Chapter 99: Chapter 99 - Seleyena is caught red-handed again

The car ride to the hospital was quiet—but it wasn’t peaceful.

Thalia sat in the back beside Ermond, hands clasped together on her lap, eyes fixed outside the window as streetlights passed by in streaks.

’Why is my chest... weird?’ she thought, pressing a palm lightly against her sternum. There wasn’t pain. Just... something. A dull pressure. An odd discomfort.

She shifted in her seat.

’He’s injured. So what? That doesn’t mean anything.’

But the words didn’t land. Her head knew that. Her heart, apparently, didn’t get the memo.

Cruxius wasn’t her friend. He wasn’t her lover. He wasn’t anything good, not after what he did to her.

And yet...

’I’m not supposed to care,’ she reminded herself again. ’He’s the reason I’m stuck here, trapped in a mansion like some caged bird.’

Still, she kept glancing at the dashboard clock.

Still, her fingers kept fidgeting.

Still, her stupid heart kept beating faster the closer they got.

The car slowed down in front of the emergency entrance, and Ermond was out before the wheels even fully stopped. She followed quickly behind, jogging to keep up as his long legs stormed through the corridor.

The hospital reeked of antiseptic and cold professionalism. White walls. White floors. Harsh lighting that made everything feel sterile.

Thalia hated it already.

She walked fast, just behind Ermond as his steps echoed through the corridor. Her hand brushed against her chest again.

’Why does it feel tight?’ she wondered, confused. ’He’s not dying. Probably just bruised or something.’

Still, the feeling didn’t leave her.

’Maybe it’s guilt. Maybe it’s anger. Maybe I’m just tired.’

But that wasn’t it. Not really.

Her fingers curled into a soft fist. She told herself she wasn’t worried.

She didn’t care.

And then the doors opened.

Room 117.

What she saw inside knocked every breath from her lungs.

Cruxius was there—alive, upright, and in one piece. He wasn’t groaning, or wincing, or even being checked by doctors.

He was kissing someone.

The woman leaned over him, long fingers slipping into his hair, lips locked against his like the world outside didn’t exist.

She was tall—taller than Thalia, for sure. Long legs wrapped in tight black trousers beneath a crisp white doctor’s coat that opened slightly at the waist.

The slit revealed just enough curve of her hips to look intentional. She had that kind of beauty that wasn’t soft—it was sharp, structured. Like she knew the effect she had and didn’t apologize for it.

Her back arched slightly as she leaned into him, coat shifting to reveal a fitted blouse beneath, tight across her chest, the top few buttons undone.

A necklace glinted faintly around her neck, drawing the eye downward—right where his hand rested on her waist.

Her name tag read: Dr. Seleyena V.

Thalia froze in the doorway.

Something snapped deep inside her chest.

She didn’t breathe. Didn’t blink.

Her heart literally skipped. Not metaphorically. Not dramatically. It missed a beat and came back with a violent thump.

’Why... does this stuffy feeling?’

She didn’t want to look. But she couldn’t stop.

Seleyena finally pulled back, lips slightly red, her dark eyes half-lidded and confident as hell. Her gaze slid lazily toward the door—and then stopped on Thalia.

"D-Doctor Seleyena?" It was a moment of realization when Thalia suddenly recognized that woman, who was none other than the same doctor who had consoled her, helped her in difficult times.

And now that same doctor was kissing the man who had brought her pain before and even now.

’!’

Seleyena’s breath caught the moment she recognized the people in the doorway.

Her eyes widened, already hazy from the kiss, and her entire body stiffened like a wire pulled tight. Her confidence shattered on the spot.

It was as if she instantly recognized the girl standing at the door.

"Th-Thalia...?"

She took an awkward step back, nearly tripping over her own feet. The crimson flush on her cheeks darkened. Her hand flew to her lips as if to hide the kiss that had already happened.

Ermond stepped inside with a cold expression, his eyes sweeping from Seleyena to Cruxius, with all the calm of a judge before a verdict.

Seleyena looked like her brain short-circuited. A tiny cartoon-like puff of panic seemed to escape her head. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Just a tiny squeak.

Then she turned on her heel, coat swishing behind her like she was about to flee the crime scene.

But Cruxius caught her wrist effortlessly.

"Don’t run," he said with that usual lazy grin. "You’re a doctor. Aren’t you supposed to be composed?"

"I-I was just checking your—your pulse—!" Seleyena stammered, trying to pull away. Her voice cracked halfway through.

Ermond stepped forward. "What is the meaning of this, Master?"

Cruxius leaned back into the pillow like he owned the room, his fingers still loosely holding Seleyena’s hand. "Can’t you see?" he said. "She’s my doctor."

"I can see that," Ermond replied flatly. "What I fail to see is any treatment being given."

Cruxius smirked. "She was massaging my lips. Giving me oxygen. It’s a very... personal recovery plan."

Seleyena looked like she might faint.

"That’s not—! I didn’t—!" she squeaked, finally yanking her hand free.

Thalia hadn’t moved an inch.

Her eyes were still locked on the scene. Her hands hung at her sides, fingers slightly curled. Her chest felt tight again—tight in a way she couldn’t name.

’Why does it sting? Why am I even feeling this?’

Ermond shook his head slowly, like a disappointed parent. "They really don’t have dignity, Master."

Cruxius tilted his head, gaze flicking briefly toward Thalia before resting back on the butler. "No," he said, almost mockingly. "Definitely not. Especially not when a woman like her approaches me."

Seleyena’s breath hitched. She stared at him like he’d just slapped her with words.

That was when her pride finally caught up with her embarrassment. Her lips trembled, and without another word, she turned and rushed out the door, shoes tapping hard against the white tile floor.

The silence left behind was ugly. Thick.

Thalia didn’t speak.

Didn’t glare.

Didn’t frown.

But her heart was thudding so loud she could barely hear anything else.

Cruxius leaned his head back, closing his eyes for a moment as he was expecting Thalia’s arrival here, and given the timing being so perfect, he added, "Can you leave us for a few moments, Ermond? I need to talk with Thalia...."
