My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 263: Sage Astra
Chapter 263: Sage Astra
The day after we arrived at the Mages’ Tower, Headmaster Devon took Melina and me to meet the sage who took care of the tower.
Her office was on floor 99, and when the elevator doors opened, we were shocked at the appearance of the room.
It was as if we were entering a field of flowers with the blue sky above us, which was impossible, so it was obviously a spell that was placed inside.
"Welcome, young sages!" said the voice of a woman.
With the sound of a finger snap, the field of flowers disappeared, and we found ourselves standing in the center of an office surrounded by books and rolled-up scrolls.
In front of us, an old lady with a cane calmly looked at us with a smile. The woman was a bit shorter than me, but her slightly hunched back was the main cause for it.
She wore robes similar to the ones Devon used, except she had an insignia with a star, which symbolized her position as the Headmaster of the tower.
"My name is Astra. I’m glad I finally get to meet you two..." the old lady said with a sweet tone of voice.
After introducing ourselves, Sage Astra snapped her fingers, and the room around us changed once again, turning into a living room with a tea set atop a coffee table surrounded by plush couches.
The lady invited us to a cup of tea, which we had no problem accepting, but Melina and I were entranced by the magic that the woman had used.
’Can she change the space around her? Is this an illusion?’ I thought, not able to recognize the type of spell that the sage was using.
As we sat down, Astra used magic to levitate the cups and serve us tea without moving a single finger.
’Hmm, if this were an illusion, then the tea wouldn’t be real... right?’ I pondered as I got a hold of my cup and sipped it.
’Is this apple tea!?’ I thought.
The old lady let out a chuckle. "You must recognize that flavor. The fruit comes straight from your hometown, after all..." she said.
One of the first edible things I ever found when I got to this world were the apples growing in End Forest, which were called "monzos."
Somehow, this very common fruit only grew in End Forest, and after Vespera’s spiders started helping with the foraging of fruits, its popularity and supply increased a lot.
After some time, apples were being exported from End Town all over the Sephyr Kingdom, and at some point, they also started sending them to other countries.
While it was nice to see apples so far from our hometown, it also made me think about how much this lady knew about us.
I mean, it’s not like we sold the apples with my name on them, so it wasn’t common knowledge that I was the one who started the export of the fruit.
Sage Astra must have seen my uneasiness and raised a hand slowly and gently.
"Please, do not fret. It is simply one of my abilities to keep an eye on the sages..." Astra said.
"An ability?" Melina pondered out loud.
The old lady nodded. "It’s only fair I tell you a little bit more about me..."
Astra explained that she became a sage at the age of 20 and was the headmaster of the Vista academy for ten years before the old sage of the tower passed away.
After the mages at the tower voted for the next headmaster, Astra was chosen for the intricate spells she developed.
"You see, the main reason God Asys took an interest in me was for my spatial magic..." Astra explained.
’Spatial magic? So, she does control the space around her!’ I thought with amazement.
When she got into more details, she explained that she could "store" different spaces in one area.
"For example, this office of mine has about fifteen different other spaces I could switch to..." said Astra before snapping her fingers, making us appear again in the flower field.
Then, she snapped them again, making the room appear as if it was at the bottom of the ocean.
Another snap, and we were on top of a snowy mountain, then on a beach, then back in the living room.
Melina and I were perplexed after seeing her demonstration with our eyes wide open.
It wasn’t only the difficulty of her spell, but the amount of MP that the lady had was almost too overwhelming.
Any time she snapped her fingers, she used as much MP as I would use when casting some of my most potent combat spells.
Still, after exhibiting her powers, she said that there was something else she wanted to show us, which was the main reason she wanted to see us.
Once we had finished our cups of tea, she snapped her fingers to bring us back to her office and slowly stood up to make her way to a wooden chest on the side.
Astra was extremely powerful, but her body was that of a real old lady as she moved slowly and patiently.
Pulling out what seemed like a crystal ball that witches would use in movies, she brought it to the coffee table and placed it in the center.
"A crystal ball?" I asked.
"Ah, so you know what this is?" the old lady said.
"Oh, well... Kind of, I guess..." I nervously replied.
’Right, I guess crystal balls aren’t fictional here...’
Sage Astra explained that decades ago, when Sage Louie rose to his position, he did it by creating a spell that could make the person "return their bodies to a past state."
"To a past state? As in going back in time?" I asked.
The sage elaborated further, and while it was considered "time magic," Sage Louie didn’t control all of the time, but only the one that had passed on an individual.
"For example, if a person got stabbed, he would be able to return their body to a past state when they weren’t stabbed. The time around them wouldn’t change, only the body’s..." Astra explained.
It was sort of confusing, but not really. It would be extremely tough if someone wanted to use magic to bring the entire world to the past.
However, with a little understanding of how it worked, he could manipulate the time of a single individual.
