gave our farewells, I gave Melina a goodbye kiss and used the magic quartz to send me to the location where Bjorn and Magnus were.
The warriors from the north were, somehow, still on a boat on their way to the Northern Empire after they left Guanghua the same day as us.
To be fair, they were pretty close to reaching the shore after a few days on the sea, and it was only the two of them manning the boat.
They knew I was coming that day, so they placed the magic quartz in the middle of their boat, and when I appeared with my companions, we got a bit startled as the ship started to rock from side to side.
"What the-...? I remember this boat being a bit bigger..." I said aloud.
Yoru instantly jumped inside my shadow since it was a bit hard to keep our balance at first while I firmly planted my feet on the ground.
"Ichiro, you made it!" said Bjorn with open arms and a smile.
"Yeah, but guys. What the hell is this boat!?" I asked, still perplexed at the small vessel we found ourselves in.
When they left Guanghua, I remember they were given a boat that could easily fit a crew of eight people. It had a cabin to sleep in, a bathroom, and a sail to make their trip easier.
However, the boat they had now had none of that, as it resembled a long canoe with a few wooden slabs in between to sit on.
"Well, we had a bit of an altercation and had to use the emergency boat..." Bjorn explained.
Apparently, a monster came out of the water one afternoon and destroyed their boat, so they had been rowing the canoe for a few days.
"A monster? Did you see it?" I asked, getting a bit curious about this sea monster that could destroy a ship so easily.
"We didn’t see anything. I still don’t think it was a monster..." Magnus interjected.
The warrior explained that their boat suddenly blew up, and as he inspected the pattern of the attack, he said that it seemed as if a cannon had shot their boat from the bottom.
"Hmmm, interesting..." I muttered.
Seeing that the boat was struggling to keep straight, Vespera and I started floating above the vessel while Gina stayed in the seat, helping the two warriors row to the north.
Vespera noticed that I was still curious to see what had attacked the two warriors, so we told them that we were going to check out the ocean and come back.
We flew at the highest speeds we could to the south for about twenty minutes before we decided to coat our bodies with water and wind magic, creating an air sphere around us that allowed us to dive in the water while still being able to breathe comfortably.
The day was sunny and bright, so we had pretty good visibility underwater. Still, we used our "search" spell to look for anything suspicious.
I saw a few sharks and fish banks swimming by, but there was nothing dangerous enough to destroy a whole boat with one attack.
Using light magic to create a large mote of light, I dropped it and waited for it to go deep into the water and illuminate the bottom for us.
I was staring at the light sinking down slowly for some time when suddenly, it stopped.
’Huh? There is no way that’s the bottom of the sea...’ I thought.
I was expecting to watch the light mote go down for a while until the darkness of the deep ocean shrouded it, but it ended up stopping a few hundred meters below, which wasn’t much.
Vespera and I decided to go deeper to see what it was, as our "search" spell didn’t see any monsters around, so we felt like it was somewhat safe to get closer.
["Is that... an island?"] I said to my companion telepathically.
It was pretty dark, and we weren’t able to detail our surroundings very well, so I used another light magic spell that would keep producing light around my air sphere.
When we finally got a better look, Vespera and I were pretty shocked at the sight.
Right below us, extending to all of our directions, a massive obsidian rock island was sunk at the bottom of the sea.
It was like looking at a massive mountain, and we could see small underwater volcanoes in some of its rocks, releasing torrents of hot water into the deep ocean.
Honestly, I had gone scuba-diving with my wife in our past life, and don’t get me wrong, our experience was great. Still, I couldn’t help but feel like this was the most incredible thing I had seen underwater.
