My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 209: Qualifiers
Chapter 209: Qualifiers
When the students kept preparing for the World Tournament, I received yet another knock on my door from Melina and both of her roommates.
The princess’s friends already knew that she had gotten the "Sage" title, so Yuki and Eve had been training with her the entire time.
However, they got to the point where they wanted to learn something that could help them more in battle.
I was already helping other groups of students in their training, so I saw no reason to decline them and took them to End Forest for extra training.
Eve had been practicing nature magic after Melina taught her how to do it, and surprisingly, she had a really high affinity for it.
’Well, an elf who has an affinity to nature sounds right...’ I thought.
Yuki, on the other hand, didn’t have any types of magic that she could say she mastered. In fact, most of her spells had the same potency and power, no matter what element she was casting.
At one point, I taught the elven princess a spell that would pull out roots from underground and bind her opponents, and while she practiced it with Melina, I focused on Yuki.
The black-haired princess was talented in learning new spells, but her MP just wasn’t enough to cast anything significant.
At one point, Yoru came out of my shadow unannounced and began inspecting Yuki closer, making her a bit nervous as the moon wolf carefully sniffed her.
[Shadow magic!] Yoru exclaimed, using telepathy to talk to me inside my head.
"Hmm? Do you think she should learn shadow magic?" I asked my companion.
Yoru nodded fervently, saying he could sniff powerful shadows around Yuki, whatever that meant.
"You are smelling the shadows...? You know what, never mind. Sure, let’s try it..." I said, somewhat confused.
I mean, anyone would be confused if they heard someone talking about the "smell of shadows," but Yoru was obviously different and could detect things that other people wouldn’t be able to.
In reality, I hadn’t even practiced shadow magic that much, so I only knew the spells that I had seen Yoru casting before.
A simple one was using my own shadow to create a black spike that would rise from the ground and stab my opponents, but it wasn’t that useful since I could only do it with my shadow.
That’s when Yoru stepped in to show a different one, opening his mouth wide as an orb of black and purple shadows generated between his open jaw.
Then, after a few seconds of charging, he shot the orb as fast as a bullet toward a tree, leaving a gaping hole in the trunk before shattering to pieces, damaging the ones behind it, too.
"What the...?" I pondered aloud, witnessing Yoru’s spell for the first time.
It took me a few seconds to comprehend, but once I could imagine the shadows turning into an orb in front of my palm, I was able to copy Yoru’s spell.
Right after I shot my first shadow orb and took down another tree, I turned to look at Yuki, and she had a massive ball of shadows charged in front of her palm.
The black-haired princess looked nervous as more and more shadows kept accumulating inside the orb, making her sweat in panic.
"Let it go. You have to push that energy out of your body!" I exclaimed, making her close her eyes and focus.
Not even three seconds later, Yuki’s shadow orb shot out straight toward a massive rock, generating a black explosion that looked like a dome for a few seconds before disappearing.
When we approached the area of impact, everything that had been inside the shadowy explosion had evaporated, even the massive rock.
"Welp... I guess we can say you have an affinity for shadow magic." I commented to the black-haired princess, who looked shocked at her own power.
Of course, she needed a lot more practice on how to control the output of power she put into her spells, but now that we knew what her specialty was, she could focus solely on that.
We kept training for a few more days, with the other group of students occasionally joining us, too.
Honestly, I was working overtime since I had to do the lessons at the academy in the morning and then train with the others the rest of the day, but I was having a bit of fun, so I wasn’t complaining.
Before we knew it, the weeks of preparations had passed, and the qualifier matches commenced.
Most of the students who were participating were second or third-year students, which made sense since freshmen students usually had a lower magic level.
The headmaster said he wanted to choose ten students to participate in the world tournament and explained that winning wasn’t the only requirement to qualify.
The matches were mostly to see the level of magic of each student and then hand-pick the individuals that the headmaster believed had a better chance at the tournament.
Funnily enough, Devon called Melina and me to help him decide who should qualify, saying that "three sages think better than one."
The matches went by quickly, at least the first few, and it was almost too obvious to tell which students had received private lessons from me since their spell-casting and battle senses were just much better than the rest.
In the end, the ten students who would be participating were:
Keiko Lotus
Lucas Vista
Florencia Vista
Gunther Reynolds
Enzo Pizarro
Marco Casetti
Yuki Kyotora
Everiel, also known as Eve.
All of the students that had been training with us the past few days had qualified, leaving two more spots that two third-year students took.
One of them was Larry Windforge, the younger brother of William, the commander of the 1st Knight’s Order.
He was an 18-year-old with a passion for magic, and his dream was to work at the Mage’s Tower, so he had a decent set of skills.
Last but not least, another third-year student called Sonia Storm, who was the youngest sister of Sara Storm, the commander of the 3rd Knight’s Order.
’That’s a pretty solid team. I wonder how powerful the students from the other academies are...’
