My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 237: Nessa’s Pain
Chapter 237: Nessa’s Pain
The day after Melina’s debutante ball, the news about our engagement spread like wildfire all over the world.
Of course, having representatives from almost every nation present there made it easy for the news to go around quickly, though I didn’t expect it to be that fast.
In a world that didn’t have social media or quick ways of communicating, they certainly spread information quickly when it interested them.
Nonetheless, I wasn’t opposed to the idea of people knowing about our engagement since it would deter other nobles from proposing themselves.
We decided that the wedding would take place a year and a half from that moment, mainly because we were tired of attending ceremonies.
A few days later, all of the invitees and graduate students returned to their countries, except for Yuki and her family, whom we offered to bring back with the magic quartz we left at Kyotora.
The Sage’s Assembly was starting in a few months, so we needed to make our way to the eastern continent soon.
We could have traveled with Sage Devon by boat, but we were planning on taking more magic quartz from Kyotora so that we could have more transportation methods between nations.
I left all my anti-illusion totems with the knights of the 7th so that they could place them along the road on the Illusive Forest and finish it.
Holding the totems would have the same protection effect on them as if it was placed on the ground, so it was a job that anyone could do as long as they didn’t stray too far from them.
When we visited End Forest to tell the alchemists of our plans, Nessa asked to join us.
The secret devil enjoyed traveling and adventuring, so the prospect of going through the eastern continent from north to south excited her quite a bit.
Still, I was feeling somewhat apprehensive about some of the places we would be visiting.
A few days before Melina’s debutante ball, I received voice messages from the Dawn’s Defenders (DD).
Back when the academy semester was just starting, I sent half of the DD members to the Guanghua Kingdom and the other half to the Northern Empire since those two nations were buying slaves from the Droman Empire.
Now, we knew for sure that devils were hiding in those countries, but they weren’t as dumb as Zagor, whose strength was solely focused on power without much strategy behind it.
For that reason, the members of DD weren’t able to locate the devils. However, they did tell me about the dire situation in those countries.
Nisa and Tony, the first members of DD that I met when they tried to rob us, were the ones stationed at the Guanghua Kingdom.
In their voice message, they explained that slavery in that nation was rampant as most of the commoners were enslaved by the nobles.
It was a new law by the emperor that stated that any noble could make any commoner their slaves without questions asked and closed the borders, essentially trapping them inside.
This led to commoners fleeing big cities and starting their own small settlements in rural areas of their nation.
The DD members expressed how hard it was to sneak inside the nation, but once they made it, they took refuge in one of the small settlements where commoners were hiding.
They tried entering a big city, but there was security at all entrances asking for documents, which only made it easier for nobles.
There was a big difference between what Zagor tried to do in Kalusia and what was happening in Guanghua.
In Kalusia, Zagor enslaved every single citizen, meaning that literally everyone in the country wanted to take him down.
However, the devil at Guanghua turned it into a "nobles Vs. commoners" ordeal, which gave them the support of some of their citizens.
Rio and Lampart, the DD members I sent to the Northern Empire, didn’t have better news. In fact, they said that the state of that nation was probably worse than Guanghua.
Slavery was rampant all over the country, sure, but the people were also starving and dying of cold as their nation didn’t have any vast green fields where people could run off for refuge.
Unfortunately, we weren’t planning on going there any time soon as we had our plate full with the eastern continent and the Sage’s Assembly.
__________
A few days before leaving with Yuki and her family to Kyotora, I was hanging out in End Forest with Nessa and Melina.
The pink-haired girl called us, telling us that she had been having some trouble holding back her demonic energy when fighting some of the monsters in End Forest.
It was understandable, considering some of the monsters there were pretty powerful and required a little more than brute strength to kill.
Still, the reason she called us was because she wanted to train and needed someone who could keep up with her. So naturally, I was her sparring partner.
It was the first time that Nessa and I fought, making me realize that her martial arts skills were the real deal.
I mean, I knew she had the martial arts skill, but I wasn’t expecting her to keep me on my toes with a simple barrage of punches and kicks.
A few minutes later, while we were still sparring, Nessa halted and clenched her chest in pain as she tried to hold back her demonic energy.
"Nessa. What’s the worst that could happen if you release it?" I asked after she calmed down.
To me, the only reason devils would hide their demonic energy was to look like humans and avoid detection by powerful mages. However, Melina and I knew that she was a devil, so I couldn’t see the point of hiding it when she was with us.
"I... Well... I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable..." she said in a sad tone.
I could understand what she was trying to say since people who were able to detect demonic energy would get a feeling of discomfort and fear whenever they sensed it.
Still, I thought that we could get used to it without having the poor girl suffer from holding back her own powers.
"Even if you don’t want to keep it released for a long time. You don’t have to go through that pain for our sake. Just let it all out..." Melina said.
At that moment, Nessa listened to our advice and released her demonic energy, which grew into a massive torrent of power in less than a second.
It felt powerful and intimidating as a black and red, shadowy aura covered Nessa’s body.
Her eye color changed to a bright yellow. Her horns were visible atop her forehead, and she had two small fangs that reminded me of a vampire story from my past life.
When she first released her demonic energy, Melina and I became wary for a second and took a step back out of pure instinct. But seeing Nessa acting like her usual self was enough to calm us down.
"Oh my god..." Melina muttered.
"I... sorry..." Nessa followed up, thinking that we were scared of her.
"Nessa, you are so cute!" exclaimed Melina, giving her a hug and caressing her head.
The pink-haired devil looked confused and blushed at the princess’ actions, making me chuckle loudly.
’Man, I wish all devils were like Nessa and Jackson...’
From that day on, we decided to tell the truth about Nessa to the battle-maids and told her that she didn’t need to keep hiding when she was with us.
Nonetheless, she would have to hide her demonic energy whenever we traveled.
