My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World
Chapter 296: The Bao Family

Chapter 296: The Bao Family

After giving Yujun his bath and teaching him how it’s done, we started making our way towards Lady Bao’s room to meet up with Melina and Leslie, but we bumped into them in the hallway.

There was something that I still wanted to ask the noblewoman, but when I asked them to wait for me, Melina, and the two kids decided they wanted to come with me.

I knocked on her door and walked in, startling the maid, who seemed to be on guard any time we passed by the room.

"My saviors, what can I do for you?" Lady Bao asked, looking like she genuinely wanted to help us.

"I have a question for you. How did you know about us when we entered with the masks?" I said.

"Because of my husband, of course..." she replied.

Lady Bao elaborated and told us that her husband would always share the details of her job with her, as it was something that she requested of him.

"They know that you kidnapped those enslavers and freed all those villagers. However, they don’t know how you did it..." she said.

"The ones at Liren weren’t so lucky, though. Their faces are plastered on wanted posters all over the city..." Lady Bao continued.

She was referring to Vespera, Nessa, and the two maids, who had created a chaotic scene at Liren that turned them into wanted criminals since they didn’t hide their faces.

’I see. So they are all aware of our presence in this country...’ I thought.

"If you want more details, I’m sure my husband knows everything there is to know about it..."

"Why are you helping us?" Interjected Melina.

Lady Bao let out a gentle but sad smile. "I suppose I like clinging to hope..." she said.

"Even when you had those masks on, I could tell that you had no malicious intent. You also saved my life, so I will make it my goal to repay you both!" Lady Bao exclaimed.

*sigh* "I believe you..." I said.

I considered myself to be a good judge of character, and honestly, I could tell that this woman had good intentions but didn’t have the power to act on them.

We asked her why she treated her slaves like real servants, and she explained that while she couldn’t pay them because of their official status, she never wanted to enslave anyone.

The "slaves" in her residence were all people who worked there before the commoners’ enslavement law was active, and to protect them from the abuse of other nobles, she kept them all.

Officially, they were slaves in Guanghua, so they wouldn’t get paid for any of the work they did, but at least they could lead a safe life while under the Bao’s roof.

"I see. Then, are you willing to work with us?" I asked the woman, who widened her eyes as she wasn’t expecting me to say that.

"W-work with you? How?"

"We need everyone here to act as if nothing happened. Let the guards and servants do their job as usual. Of course, we are still going to stay here and use this place as our base of operations..." I explained.

I couldn’t think of a better hideout than the home of one of the most important government officials in the country, and while we were still going to use it as our base even if she declined, it would be much better for us if they cooperated.

"I understand. I’ll help you!" Lady Bao exclaimed.

"Good. Explain everything to your servants and get them back to work," I said, making the woman stand up energetically from her bed.

We accompanied Lady Bao to the living room where we were keeping the guards and servants, and as she explained the situation to them and how we healed her from her disease, I noticed Leslie was staring at me.

She wasn’t looking at me with anger or anything. It seemed to me like she was curious, but I brushed it off at that moment since we were pretty busy with the servants.

Once everyone returned to their posts, it only took about thirty minutes for Lady Bao’s husband to arrive.

When he came through the main entrance, he found himself a few meters away from his wife, and both Melina and I were wearing our masks.

"The masked kidnappers..." he muttered as he quickly drew his sword.

"Dear, wait!" Lady Bao shouted.

"Yue, you should be in bed... Did these people drag you here!?" her husband asked with worry.

"No, dear. They cured my illness..."

The man stood still for a few seconds with his eyes widened in shock. The sight of his healthy wife approaching him made him drop his sword and kneel on the floor as his eyes swelled up with tears.

Lady Bao kneeled with him and hugged him tightly as the man asked how it was possible.

"There’s a lot to talk about, dear. Let’s go to the living room..." she replied, holding her husband’s hand and helping him up.

Honestly, it was kind of heartwarming. I didn’t know why at that time, but the man looked like he had been suffering along with the enslaved villagers, and seeing him break down at the sight of his healthy wife was almost relatable to me in some way.

"I’m Lord Bao Rui. I can’t thank you enough..." he said before we made our way to the living room, slightly bowing his head.

I couldn’t sense a single speck of malicious intent or bloodlust from the man. He felt genuinely grateful, so I removed my mask since it didn’t seem necessary and asked him to listen to what we had to say.

It was a long talk, but we managed to tell them everything we knew about the devil controlling their country and how it was an evolved succubus that could control men.

Lord Bao said that he suspected none other than the empress, explaining that ever since the day she rose to her position, he felt an ominous aura coming from her.

Not everyone was capable of sensing demonic energy, but the way that Lord Bao described it was exactly how it felt with the other devils we had encountered.
