Chapter 199: West Port

The following morning, after my first night camping with "Team 1," the group kept on moving toward West Port.

A few monsters got in our way, but the students dispatched them with no problem, as they were all F and E-ranked creatures.

That night, when the students started building their tents, I saw that Florencia used earth magic to raise a small pillar from the ground instead of using the wooden pieces they brought.

’Good, extra points for Florencia...’ I thought.

Using fewer materials and depending on their magic was something that we were required to grade, so I was pretty happy that my group had figured it out so quickly.

I would have been happier if they raised earth walls and made their own rooms, but I could see how that was way more advanced than a simple pillar to hold the tent’s roof.

The next day, we only had a few hours left of traveling before reaching West Port and felt the presence of a monster coming toward us. However, before we could see what it was, it ran away and hid from my "search" spell.

I wasn’t too worried when I saw one monster coming, but seeing it hide its presence from my "search" spell was strange.

’How did that monster know that I felt its presence?’ I thought, somewhat worried.

Still, I didn’t mention anything to the students and let them focus on their test as we were about to get attacked by low-level monsters.

Four hours later, we arrived at West Port and noticed that we were the second group to make it, with Melina’s being the first.

Her group’s chaperone was a woman named "Rell," who taught "world politics" at the academy and looked almost like she was in shock.

"How was your trip?" I asked Melina as she approached my team.

"Quite relaxing!" she replied, making me glance at her chaperone again, who didn’t seem relaxed at all.

Melina chuckled awkwardly and said that she might have overdone it a bit. Elaborating further, she told me that she felt something strange coming towards them, making Melina cast a gravity spell on the entire team along with the carriage and float high up in the air.

"It just felt really dangerous, and I panicked and made everyone fly for a little bit..." Melina continued, her face blushing slightly.

However, I also felt a dangerous presence that ended up hiding away from our team, and seeing that Melina had felt something similar made me more cautious.

"Yoru," I called my companion, making him get out of my shadow, startling everyone from my team, who weren’t aware that my moon wolf had been hiding there all this time.

I asked my companion to scout the area around West Port to make sure that the other teams could arrive safely.

We were supposed to spend one night in town and then return the next day, which would take us another three days to get to the academy.

’I’m pretty sure we took care of all high-level monsters in this area before the test... But a monster that could hide his presence from me is new.’ I thought.

Melina told me that as soon as she made everyone on her team float, the strange presence disappeared. However, it wasn’t that it ran away, but "hid" from the princess.

The only way to hide someone’s presence from my "search" spell was to completely stop the flow of MP through their bodies, which wasn’t a simple thing to do.

Even people who weren’t adept at magic had a bit of MP flowing through them, and stopping its course wasn’t a simple feat since it took a lot of effort to get it under control.

The day kept passing by, and the other teams arrived at West Port safely.

When the students were sent to the building where they would be staying, I called all of the chaperone professors to warn them about the strange monster’s presence on the road.

We sat down around a large table at the inn, which had been fully reserved for the students of the academy for one day, and explained to them what I had felt.

Honestly, if I had told them about this a few weeks before, most of the professors would have dismissed my concerns, calling me a rookie or something. However, that wasn’t the case.

Thanks to the reputation I had built up to that point, all of the professors took my warning seriously and began strategizing what to do in case of an emergency.

The monster’s presence was at least A-ranked, but hiding its MP from being detected would put it at an S-rank for me.

Moreover, Melina had also felt a similar presence, but there was no way for us to know if it was the same.

The roads that our teams took were quite far from each other, so if a monster traveled from our location to hers, or vice versa, it would take hours to get to the other road.

"There could be more than one, so we should be real cautious..." I said to the teachers.

I gave the professors some potions of every type in case they needed them later, and as everyone went to their rooms to get some rest, I called Vespera with telepathy.

["Hey, Vesp. Are you busy?"] I said in my head.

["Nope. I’m all done tending to my webs and was gathering some materials for Reinar..."] she replied with a carefree tone.

["Good. I might need your help for a bit..."] I continued, explaining to her what I felt on the road.

A few seconds later, Vespera teleported right to my location and left to scout the surrounding area with Yoru.

I thought that maybe I was being paranoid, but I was a professor who was in charge of my students’ lives, so I preferred being paranoid and cautious to being carefree and having them potentially get hurt.

’It’s one thing for a monster to be after me, but if they go for my students...’ I thought, clenching my teeth with a bit of anger.
