My Mansion of Gorgeous Maids in Another World -
Chapter 42: Chaos Confirmed
Chapter 42: Chaos Confirmed
Astride his horse, Jett leaned forward, bracing for the steep descent. His maids swung back into their saddles, mirroring him. The four mounts reared, hooves slicing air before launching downhill at breakneck speed.
Mist swallowed everything. Seconds later the familiar high‑pitched buzzing cut through the gray, and Jett’s vision snapped clear—there was the fairy whose full, bouncing breasts had bounced against his forearm far longer than propriety allowed.
Their horses thundered up behind her, startling the pixie. She whirled just as Jett’s arm shot out and tucked her snug beneath his armpit. Her wide eyes locked on him, shock written across her tiny face.
"You’re riding shotgun with me, short‑stack. While I’m around, nothing’s gonna kill you," he drawled.
"Be honored," Mia added, tone velvety and sure.
Is she jealous of the fairy? Jett chuckled inwardly.
"Eek! I’m super‑duper honored and also super worried! I feel really, really bad because I told you the Heart of the Forest was totally the safest place, but now it looks like it’s under attack!" the fairy babbled, lip quivering.
"Could be we’re just guessing. Never know," Jett said with a shrug.
"No way—it’s gotta be something real! It’s soooo weird!" she squeaked.
The slope ended in a near free‑fall, and their mounts plunged into the valley floor. Jett glanced down—every hoof sank ankle‑deep into living shadows, yet the horses never faltered.
I knew horses were smart, but my boys are next‑level.
He swung down and scanned the haze. Metal rang to his right—Noctlisa was already moving, blade meeting a blue talon. With a deft twist she reversed the grip and severed the entire arm. A faint scream echoed, then the fog swallowed the sound.
She scooped up the twitching limb and lobbed it to Mia. The elf maid caught it gracefully, keen eyes dissecting every scale.
How are these two so in sync? Did they spar before? Hell, is a threesome on the table? Anyway, Noctlisa’s faster than me—I’m still green compared to her.
"Indeed, a lizardfolk arm—though not the breed you bested on the road, Master Talon. I surmise it is a stronger variant," Mia reported, presenting the limb.
"Honestly? I don’t know jack. But we just confirmed two things: the Heart’s under attack, and tougher lizards are here. That lone idiot backing off tells me they’re not dumb."
"Quite so, Master Talon. Shall we advance? I can carve us a safe route. Should my command waver, I will still sense foes and dampen the mist," she offered.
"Yeah." Holy smokes, I’m blessed—these two are monsters.
Mia’s lips curved in a serene smile. Closing her eyes, she stood tall—regal as an elven queen—and let her mana pulse outward. As Jett suspected, she seized dominion over Artemis Forest, bending it to her will.
"Um—maybe I can help! I can chat with the Sentinel and pinky‑promise it the elf maid’s totally cool!" the fairy chirped, hand shooting up.
"Your aid is unnecessary," Mia said, eyes still shut. A heartbeat later she opened them, her crimson eyes glowing. "This forest now bows to me, and therefore to Master Talon."
"Umu!" The fairy bobbed into a hasty bow.
Umu? Jett wondered.
Mia swept a hand toward the Heart. Fog thinned, trees gliding aside to form a clear path.
"More bastards closing in, Master. Let me take point till we reach the Heart," Noctlisa growled, horse ears twitching.
"Do it. Mia, stay in the saddle and keep the forest under your thumb—you’ll spot trouble first," Jett ordered.
"Master Talon, may I eliminate a few beforehand?" she asked.
"The balance here’s already shot. Go wild."
Hands stuffed in his pockets, Jett adopted his so‑called noble gait and strode ahead. Noctlisa prowled a step in front, intercepting anything Mia’s assaults missed.
The elven maid had turned everything around her into weapons, even the mist.
She conjured pockets of fog at the lizardfolk’s blind spots, lancing through to drop entire squads. A few burrowed beneath the earth, liquefying soil to sidestep her control. Roots surged at her call to snare them, but the reptiles twisted that trick back—trees crashed across Jett’s path.
Noctlisa stepped in, blade flashing. One whirlwind later the toppled trunks lay in neat blocks, and, with a final sweep, she blasted the debris back where it came from.
"Clean, Master," she grunted.
Jett rewarded her with an appreciative smile.
The fairy’s jaw dropped. His maids are amazing! The elf was expected, but this horse woman is crazy strong! And their master—there seems to be way more to him than lightning bolts! Wowsies!
The path opened onto a vast canopy. Near a great gray trunk crowned in golden leaves, fairies and exhausted humans fought to stem a tide of enemies—the humans’ line thinning fast.
So many fairies seem like a good sign. As for the humans, I can’t tell—maybe not many answered the call, or their ranks have already thinned. But I don’t see bodies, do I? Our arrival must have tipped the lizards off. How should I play this?
"Girls," Jett called, "there’s got to be a mastermind behind those monsters, right?"
"Prob’ly, Master," Noctlisa grunted.
"Indeed, Master Talon," Mia added with a graceful nod.
"Yes! Totally, totally!" the fairy chirped.
"Hop in the carriage and see if you can steer the forest from inside. You can use my floor," Jett said to his head maid.
At the prospect of entering her master’s domain, Mia’s face lit up. "As you command, Master Talon!"
Jett stretched, loosening his tie. "We’ll hold the front line and keep the mansion safe. Those idiots might try to swamp the carriage."
"B‑But—" the fairy squeaked.
Jett met her eyes. "Mia’s more than enough for now."
Reassured by the certainty in his voice, the fairy nodded and trusted him. Awwies! I dunno why, but there’s this sparkly something in him that makes me totally, totally trust him—like I’ll do whatever he says, pinky promise!
The best part was that no one beside her knew her name!
That raised the question: who had been the real meanie all along?
