My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 222: Intermission (Part 1)
Chapter 222: Intermission (Part 1)
During Lucas and Nessa’s battle, my focus was briefly interrupted when I felt my relic bracelet moving for a quick second.
’Huh? What was that?’ I thought.
Still, when I looked back at the participants, I noticed that Nessa stopped in her tracks whilst holding her chest with apprehension.
"No, please..." Nessa muttered
Seeing her state, Lucas understood that something wrong was happening to her and stopped attacking.
Everything was happening very quickly, and the last time that I saw Nessa in pain like that was when her demonic energy overflowed from her body.
I exhaled deeply, using wind and water magic to create a dense mist on the arena that hid Nessa and Lucas from the spectators.
Then, I jumped in and grabbed Nessa’s arms, teleporting us both to the Ryuken Garden, where we first met.
As soon as we appeared, her body released a torrent of demonic energy that sent chills down my spine, but Nessa quickly absorbed it back, leaving her exhausted and barely conscious.
When her energy had completely dissipated, I teleported us back to the arena that was still covered in mist and left Nessa on the ground.
She was still conscious, but she couldn’t fight any longer without resorting to her demonic energy.
Using wind magic to disperse the mist, I announced that Nessa had run out of MP, and thus, Lucas was the winner.
While the spectators cheered, some of them expressed their disappointment at not being able to watch the end.
Nonetheless, I couldn’t focus on their concerns since I was looking around for whatever made my bracelet move during the fight.
’It moved just a second before Nessa lost control...’ I thought.
The final match would be between Yuki and Lucas, but they had a few hours to rest, and people used that time as an intermission.
During that break time, I asked Melina to come with me to Sage Lang’s office, where I told the two of them about what happened during Lucas and Nessa’s match.
However, I didn’t want to tell Lang about Nessa’s secret, so I told him that the bracelet, which was a devil tracker, pointed at the spectators for a moment.
Lang didn’t believe me but also said that he wouldn’t inquire any further.
As sages, we had to respect other sages’ secrets since, sometimes, those secrets were kept for the well-being of everyone.
Nonetheless, he said he would send some mages to the stands and have them patrol the area, just in case.
After leaving his office, we made our way to the infirmary, where Nessa was resting.
Thankfully, she was conscious and looked pretty healthy. Still, when she saw me, she got very nervous, thinking I was going to scold her for losing control.
"Sorry... I couldn’t control myself in the end..." she muttered.
"I don’t think it was your fault..." I replied.
Melina introduced herself to Nessa and praised her for her combat skills, making the devil flush slightly at the princess’ remarks.
Seeing that she had calmed down a bit after Melina’s words, I explained to Nessa everything I saw during her battle and how my relic suddenly pointed somewhere else.
"Nessa. Is it possible for other devils to activate your powers?" I asked.
The pink-haired girl placed her hand on her chin and closed her eyes for a few seconds before opening them widely with a hint of fear.
"Th-there are only two devils I know that can increase other devils’ demonic energy..." she replied hesitantly.
"Do you know their names?" I continued.
Nessa bit her lips with apprehension, gathering the courage to speak the words.
"Drakzen and... T-The Demon King, Xalathas..." she whispered.
’Drakzen again...?’ I thought.
He was the traveling devil that interrupted our exam at Sephyr when he made a pack of werewolves attack the students’ groups.
Thanks to Jackson’s story, I knew that Xalathas, their demon king, wasn’t in our world with the rest of his commanders, as his mission was to send them to conquer the world so that he could materialize here.
That only left Drakzen as the culprit for messing with Nessa’s demonic energy, and honestly, it pissed me off quite a bit.
’This is the second time this guy messes with our school activities...’ I thought with annoyance.
"Mel, keep Nessa company... I’ll be back before the final," I said, quickly leaving the room without elaborating where I was going.
I made my way out of the arena and took flight above the city until the relic bracelet stopped pointing toward Nessa.
’Alright, I’m out of her range...’ I thought, staring at the bracelet as I waited for it to move.
’Nothing...’
Seeing that the bracelet was dormant, I started flying away from the arena and scouting around the perimeter.
Suddenly, the bracelet moved slightly to one side, and I quickly propelled myself to the area.
When I got there, I saw a man wearing black robes standing on the edge of a rock.
The City of Kyotora had been built on a massive hill, so it was pretty high for random people to be wandering around the edges.
Nonetheless, I instantly recognized the robes and descended a few feet away from the figure.
"If it isn’t the professor..." the man said without turning around to look at me.
"I would say it’s good to see you again, but I’m not one for telling lies, Drakzen..." I replied.
The devil chuckled and turned around, making me notice how he had hidden all of his demonic features, including his horns, which were now invisible.
He was doing the same thing that Jackson and Nessa did when hiding their demonic energy. However, his reasons for it were different than those two.
Jackson and Nessa hid their energy because they wanted to live as humans, while Drakzen was only hiding it to infiltrate human cities without being detected by powerful mages.
"I don’t feel like fighting you right now, so how about you leave and bother me some other day?" I asked.
It’s not that I didn’t want to get rid of him, but fighting Drakzen in a capital city with hundreds of thousands of people sounded like an awful idea.
