Chapter 247: Elven Railway

When Darfin and his group of elves guided us to the first settlement called Silverleaf, he explained that it was the place where most hunters prepared to enter the Lunar Forest.

Since it was the closest settlement to the border, it was faster to leave from there than any other place.

As soon as we arrived, every single elf in town was staring at us—some with suspicion and others with curiosity.

The grass was green, and they had no dirt roads or paths anywhere. Some of the trees had silver leaves, which matched the name of the settlement.

The houses were made of a material resembling white marble, trimmed with green and golden engravings that gave the structures in the middle of the woods a regal look.

I thought that some of the elves would be curious and ask Darfin who we were. However, the simple fact that we were inside their country was enough to satiate their curiosity.

In their eyes, anyone who crossed the veil wasn’t an enemy, so I supposed that was a good thing for us.

On one side of the town, away from all the homes, I saw what looked like a train cart on top of a rail that went deep into the elven forest.

It wasn’t a big train cart. If anything, it looked more like the small carts that miners would use to transport the ore outside the mines, although much larger.

The train cart had no roof or other covering, only two long wooden planks on each side to sit on.

Darfin, seeing my curiosity for the cart, explained that they called it the "Elven Railway."

"It was a gift given to us by someone hundreds of years ago. Although, nobody who remembers them is alive..." Darfin said with a sad tone.

Vespera told me long ago that elves could live for hundreds of years, so the fact that all of the elves who knew of the person who built the railway were dead was a testament to how old it was.

The railway connected the elven capital to all of the settlements in their nation, allowing them faster travel between areas.

According to Darfin, walking without stopping from Silverleaf to the capital could take up to two days. However, it only took the cart a few hours to get there.

We weren’t planning on visiting any other settlement other than Silverleaf, as we were just trying to help them out with the Salamandra problem. However, Darfin insisted, saying that at least Melina should go.

"I know that Lady Eve would be delighted to see her friend here..." the elf commander said.

"I don’t mind visiting, but wasn’t the monster close to the veil? Wouldn’t it be better if we stayed here in case of emergencies?" I asked my group.

Darfin, hearing my concerns, said that the veil would hold back the monster for us in the meantime and prepared the next railway cart for us to board the following day.

Before boarding the cart, I took out a magic quartz from my void pocket and placed it next to a tall tree.

"Please tell the others not to move this around. If there is an emergency, this crystal will allow us to get back here in an instant." I explained to Darfin.

The half of the crystal that was inside my void pocket was connected to the one I was leaving at Silverleaf so that we could return to the settlement at any time, from anywhere.

Once those preparations were set, our group boarded the giant mining cart that could easily fit ten people and made our way to the capital.

The ride was pretty enjoyable as it went through the elven forest that separated their small towns, giving us a great sight of the forest’s vegetation and fauna.

The elven forest was considered the safest in the world as no monsters resided there. Instead, there were lots of rare animals and plants that couldn’t be found anywhere else—like a sanctuary.

We had another elf on our cart who was acting as our guide, and he explained that the elves were forbidden from attacking the animals in their forest, so whenever they wanted to hunt for food, they would leave the veiled area.

The species that lived inside the veil were the ones that already lived in that area before the veil was lifted. For that reason, if they hunted the animals in their territory, it would eventually lead them to extinction.

’How come this country, which hasn’t had visitors for hundreds of years, has a better tour guide than any other place...?’ I wondered.

As the cart kept moving along the tracks, everyone in my group was sort of mesmerized by the view.

It almost felt as if we were on a safari, except every animal that we saw could belong to a petting zoo because of how small and cute they were.

At one point, while the cart was still moving, Vespera raised her hand, and a small red bird landed on the back of it.

"Aww, look at this little guy..." Vespera said as she gave the bird a little pat on the head with one finger.

Since my companion was a Legendary Beast, there was something about her that made the animals attracted to her. It was as if they knew that Vespera was their ally from a single glance.

After three and half hours of traveling, we spotted the capital in the distance, quickly approaching it.

It was easy to tell it was the capital because the castle’s towers were tall enough to overlook the forest surrounding the territory.

The buildings and the castle seemed to be made of the same white marble material with the green and golden finishes that we saw in Silverleaf.

When I asked the tour guide about it, he said that they built their structures using a mineral called "White Limestone," which was abundant in their mines.

There wasn’t anything special about it, except for the fact that it was a bit sturdier than ordinary limestone. Still, I didn’t think that was a bad thing.
