Chapter 340: The Path to Rose Peak
After the momma bear and her cub were done eating the food that we gave them, we were able to approach them and pet them.
Melina and Yoru were playing with the cub, who liked rolling around like a panda, while Vespera and I were checking on the momma bear.
Vespera and Yoru were able to communicate with them via telepathy, so she was the one who told me that the bear was grateful to us for our help.
Using Vespera as my translator, I asked the momma bear if it was normal for a Chimera to be in that area, but the bear said that it was the first time she had encountered such a monster.
Apparently, more monsters started to appear in the fields of Lotus a few years ago, and lots of animals and beasts had to migrate to other zones so they wouldn’t get eradicated by these monsters.
The bear had no real way to tell time, so I had to do an estimate, and it seemed like the monsters started to appear during the times that we fought Armaros.
My theory was that Drakzen was creating monsters in End Forest, and after he realized it was useless since we were hunting them all down, he switched places and came to the fields in Lotus.
The bear then asked us why we were there, so we told her that we were going to Rose Peak to look for a relic, and she warned us about the dragon that was guarding it.
Dragons were Legendary Beasts like Vespera, so I believed that we would be able to talk to them peacefully without any violence. Still, the bear was adamant about us being careful around the beast, and it seemed wise to listen to her.
We had a few hours before the sunset, and before we could fly away, the bear told us that she would take us to a good spot for resting.
Taking her offer, we walked along with the momma bear and her cub, who was sitting on her back as we leisurely walked on the beautiful fields of Lotus.
The bear told us that there were two ways to reach the top of Rose Peak. One was flying from the outside, and the other was going through the cave that went up.
If we were traveling without the bears, we probably would have gone straight to the peak from the outside, but whatever she wanted to show us was inside these tunnels.
It took us a few hours to reach the base of a rocky mountain, which was considered part of Rose Peak, even though it was still quite far from it.
The terrain seemed to be split by the rocks, so we had to go through a short cave tunnel to reach the other side.
After going through it, the area in front of us looked pretty different from the fields we had just passed, as it resembled a valley surrounded by dark purple-looking mountains, with the highest peak visible from the distance.
Moreover, the temperature in that valley was much colder than before.
I didn’t have a thermostat to show me the actual temperature, but I guessed it was around 2-3 C°, which wasn’t super cold, but it was still chilly.
Nonetheless, we had our enchanted clothing, so we didn’t really feel the change in temperature unless we took it off.
Nighttime had fallen upon us as we walked along the mountain line, and we were looking for a spot to build a shack and rest for the night, but the bear told us that we were close to the area she wanted to show us.
At one point, we walked up along the mountain range for a little until we were on a narrow path that was pretty high up from the ground, leading us to a broad stone plateau that was perfect for camping.
In the flat, rocky area, there were a few holes with trails of steam coming out of them, which made me wonder if the Rose Peak was some sort of active volcano.
The bear said that we should continue traveling to the peak using the rocky path we were on, as there were different plateaus situated on different levels of the mountain.
I asked the bear why she believed that was the best choice for us when we could simply fly all the way there, and she confessed that some plateaus had "hot water puddles" that could improve a person’s MP level.
’Hot water puddles? Does she mean a hot spring?’ I pondered.
I couldn’t be too sure that’s what the bear meant, but she said that it could improve someone’s MP level permanently, so we thought that it wouldn’t hurt to check it out.
Still, we were done traveling for that day, so we used earth magic to make a small house for us before having dinner with the bears as our guests.
For some reason, the stone we used was a bit hot, which was nice because it made our house nice and warm on the inside, while the temperature outside fell a little below 0 degrees.
"I wonder what’s creating all this heat..." I said aloud.
"Maybe the mountain is a volcano," Melina replied, inquisitively placing a hand on her chin.
"I thought the same. But this mountain range doesn’t really have the shape of a volcano..." I continued.
Volcanoes could have some hills around them and stuff, but this was a mountain range that split into all directions, and all of them led to the peak, which looked too sharp to be the top of an active volcano.
"Well, if all the paths lead to the peak of the mountain, that’s probably where we’ll find the answer..." said Melina as she lay on the bed that Vespera made for us.
*sigh* "You are probably right..." I followed up, lying next to her.
"What do you think about the bears?" I continued.
"I love ’em. They are so cute!" she replied with a smile.
To be fair, they were pretty cute, and now that they were traveling with us, I thought we should come up with a name for them.
’I’ll think about that later...’ I thought before falling asleep.
