Chapter 307: The Palace’s Dungeon (Part 1)
After Melina and I had come up with a new plan where I would be acting as bait for the empress’ guards, we left Vespera in charge of protecting everyone in the mansion and left from the back.
Once we were high up in the air, we split up. I rushed to the palace while Melina made her way to the Yushan mansion.
I was supposed to cause a commotion, and the easiest way to do that would be to simply shoot a fire spell at the palace and blow up a wall or something. However, that could also seem too obvious.
When Sinoc and the Scarlet Trio reacted to our magic, they were sensing the MP of a single teleport spell, so I thought that something more destructive would be obvious that it was a diversion.
Still, that made the light bulb at the top of my head light up.
I drank a little of the invisibility potion and descended to the side of the palace where Lania told us that the entrance to the dungeon was located.
I knocked out two guards who were patrolling the courtyard and hid their bodies in a bush before taking them to safety.
They were guarding the large, red trapdoor that was connected to the palace and led to the underground dungeon.
I took another swig of the invisibility potion to make sure that the effect wouldn’t end at the wrong time and made my way inside, carefully closing the trapdoor behind me.
The torches that were supposed to light up the hallway seemed to have been off for a long time. Nonetheless, I was still able to get to the bottom carefully.
When the hallway opened up, I was a bit shocked at the size of the dungeon.
Dozens of cells spanned along the hall for at least 40 meters, and each one of these cells had people inside who looked in worse shape than the commoners in the outskirts.
I noticed that all of them were adults, which made me wonder if the empress didn’t like to imprison children, but that didn’t seem like a thing an evil devil would care about.
At the end of the hallway, there was a metallic door that looked pretty heavy, and when I was about to open it, I heard footsteps and voices from guards coming from the other side.
Thankfully, I was still invisible, so when they opened it, they couldn’t see me standing right in front of them.
Before they closed the door behind them, I quickly sneaked in and found myself in another hallway that looked exactly like the previous one—a simple hallway surrounded by prison cells with another heavy metallic door at the back.
For the first few dozen cells, I didn’t see anyone inside, which was different from the previous hallway, where every cell had at least one person.
Suddenly, in one of the few cells that had someone, I saw a blonde woman with blood dripping down her head and both of her arms chained to the wall in the back.
’Is that...!?’ I thought.
"Karla!?" I exclaimed while still invisible, catching the woman’s attention and making her raise her head.
"Ichiro...?" she weakly muttered.
"Yes, Karla, I’m here. What the hell happened!?" I hastily asked.
The last time I saw Karla in person, she was leaving with Jackson to go adventuring. But the real last time I saw her was when I checked Leslie’s memories.
Karla couldn’t see me since I was invisible, but she still knew that I was truly there with her.
"Ichiro... There are two kids on the outskirts..." Karla said, her voice tired and raspy.
’The first thing she says to me is to go rescue the kids... Look at yourself once in a while!’ I thought.
Still, it was pretty selfless of her to ask about the children when she herself looked even more miserable.
"They are perfectly fine, Karla. Let’s get you out of here..." I replied, grabbing the cell’s bars and using pure physical strength to bend them open.
I could have used magic to bend them more easily, but that could have made the empress’ guards come at me, and I still wasn’t ready for it.
"Are you invisible or something...?" she asked after witnessing the metal bars bending by themselves.
"I am. Here, drink this..." I said, pulling her chain out from the wall and making her drink an invisibility potion.
Now that we were both invisible, she could see me, so I gave her a healing potion to take care of the bruises and cuts that marred her body and asked her what happened.
When Jackson and Karla left End Town, they went straight to Guanghua after Jackson said that there was something bothering him there.
They knew that Guanghua didn’t have any active adventurers’ guild after the new empress rose to power, so Karla understood that it had to do with another devil.
When the two of them arrived at the capital, the first thing they saw was Sinoc attacking the Salonia family in the outskirts, so they decided to interrupt.
’That’s what I saw in Leslie’s memories...’ I thought.
Karla explained that Jackson managed to convince Sinoc to call Vyrazul to meet him, and when the mage complied, the empress arrived at the spot not a minute late.
Vyrazul felt annoyed at the fact that Jackson was trying to mess with her plans, so Jackson made a "demonic vow" with her.
"What’s that?" I asked.
A demonic vow was a contract with a devil that, if broken, could instantly kill them as it was considered a curse.
Jackson said that he wouldn’t interfere with Vyrazul’s plan as long as she didn’t hunt down Leslie, but before they could seal the deal, the two devils noticed that Leslie’s mother was still breathing.
It was thanks to Leslie’s father jumping in front of her and taking most of Sinoc’s attack on himself.
His wife was fatally wounded, but the healing potion that Karla doused on her before running away with Leslie ended up saving her life.
At that moment, Jackson changed the conditions of the vow and asked Vyrazul to let the mother live as well. In exchange, he wouldn’t mess with her plans.
