My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 258: Elve’s Acceptance
Chapter 258: Elve’s Acceptance
After explaining everything that transpired in the forest that night to Darfin and his group of hunter elves, Vespera noticed something wrong with Salamandra’s corpse.
Normally, beasts with large amounts of demonic energy would disintegrate after dying, so it was strange that the process hadn’t started by that point.
When Vespera inspected the headless body closer, she said that it was as if all of the blood had been sucked out of his body.
"Did Drakzen do that?" I pondered aloud.
"I’m not sure how he would accomplish something like this so quickly..." my companion replied.
Vespera elaborated further and said that the catalyst for disintegrating the demonic beasts’ bodies was their blood, which would boil and consume them whenever they died.
Since Salamandra’s corpse had been sucked dry, Vespera did him the favor and cremated his body with magic.
I noticed that Yoru was stumbling a little bit from exhaustion, so I told him to get in my shadow and relax while we took care of the rest.
Now that the elves knew the truth about Nessa, I was expecting them to reject our entry to their country.
"Alright, everyone. Let’s get back to our camp..." I said.
The house that we built in the Lunar Forest was quite far from us, but it was better to fly there than to build an entirely new base.
However, we were stopped by Darfin, who offered us rest in Silverleaf’s settlement.
"Are you sure? We are not trying to cause trouble," I said to the elf commander.
"I believe the chief should hear all this from you, sage. Even if I told him everything, it would be hard to believe..." Darfin replied.
Melina grabbed my hand and nodded, signaling that she thought it would be fine, so we accepted their offer.
It took us a little over an hour to reach the veil and another thirty minutes to get to Silverleaf, where we all spent the night.
The following morning, we were asked to visit the chief at the capital. However, instead of taking the elven railway like the first time, we could easily teleport there as it wasn’t too far.
When we got to their castle, the chief was already waiting for us in a meeting room with Eve and instantly asked for the details about what had happened the previous night.
"So, it all started when we left the veil..." I said, telling them of everything we witnessed.
The chief was somewhat shocked at the fact that Drakzen had been roaming around their country, but it still didn’t make much sense to me why they were there.
The country’s barrier prevented trespassing, so the plan seemed terrible from the beginning. However, the chief thought of something different.
During Salamandra’s attacks, ten elf hunters were killed after being lured out of the veil, believing they had a chance of taking down the Accursed Beast.
"So, his plan was just to lure you out and reduce your numbers?" I asked.
Darfin wholeheartedly believed that was the case, explaining that devils hated the elven race more than anyone in the world.
When he said that, I looked at Nessa from the side of my eye and saw that she was looking down apprehensively.
"You see, elves played a big role thousands of years ago in vanquishing a devil invasion..." Chief Aiwin said, telling a story that was passed down through generations.
Over a thousand years ago, there was a sage that traveled hunting devils all over the world.
Eventually, there was a massive war against them, and all of the races and nations of the world got together to defeat the devils.
It was said that an elf played a big role in the war, and thus, the devils started hating them over the other races.
His story got me thinking a lot. Slavery was legal in two countries—The Guanghua Kingdom and the Northern Empire.
Those two were the nations where we knew two devils were hiding, so the fact that slavery suddenly became legal there and targeted mostly elves wasn’t a coincidence.
Of course, there were also the weird humans who wanted to kidnap elves for their beauty, but those were much simpler to catch.
’It’s as if the elves’ treatment is revenge for what they did to the devils back then...’ I thought.
After telling both of our stories, we moved on to the next topic that seemed to be eating away at the chief’s mind.
"That girl with you..." he muttered.
"Mhmm, you must have heard already," I said.
I was expecting the chief to act shocked or confused, but he seemed to take the news of Nessa being a devil quite calmly, unlike his daughter, who widened her eyes with fear.
"Look, I can guarantee that Nessa is not a bad person, but I understand if you don’t want us here for now..." I continued.
Back in the forest, when the elves appeared and went to attack Nessa, she didn’t even move or raise her guard. She simply just stood there and waited for her fate.
It was evident that Nessa truly didn’t want to fight anyone unless it were a match in a tournament where she knew everyone would be relatively safe.
Even when Melina and I sparred against her to practice, she was always very reserved and careful not to hurt us.
Chief Aiwin raised his hand gently. "I didn’t say anything like that. Of course, you all can stay here as long as you need," he said with a smile.
"I’ve lived for a very long time. Even if that girl is a devil, I don’t feel any ill intentions towards anyone here..." the chief continued.
’Well, I suppose that if you live for a few hundred years, you become a much better judge of character...’ I thought.
We were planning to stay in Eldariel for a few days before continuing our way to Balinesia.
The Sage’s Assembly was still three weeks away, and we calculated that the rest of the trip would take us one week at most.
With that in mind, we decided to stay in the elven nation and help their small towns and settlements with whatever they needed.
