Chapter 316: Squadrons

It had been four days since we returned from the capital, and the settlement of Yuandu kept growing even more.

With the Guanghua soldiers being called back to the capital to protect it, the small towns around us became easy targets to free the enslaved villagers in them.

Now that we had the two Yushan lords, the food supply of the nobles was dwindling, and it was only a matter of time until they started opposing the empress or escaping the city.

Jackson was worried that Vyrazul would start killing the commoners in the outskirts to draw us out of our hiding spot in Yuandu, but I knew that it wouldn’t be that easy for her.

Vyrazul could order her soldiers to start executing the commoners in the outskirts without remorse, sure, but not every soldier would follow those orders without a second thought.

Moreover, it would only increase the apathy of the nobles towards her, and I knew that Vyrazul was smarter than that.

After a whole week passed, our settlement had different squadrons of people who were willing to fight against the devil and her forces.

Two of those groups were being led by Bjorn and Magnus, the two northern warriors, who were also training some soldiers and villagers who wanted to join the fight.

Carli and Gina were also in charge of two more groups, along with Karla, who was leading her own small squad.

The only one we couldn’t add to our plans was Jackson, not because he couldn’t fight but because he had a demonic vow with Vyrazul where he couldn’t interfere with her business.

Nonetheless, he was still going to accompany us as he said that there were loopholes he could take advantage of.

During our first day after we returned from the capital, I witnessed the reunion of Nessa and Jackson.

Nessa looked up to him ever since they were still devils working for their demon king, which was why his way of thinking had stuck with her. Their relationship looked like that of a tutor and his pupil.

She wanted to lead her own team in the capital, which I thought was a bit risky at first, but her determination convinced me otherwise.

I had never seen two devils fighting each other, but I knew that Drakzen had the power to manipulate their demonic energy in some ways. Similar to the time when Nessa was in the world tournament, and he raised her energy to mess with her disguise.

We also had half of the Dawn’s Defenders with us, so Nisa and Tony would be leading them during the final encounter.

Knowing that the former empress was alive was a massive shock to all of the Guanghua citizens in Yuandu, and their admiration for her gave me another idea to speed up the revolution.

It was clear that Empress Chunhua was loved by the people, so if we spread the word about her being alive and healthy, then more citizens would be willing to fight back against Vyrazul’s rule.

Using my "picture magic," I took a photo of the empress and printed it on a bunch of papyrus. Then, we gave them to a small group of the Dawn’s Defenders, who would travel to different towns and spread the papers.

The first prince, Renjun, told me that he also wanted to participate, and while I would have preferred he stayed out of trouble, he kept saying how it was his duty to fight for his people, so I couldn’t deny him.

I sent Vespera to place a magic quartz close to the capital since we had to take them all with us, or we would have left an open door for the devil to get to us.

Lord Bao told us about the capital’s defenses against other armies and explained that they had catapults at the top of the wall that needed to be taken down before any group could advance.

It reminded me of when we attacked the Kalusia capital, but that time, we had the knights from Sephyr helping us since they could fly.

’That’s gonna have to be our first job...’ I thought.

Once Vespera had placed the magic quartz in an area that was close enough for us to teleport our army without getting spotted, she returned to Yuandu, and I asked her to stay at the settlement.

At first, she was hesitant to be the one staying, saying that she also wanted to fight. However, when I explained that she was the only one who could protect everyone there and also teleport to us the fastest, she waved her hair back and puffed her chest out with confidence.

We knew that our squadrons were already engaging the guards in other towns, and not wanting to slow down our momentum, we started teleporting our army to the field that led to the capital.

The capital city was shaped like a circle, and the areas around the wall were the commoners’ areas.

The two largest gates were on the east and west sides, but there were smaller gates on the south and north, too. However, these weren’t open to the public.

I was afraid that after we started the attack, Vyrazul would order the guards to execute the commoners in the outskirts, so I decided to spread our squadrons all around. That way, they would free the people there before advancing towards the city gates.

Our soldiers were wearing enchanted armor, high-quality weapons, and most importantly, they were all well-fed and rested.

Aside from fighting the enemy soldiers, I gave certain groups a special mission.

Nessa and her group would make their way to Phelena’s temple to take care of whatever Vyrazul was doing there.

Of course, I didn’t want to send her team alone, so I told Gina and Carli to accompany her with their squadrons.

Once everyone had their objectives in mind, we started to spread around the city’s outskirts, which took us two days to set up fully.

Nonetheless, we were all ready, and our attack would commence as soon as nighttime arrived.
