Chapter 197: Test Preparations

A few days passed after the start of the academy semester, and during one of my breaks, the headmaster called me into his office.

There was a special test that all second-year students had to go through, where they would be split into groups and go hunting for monsters in a designated area.

They called it the "Hunting Tournament" since the student with the most monsters hunted would get a reward, recognizing their prowess. However, that wasn’t the main objective of the test.

Devon explained that they usually held the tournament in the woods that separated the capital and a small port town to the west, which was coincidentally called "West Port."

It was the same port town that the capital used to import and export goods when Port Town Blue was under the Kraken’s threat, and it was the closest settlement to the capital.

Each group of students would be accompanied by a professor, who would take notes of the individuals in the group and give them a grade based on their performance.

The students were required to drive a cart from the capital to West Port, protecting their respective teachers and using their powers to survive the three-day trail.

The headmaster explained the event and asked me to accompany two other professors who were heading to the woods that day to clear it out of any monster that was higher than C-rank.

While it was a test for the students to hunt down monsters, he didn’t want any casualties or accidents, so Devon always sent teachers a few days before the test to clear it out of any potential threat.

That same day, I teleported with two other professors to the outskirts of the capital and made our way to the woods.

One of the teachers was a woman with long brown hair named "Viela," who taught "magical practice" at the academy.

The other was a burly man called "Bruno" and was the professor for the "swordsmanship" class.

Apart from them, Yoru was also with us, although he was hanging out inside my shadow for the time being.

Gina had been working with Reinar and Jen at End Forest, so I didn’t want to bother her to come over just to clear the area of low-level monsters.

While we looked for the monsters, I used my "search" spell, and Professor Viela was instantly interested in learning it.

I didn’t mind teaching it to her, but I wasn’t sure if she would be able to cast it. The only reason Melina did was because she had that innate talent and skill to copy any type of magic.

Nonetheless, I noticed I underestimated the professor when I saw her casting it ten minutes later.

Professor Burno wasn’t adept at magic. Although he knew a few basic spells that could help him in battle, he primarily relied on his weapon.

We scouted around that entire day and took down a few B-ranked monsters, which were weaker than I remembered. We also spotted C-ranked and D-ranked creatures, but we let those be as students shouldn’t have a problem dealing with them.

The C-ranks could prove to be a challenge for some of them, but with a professor as chaperone, it wouldn’t be as dangerous.

Of course, we also spotted E, F, and G-ranked monsters, but they were so weak that they were pretty much invisible to me.

After we made sure that the path was mostly cleared of monsters, we returned to the academy and told Headmaster Devon about it.

The test would begin at the end of the week, and during those days of preparations, I was swarmed with students almost constantly, asking for advice and tutoring with their magic practice.

Nonetheless, I still found time to sneak away from their gazes and go to Melina’s room to hang out.

On the day of the test, the headmaster pulled out the names of the students out of a hat to make their teams.

I was going to be the chaperone for "Team 1," which consisted of four students.

Keiko, the princess from Lotus.

Enzo, a noble from Vista.

Florencia, the princess of Vista.

Gunther, a noble from the Droman Empire.

Out of curiosity, I looked at Melina to see which team she had been chosen for, and she was sent to "Team 3," escorted by a woman named Professor Rell.

Yuki, one of her roommates and the princess of Kyotora, was also part of her team.

The other two were nobles, one from Lotus and the other from a nation called Balinesia.

All teams would leave at the same time, although they would be taking different paths to reach West Port so that the groups wouldn’t overlap with each other in the middle of the road.

I boarded the wooden cart from my team and waited for them to get everything in order.

The students had to check the carriage and make sure that everything was working correctly, drive the horses through the road, make it safely to West Port, where they would leave a box of supplies, and then return to the academy.

Each team had a small supply of beef jerky as food rations, which could last all six days if we counted the ride back. However, students were allowed to hunt and cook their own food if they wanted something more nutritious.

Once the team was ready to depart, Enzo took the reigns of the horses and said he had some experience riding carriages before.

’Mhmm, extra points for Enzo...’ I thought as I scribbled on a small board, holding a piece of paper.

Gunther joined Enzo at the front and sat beside him while Keiko and Florencia sat inside the carriage with me, discussing their next course of action.

As a chaperone professor, I wasn’t allowed to give them any answers or help unless they were in real danger, of course, so all I could do was watch them and take notes.

Devon told me that I could give them hints if they seemed lost, but my team seemed pretty confident when we left, so I believed it would be a smooth ride.
