Chapter 38: Mission Assignment

With the job taken care of, I returned to the gate where I found Luna and Kiki waiting for me. Luna greeted me with a polite smile, while Kiki looked at me with a face that seemed to ask, ’How are you not injured?’

"See, Kiki? I told you he would be fine," Luna said, putting on a joyous smile, which caused Kiki to pout and cross her arms.

"Hmph. You were the one who was worried about him, talking about how we should go back for him."

Luna’s cheerful expression quickly faded into one of embarrassment as she desperately tried to cover Kiki’s mouth, her face turning beet red.

"Kiki, you can dispel the illusion now," I said, interrupting their banter.

"O-okay, but did you seriously beat all those guys by yourself?"

"Would I be here if I didn’t?"

"I suppose not," she answered.

Exiting through the gate, we were met with Mr. Samuels’ unamused face. Luna, who was holding the flag, promptly handed it over to him, to which he declared, "Congratulations, you are the first group to make it out of the dungeon."

After a while of waiting for the other groups to emerge, Mr. Samuels let out a huge sigh and, with a look of annoyance, entered the dungeon. He returned not long after, dragging the three boys. He didn’t even bat an eye at the branding I gave them.

The three of them were covered in vines that looked partially embedded in their skin. Mr. Samuels pulled them out and proceeded to drag them to the infirmary.

In a stroke of luck, we had managed to win the competition. Amelia’s group was fortunate enough not to run into anyone inside the dungeon, and luckily, the dungeon they entered had a flag. Hikari’s group also didn’t encounter anyone, but unfortunately, they were unable to find a flag in their dungeon.

I called it luck, but it really wasn’t; it was all because of the false information I fed Logan, which he leaked to Rafael. My ace in the hole for all of that was Kiki. I had her use her system and her charm to deceive Logan into thinking she was on his side.

She clung to him like a leech, and after a while, it became increasingly obvious that he was falling for her. With her Illusion system, she could make him see what she wanted him to see.

From there, all she had to do was feed him false information about which dungeon the class was going to choose, and in turn, he would give her information about Rafael.

Apparently, Rafael was planning for this competition to be an official battle between him and Amelia. Without Kiki, none of this would have been possible.

But the most interesting thing about the whole situation was the proud look on Kiki’s face, devoid of any hint of guilt. I got the feeling she enjoyed deceiving people; perhaps it had something to do with her perceived weakness.

The smile on her face was faint but lingering as we made our way back to our class.

Over the next couple of days, I noticed visible changes in Logan and his group. While it wasn’t a full turnaround, the changes in how he acted in class were evident. Now that he didn’t have Rafael’s backing, he had no choice but to align himself with Amelia.

The only problem was Natasha; she and her group of seven were completely loyal to Cassian.

"We have to do something about them," I heard Logan, of all people, say to Amelia. It was relatively early in the morning, just before homeroom, and not many people were in the class. "I know I’m not one to talk, but... we can’t have traitors among us. We are the only class with students like that."

The other classes were far less accepting of certain things than Amelia’s. From what I heard, Yuan ran his class like a dictatorship. The students of Class Yin had been showing up with strange injuries for weeks now, and they weren’t even permitted to speak with anyone outside their class.

"I know how you feel, Logan," Amelia said, maintaining the confidence she always had. "But we just need to give them some time; they’ll come around soon enough."

I knew Amelia had a naïve personality, but this was too much. I imagined the truth was far different from what she was saying. The real reason she didn’t do anything was that she couldn’t. As ridiculous as it sounded, Cassian had already claimed them as his own.

That was also the reason I didn’t take action. I had no delusions of grandeur about my own strength; I wouldn’t dare attempt something unless I was a hundred percent confident that I could pin it on someone who couldn’t be traced back to me.

Hence, I was forced to leave it alone. I had seen enough of Cassian to know that a fight with him would be more than just a casual skirmish.

"You keep saying that, but it will never happen!!" Logan was getting increasingly agitated, to the point of shouting.

He always came off as some sort of delinquent. Just as things looked like they were getting a bit too tense, Hikari approached and placed his hands on Logan’s shoulder.

"You should calm down," he said. "Amelia is trying her best. If she says it’s best to leave them alone for now, then it’s best you listen."

Logan shrugged off his hand before returning to his seat.

Ten minutes past the time for homeroom, our teacher, Ms. Cole, still hadn’t arrived. She was late as always. Her tardiness hadn’t improved one bit, and the class did nothing but tolerate it.

When she finally arrived, the time dedicated to homeroom was almost over.

"Good morning, class. I’m sorry for being late."

I noticed the slightest change in her appearance—she looked more serious than usual.

"We don’t have much time, so I’ll get right to it. The school has finally decided on your dungeon assignment."

Her words left no room for discussion as she quickly pulled up the assignment on the smartboard.

Mission Outline

Mission Duration: 4 Months

World: Shae’lyria

World Classification: Medieval-Class World

Mission Objective: Ensure the safety of the people by closing all labyrinths and beasts that have made their way out.

"Your next mission," Ms. Cole said, tapping the smartboard with more enthusiasm than she had ever shown before, "has been decided by the school. You won’t just be closing dungeons anymore; you’ll be saving lives. You’ll finally get to live up to the title of heroes."

Her words reverberated throughout the entire class. Even I was pulled in; it was hard not to be intrigued.

"The world you will be going to is called Shae’lyria; it is a medieval-class world. Your mission is to close all the seasonal labyrinths that have been popping up lately. This mission will last for about four months."
