Chapter 303: Counter-Strategy (Part 1)
It took me less than an hour to teleport all of the enslaved villagers in area 4, and honestly, I felt like I was cutting it close.
I could feel the magic quartz coming from area 10, which was good and bad.
It was good because I knew that Melina was already teleporting the people there, and bad because it meant that any experienced mage would be able to sense it.
’If I’m able to sense it all the way from here, there is no reason why the empress’ guards wouldn’t...’ I thought.
Still, the fact that the city was so big also slowed down the guards since they needed to cover so much area.
By the time I was done teleporting everyone, I stowed away the magic quartz back in my void pocket and flew back to the eastern gate without anyone noticing.
I could have teleported back directly, but we needed to enter the gates so the guards could write down our names. Otherwise, they would think that the Xuanji family had disappeared.
Five minutes later, Melina arrived at our meeting spot, and when we walked all the way to the eastern gate, we noticed the guards were hastily moving around and barely paying attention to us when letting us through.
We also saw that the wanted posters for our four companions had been plastered all over the city, but as long as our faces remained a secret, that wouldn’t be a problem.
The only one of those four that was present in the capital was Vespera, and she was in the underground room at the Bao’s home, so it was safe to say that looking for her would be difficult.
When we returned to the mansion, Lady Bao and her servants greeted us and said that the liberation of the slaves had gone smoothly.
It turned out that Lady Bao saw all the people who were being teleported to her home and started helping Vespera by guiding them to the magic quartz.
Later, I received a voice message from the battle-maids at Yuandu, saying that they had already relocated all of the people we sent to other countries.
At nighttime, Lord Bao returned home from the palace and told us everything he had heard from his perspective.
While he was at the palace, he was delegating some rookies to spread the wanted posters of my companions.
It was an emperor’s order, and since I told him to keep doing his job as usual, he reluctantly agreed to do it.
Lord Bao said that now that he knew they were our allies, he felt terrible about prosecuting them. Nonetheless, I told him to stop worrying about them as they could protect themselves.
During his shift, he received an urgent summon from the empress, and when he arrived at the meeting room, different government officials were gathered.
Mage Sinoc was present and explained that he had felt a strange surge of magic coming from the outskirts.
One of the nobles asked what kind of magic he had felt, but Sinoc wasn’t sure and urged them to stay safe until he figured it out.
When the empress received the news that everyone in areas 4 and 10 had disappeared without a trace, she ordered a dozen soldiers to guard each of the remaining commoners’ areas.
"Hmm, so if we go to another area in the outskirts tomorrow..." I said.
"You would have to face at least a dozen soldiers," Lord Bao finished the sentence.
To be honest, a dozen ordinary soldiers weren’t much for us, so I didn’t feel threatened about their presence in the commoners’ areas.
"The problem isn’t the soldiers. It’s the next order she gave..." Lord Bao continued.
The empress commanded the soldiers that, in case they were attacked, they had to start killing commoners.
Even if we freed everyone in two other areas, the guards would simply start killing the commoners in the others.
"She got us there. She knows our priority is the safety of the people..." I said.
However, now that we knew their next move, we started planning around it.
We couldn’t keep freeing enslaved villagers the next day. At least not on the outskirts, so we asked the Bao couple to tell us which families had the most slaves in their homes.
Of course, the first three names he mentioned were the Zhao, Wang, and Guo families, which were the three nobles we kidnapped at Xiulan.
Still, we knew that the Scarlet Trio was guarding them, so we asked for more names that we could target.
It’s not that we didn’t want to face the trio, but we knew that once we did, there would be no going back. For now, the best we could do was get as many people to a safe place before the city was potentially destroyed in our fight.
If our fight with Vyrazul were as messy as my fight with Zagor, then at least a quarter of this city would get razed completely.
After Lord Bao wrote the names of dozens of noble families at the top of his head, Melina and I decided to act that same night.
We felt a little guilty since Leslie and Yujun wanted to sleep with us, but we had to relish the moment we had now that hundreds of guards were sent to the outskirts.
After putting our masks on, we started flying around the city, targeting the residences of the people in the note.
Any guard that we found we would knock out and teleport to the residence so Vespera could send them to Yuandu, which, at this point, had over a hundred seized guards and nobles.
The place was supposed to be a settlement, but it literally had more people living in it than End Town.
Some of the nobles were sleeping when we barged into their homes, and, not wanting to overload our settlement with prisoners, we decided to let them sleep while we freed all of their slaves.
The unlucky nobles who weren’t sleeping when we barged in were taken with us. Simply because leaving them there would just make them ask for help and mobilize the guards.
After freeing a bit over a hundred slaves, we returned to the Bao’s mansion to get some rest, expecting the following day to get a bit crazier in the city.
