Chapter 339: Chimera Vs. Infernal Bear

After leaving Nessa and the battle-maids at the castle in Lotus capital, I and the rest of the group kept making our way towards Rose Peak.

We could have made it all the way to the mountain in a few hours if we had flown as fast as we could, but we didn’t want to miss any dangerous monster on the ground.

During the three days that I spent unconscious, Melina went to the guild to turn in our quest of hunting down the pink goblins, and given that we had destroyed their entire village, we were paid a little over 500 gold for it.

Melina told me that after she tried picking up another job, she didn’t find any that were high-ranking. However, the clerk at the guild urged her to be careful, as there were reports of unknown monsters in the area.

After a few hours of flying north, the temperature started to get colder.

Our clothing was enchanted so that it would keep our bodies at a perfect temperature at all times, so I couldn’t really feel any difference in the weather unless I stuck my arms out of my poncho.

Suddenly, we heard the loud roar of a beast, which caught our attention since it sounded pretty desperate.

As we flew to the area where the roar came from, we also heard the sound of an explosion that knocked down a few trees in the distance.

When we got there, we were a little shocked at the scene we found.

A massive red bear was fighting some sort of ugly beast that had the body of a lion, the horns of a ram, and the tail of a snake’s head.

The red bear was hurt and stumbling weakly to the sides, which was the poison having its effect on it.

However, when we saw that there was a baby bear that was hiding behind some trees, we understood that this was a mother protecting their children.

The chimera started spewing fire at the bear, but a fire barrier appeared around it and deflected the flames to the sides.

’Is that bear casting fire magic?’ I pondered before casting "inspect" on it.

’Alright, that’s not much information...’ I thought.

I wasn’t planning on eating the bear, but it was good to know that its meat wasn’t good for it anyway.

"Ichi..." Melina muttered, but I already knew what she wanted to say.

"Yeah, let’s go help those bears," I replied.

The chimera was breathing fire at the bear, who kept the barrier up to protect itself from the attack until I landed feet first on the chimera’s lion head, kicking it down with force and making it stop its relentless attack.

At that moment, the snake head on its back tried to attack me, but Vespera appeared from one side and used her spider legs to smack it sideways.

My companion wanted to decapitate the snake’s head, but her attack was only enough to leave a cut on its face.

"This thing has tough skin..." Vespera commented as we both stepped away from the chimera for a moment, leaving an opening for Melina, who shot a thunderbolt from the sky down on the monster.

Even though the chimera had its entire body scorched by the lightning, the snake’s head opened its mouth and started producing a toxic gas that covered the area around it.

Nonetheless, I could tell it was a desperate attempt, so I clapped my hands using wind magic and blew away the gas before it could reach me and the bear, who was staring at us with suspicion.

Vespera was immune to the poisonous gas, so she simply jumped into the dark purple cloud, and three seconds later, it dispersed, showing Vespera holding the lion’s head in her hand.

Honestly, the chimera would have been a bigger problem if it was just me. But having Melina and two Legendary Beasts made me feel like we couldn’t lose to anyone at the moment.

Yoru didn’t even show himself during the encounter, as he knew perfectly well that he wasn’t needed.

I turned to look at the bear, and it took a step back with wariness, letting out a few grunts of pain from the poison that coursed through its body.

Since I didn’t want to scare the bear off, I stayed a few feet away from it and opened my void pocket, pulling out a holy panacea and some food for the bear and her cub.

When I placed the food and the potion on the ground, the momma bear carefully sniffed it. However, her wariness seemed to be all for naught since the cute bear cub came running out from its hiding spot to grab a few pieces of fruit.

Again, the momma bear looked a little stressed at first, but after she noticed that we weren’t touching the cub and just allowed him to eat to his heart’s content, the momma bear relaxed and lay on the ground.

Her breathing got louder and faster, which was the poison doing its thing.

Vespera told me that the poison from a Chimera was some of the most potent ones in the world, saying that even though she was immune to all poisons, it still hurt her when she jumped into the toxic cloud.

Seeing that the momma bear was no longer on guard, we approached her and started feeding her the holy panacea while Melina doused some of her wounds with a healing potion.

The holy panacea would have probably been enough to heal the bear fully, but we wanted to make sure that she was in top shape after our treatment.

I thought the bear would go to sleep right after being healed since these kinds of treatments usually took a lot of stamina from the individual.

However, after all of her wounds were closed, and the poison was cleansed from her body, the momma bear sat down in a somewhat cute manner with her bottom legs spread on the ground.

Then, she used her claws to pinch some of the fruit we got for her and started eating piece by piece.

"This is a very polite bear..." I muttered, not able to hide a smile, as I found it kind of funny.
