Chapter 282: Enslavers’ List
Chapter 282: Enslavers’ List
Once I had teleported the kids and returned to the backroom of the theater, Bjorn and Magnus were staring at me with perplexed expressions.
"What? I told you we were going to get everyone out of here..." I said with a smile.
Bjorn started laughing loudly, which made me a little nervous since it could call the other guards’ attention. Still, his reaction made me smile a little.
When Melina returned after leaving the family of four in Yuandu, we moved to the elves’ cell.
Seeing the revealing outfits they had on, Melina opened her void pocket, pulled out a pair of sundresses that she had stored inside, and gave them to the elves to cover themselves.
Of course, I turned around to give them some privacy while changing, and Magnus used that moment to ask where we were taking the people.
"I can’t tell you right now. But I promise it’s a good place..." I replied.
I didn’t want to say we were taking them to Yuandu since we didn’t know if someone was listening.
The theater didn’t have any magic or demonic energy lingering around, but we could never be too sure, so it was better to stay silent while inside.
After the two elves changed into their new outfits, Melina teleported them, and I took care of the two northerners.
At Yuandu, I told Bjorn and Magnus that we could talk more later and returned to the theater to free the rest of the slaves.
It took us an hour to scout the entire place, knocking out a few more guards in the process. In the end, we brought to Yuandu a total of 32 people, not counting the guards. Still, we weren’t done for the night.
At one point, we reached an office and found a document that had a list of all the slaves that would be sold during the auction and the names of the families that were contributing to the event—meaning, the names of those who were selling slaves.
"Zhao Lan - Representative of the Zhao family.
Wang Tao - Representative of the Wang family.
Guo Yang - Representative of the Guo family."
"We got names..." I said as I read the document.
Since we didn’t know who the other two were, we decided to take the document with us as it would help us find all of the enslaved citizens.
The names of Bjorn and Magnus were written on the list, and it was stated that they were brought in by a man called "Wang Tao."
All we had to do was make sure that we had found everyone who was written on that list. Still, this was just a very small portion of the thousands of other citizens who were already enslaved.
After leaving the theater, we returned to the inn room, where Mei Ling was waiting for us nervously.
We entered from the window without anyone noticing, and the noblewoman instantly ran up to us to inquire what we had been doing.
However, we thought it would be best for her if we didn’t tell her. That way, in the unfortunate case that she was interrogated about it, she would genuinely have no idea of our actions.
I showed her the documents with the names of the families that were putting up slaves for sale and asked if she knew where their homes were located.
Ling looked at the document for a moment, and her worried expression shifted to a more determined one as she looked up at us.
"I... I do know where they live," she muttered hesitantly.
"Alright, can you give us some directions?" I continued.
"N-No!" she said confidently, making Melina and I kind of confused.
"I won’t say anything until you tell me what you guys are doing!" she exclaimed.
To be fair, she had a point. We appeared out of nowhere in her carriage, gave her fake names, told her we would take down the devil in her country, and left her alone for a few hours at night.
’Of course, she doesn’t trust us. Who would!?’ I thought.
Shooting Melina a glance, we both realized we had taken our lie too far, considering that Mei Ling wasn’t truly a bad person.
"My name is Melina Sephyr, and he is Ichiro. We are here to free Guanghua from the devil... That’s all," Melina said with a bit of indifference.
Ling, however, widened her eyes and approached Melina a bit more.
"S-sephyr? Are you the princess!?" Ling asked, perplexed.
"Shhhh!" the princess replied, covering Ling’s mouth with her hands.
"S-sorry, I..." Ling continued, almost panicking as she didn’t know what to do.
"Just calm down, Ling. Now that you know our secret, you might be in danger, so let’s keep the act until we can get out of here," I interjected.
Now that we had freed everyone at the theater, the auction for the following night would most likely be canceled or postponed. Still, Ling told us that more slaves would arrive to be sold on the day of the auction.
"Not every family brings their slaves to the venue..." she said.
"For example, Zhao Lan was supposed to receive more slaves today to sell, but they wouldn’t have been sent to the venue until the day of the auction..." she continued.
From what she told us, the family that always sent their slaves to the venue early was the Wang family. However, she didn’t know the reason for it.
"So, the Wangs house probably doesn’t have as many slaves as Zhao Lan did..." I pondered out loud.
Ling agreed with my theory and said that Guo Yang was similar to Zhao Lan. In fact, they were really good friends who shared the same hobby of beating up defenseless, enslaved villagers.
"I see. Do you know if any of these families have a crest with a snake and a shield?" I asked.
"Hmm, no. That would be the symbol of the Yushan family. They own the largest farmland in Guanghua, so you could say they are the main food providers for the nobles," Ling explained.
’Hmm, so that guy was really just bringing food to the slaves?’ I pondered, remembering the noble we spotted leaving the theater at night.
