Chapter 40: Meanie!

The woman’s sudden appearance caught Jett completely off guard. He’d been told this continent was dominated by humans, yet she looked straight out of a storybook. Her slender body was wrapped in a short emerald skirt, a wide wooden‑hued ribbon cinched tight around her hourglass waist.

She had short, pale‑green hair, wide eyes, and stood a shade over five feet tall. Everything about her was willowy—except the generous swell of her chest, two massive "apples" straining against her bodice.

"Thanks for lending a hand to squishy humans in need!" she chirped, bowing with her ankles pressed together.

Jett grinned. "No need to thank me—I volunteered."

"Could you pretty please help us stop any more ouchies? We fairies of the Artemis Forest will totally never forget you! We’ll even carve your name on our super‑special Sentinel Tree," she said, half cheerful and half solemn, bowing again.

She doesn’t realize I’m the Warden. Might be smart to mingle with people like her and widen my horizons. Still, Mia’s an elf—no telling how this fairy will react.

The fairy had no idea who Jett really was, or that an elven princess served as his maid. He’d instructed all his attendants to call him only "Master," and Mia to address him as "Master Talon," keeping certain facts under wraps. He wasn’t ready to break that rule.

"I’m traveling with passengers," he said. "I need to drop them in a safe village before I can help a one‑of‑a‑kind guest like you."

"No worries! Tons of humans already said yes, so everyone can buddy up! The forest’s heart is the safest spot—pinky promise! Lots of folks dream of seeing it once in their lives—it’ll be super exciting!" Her voice bubbled like a carnival hawker who’d just chugged pixie sugar water—bright, fizzy, and almost too eager.

"Tempting offer," Jett said with a smile. "Let me run it by my household."

"Okey‑dokey!"

He turned, climbed into his carriage, and shut the door—right in front of the fairy’s tiny nose. She puffed out her cheeks, arms folded.

"Meanie!"

Inside, frightened children still clung to the women shielding them. The women offered Jett faint smiles, silently assuring him they were fine. The adult men, meanwhile, looked like oversized kids—equal parts awed and terrified by his power.

I figured he’d use his earthquake power to uproot the lizards... but he summoned a storm! Maybe he’s hiding a storm beast. This noble is insane, thought Roberto.

Jett spared everyone a quick glance, then led his maids upstairs. Once the door shut, he told them about the fairy. Mia and Noctlisa had already sensed her, but he filled in the details.

"What does having your name carved on a Sentinel Tree mean?" he asked.

Mia’s smile was serene. "It is an honor bestowed by each fairy tribe, Master Jett. Once a name is carved on a Sentinel Tree, its bearer is forever a friend to that tribe and can never lose their way in that forest."

"Nice perk. Do fairies normally show up on continents like this?"

"Every land has its sentinels," she explained softly. "They give rise to a race that embodies the terrain. In most forests—aside from the Elven Forest—those sentinels are fairies. Viewed another way, kingdoms and clans exist for their races, while sentinels and their offspring exist for the land itself."

"Got it. Means something’s off in the Artemis Forest, or they wouldn’t be asking for help."

"That appears to be the case, Master Jett."

"Will your appearance shock her?"

"Yes. The World Tree chose us, and fairies revere that choice. They hold elves in the highest esteem."

Jett narrowed his eyes. Keeping Mia hidden on the upper floor didn’t sit right with him—especially now, when she’d discovered her relatives might be centuries older or long dead. Blood was still blood.

He shrugged. "It is what it is. Let’s see how she acts with you beside me."

Mia’s smile brightened, and she bowed low. "Thank you, Master Jett."

Jett headed back downstairs and addressed the commoners. He relayed the fairy’s request and said anyone was welcome to travel to the heart of the Artemis Forest. As he expected, not everyone was thrilled.

"If they care about us, why didn’t they save us?" someone muttered.

Fair point. But to fairies, humans and beasts are probably the same. Humans hunt animals for meat; fairies see no problem when beasts hunt humans. It’s the law of the forest, and as Warden I can’t tilt the scales too far in humanity’s favor.

He felt for the commoners yet had to think bigger. They could decide whether to follow him into the forest; if they opted for a village, he’d postpone the fairy’s plea.

"Think it over. I’m going to speak with the fairy," he said, stepping outside.

The moment he did, her voice hit him like a pebble.

"Meanie! Why’d you slam the door? I haven’t seen much of the big, scary human world yet!"

Mia emerged from the mansion, smiling coolly. "Might I ask that you refrain from raising your voice at Master Jett?"

The fairy’s face drained of color; her gossamer wings quivered. "Y‑Yes! Hehe! Just kidding around! Everyone loves petite, loud fairies, right? Hehe."

I doubt that, little fairy, Jett thought.

The fairy seemed to read Jett’s thoughts; she puffed out her cheeks and fixed him with wide, pleading eyes. Jett waved a hand, brushing off her silent appeal.

"So, what’s going on? I need to know what I’m walking into," Jett said.

The fairy cupped her chin like a pint‑size detective and pondered for a heartbeat. "Hmmm... big, scaly lizard people are popping up everywhere! They’re dunking humans and stealing their land. The more folks get hurt, the more lizards show up—super bad news! Fancy humans like you haven’t stepped in yet, so it’s kinda weird."

"Humans like me?" Jett asked.

The fairy bobbed her eyebrows. "Humans in fancy clothes like yours—hehe."
