Chapter 292: Searching for a Target

Chapter 292: Searching for a Target

With both Leslie and Yujun following us, Melina and I came up with a new plan to keep them safe while we were in the capital.

The two kids were walking right behind us at first, but we noticed they got tired pretty quickly, so we carried them in our arms until we reached the line to the city gates.

Melina took Leslie in her arms, and the girl was a bit combative at first as she didn’t like to get picked up. However, when Melina’s gentle embrace lifted her up, the little girl blushed and stopped her tantrum.

Yujun, on the other hand, was very quiet and submissive, so he had nothing to say when I lifted him up. The kid hadn’t said a word to us, but he seemed to trust us enough to take him with us.

When we saw the line to the gates not far from us, we had to put them back down on the ground, or people would start wondering why nobles were carrying slaves with them.

Luckily, the queue was moving faster than in Xiulan since they had more guards inspecting the ID wooden tablets at the entrance, so it only took about 45 minutes for our turn.

After we gave our fake wooden tablets to the guards, they wrote down our names on some kind of document and stared at the two kids for a moment.

We thought that the guards would inquire about them, but they didn’t bat an eye and simply allowed us in.

’It’s probably normal for nobles to bring slaves from the outskirts. That’s why they don’t bother asking about them anymore...’ I thought.

The capital city of Guanghua was indeed immense. Its roads were wide enough for four carriages to fit side by side, and the buildings had an ancient Chinese-like architecture that made it feel like we were traveling to the past.

There were lots of people walking around, but not as much as I would have expected for a city of this size.

The capital of the Droman Empire wasn’t as big as this, but it felt much more lively since it seemed like it had plenty more people walking around.

In Guanghua, only nobles were allowed the luxury of walking around town without a care in the world. All of the commoners had been enslaved, so it made sense why the city felt somewhat empty.

Even when their empire was the one that had the most noble families out of all the others in the world, it wasn’t enough to make their capital city feel truly alive.

As we walked on the main road, Melina and I were scanning our surroundings attentively, not knowing exactly where to go next.

"Is this your first time here?" Leslie asked.

I could tell that the little girl was extremely intuitive. If we were true nobles from Guanghua, it would have been impossible for us to have never visited the capital.

The fact that she could tell it was our first time there was pretty impressive. Still, Melina only answered by placing a finger on her lips, signaling Leslie to keep the secret.

However, the little girl knew the city much better than we did, so we asked her if she knew the location of any nobles’ mansions.

Once Leslie started guiding us through the roads of the capital, we reached another wide road with different residences—all mansions.

"Is your home here?" Leslie asked.

"Something like that..." I replied.

It was called the Golden Road, and it was the area where the most prominent nobles had their homes. It was basically like a rich-people community.

Not every noble had their house there, of course, as they were reserved for the highest-ranked families.

We noticed one of the mansions had the crest with the snake and the shield, which we recognized as Yushan Wu’s family crest.

His father was one of the people we needed to kidnap to halt the food supplies for the nobles, but we had to wait for the right time. Still, it was good to know where his house was located.

We also saw the crest of the Zhao family in another mansion not too far from that one, but they weren’t our target for the time being.

"Leslie, do you know if there are any houses like these but, ummm, further away?" I asked the little girl, knowing that I may have been asking too much of her.

She placed her little finger on her chin, which was kind of adorable, and thought for a few seconds before pointing to another road.

We walked for around 20 minutes until we reached an area of the city that was a bit more barren, building-wise.

The mansions had a lot of green space between them, so it almost felt like they were larger than the ones at Golden Road. However, we later found out that these houses belonged to lower-ranked nobles.

There were small houses built along the road, but they were all abandoned as commoners used to live there before they were enslaved.

Melina and I had our eyes on three different houses. Their location and size were perfect for us to hide, but we needed to decide which one to take.

The first one had a crest with a lion, the second had a bluejay bird, and the last one was a rat, which I thought was a bit strange to have as a family crest.

We moved to a dark alley for a moment and sent a voice message to the people in Yuandu, directed at Ling and Wu so that they could tell us about the three families.

We didn’t want to target a good noble family like the Yushan or Mei, so we needed to know what kind of activity these guys did before we took over their house.

Not even five minutes after sending the message, Mei Ling replied.

The house with a lion was the house of the Military Chief of Guanghua, which was weird, as I would have expected someone that important to have their home at Golden Road.

The bluejay family were ones who opposed the enslavement of commoners. However, to protect themselves from execution, they fabricated a story about how their family couldn’t take slaves due to a tradition, which had to be respected by the emperor in the end.

The rat crest was from a family of a government official who worked on the finances of Guanghua, and while they had a few slaves working under them, Mei Ling stated that they didn’t have any influence.

’Hmm, I think I know which one to take, then...’
