Chapter 322: 322 cameras

In the afternoon, Chen Xu received another call from Luo Xiyun, asking him to come over.

He said somewhat helplessly, “It looks like I won’t be able to visit the data center today.”

The data center occupied a very important position in his future business empire. The era of cloud computing and artificial intelligence was approaching, and those with larger storage capacities, stronger computing powers, and faster networks would win the competition.

Many of the technologies he planned to develop in the future relied on artificial intelligence, or more precisely, on computing power. Compared to the high costs of supercomputers, building a data center was more cost-effective and the unused space could be leased out to offset some of the expenses.

Recently, he had devoted most of his energy to the construction of the data center. He had to personally oversee the entire construction scheme he had devised.

Chen Xu arrived at Yunxu Company, only to find that Luo Xiyun was not there. An employee mentioned she was next door.

Next door were two of Yunxu’s subsidiaries, one focused on VR gaming and the other on VR videos. Luo Xiyun was quick to action; she had split these two departments upon returning from the electronics expo to better promote these businesses.

Luo Xiyun was at the VR video company. He walked over and saw a group of people gathered there.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“Mr. Chen,” the employees called out in unison.

Standing in the middle, Luo Xiyun was tinkering with a machine. Upon seeing him, she joyfully said, “Look, the VR camera is finally made.”

“You move fast,” Chen Xu said, surprised. He walked over and looked at the device which was quite different from typical cameras, being larger with a supporting stand and, most notably, having three lenses.

The camera was obviously assembled and looked a bit rough.

The technology involved was sophisticated, especially the algorithm. The principle was to use the three lenses to capture images from different angles and then use a special algorithm to convert these into three-dimensional images, similar to what is seen through VR glasses.

He hadn’t expected Luo Xiyun to actually pull it off, considering the complexity of the algorithm. Without playback functionality, it definitely couldn’t reproduce everything perfectly.

Luo Xiyun handed him a pair of glasses and said, “This is what I just recorded, take a look.”

Chen Xu put on the glasses, powered them up, and opened the video. He saw Luo Xiyun’s image appear before him. To his eyes, there were some discrepancies from her real appearance. However, it wasn’t a big issue, noticeable only to those like him who were very familiar with her.

“Not bad,” he said as he took off the glasses and sincerely added, “Congratulations, with this camera, you can solve the content issue for VR.”

Luo Xiyun expressed some regret, “However, the machine is still not perfect. It needs more data to continuously adjust the algorithm.”

“To achieve this level is already quite good,” Chen Xu responded, “Right now, the most important thing is to increase VR-related content. With content, the glasses will sell.”

Luo Xiyun understood this logic, nodded, and said, “I’m already scouting directors, planning to film a short movie to test the waters and see how it performs.”

In two words: money burning.

However, this was a necessary expense in the early stages. Once the sales of the first-generation “Vision Future” reached a certain level, it would be easy to recoup this money.

Chen Xu changed the subject, “How’s the game side doing?”

Xuyun Company was advancing faster in the game segment. They had already developed a 3D game engine based on VR and had so far produced three small games.

As for creating a large-scale game comparable to AAA titles, that was still a way off. It was estimated that only the most high-end personal computers on the market could run them, not to mention the need for a development team.

Mentioning the gaming content made Luo Xiyun a bit happier. She stated, “Recently, several game development teams have been in touch with us. We’re discussing now, and a few already show an intention to collaborate.”

Professional matters are best left to professionals. The development of games was definitely in the hands of professional game development teams. In an ideal scenario, Yunxu Company would only provide technical support and turn the VR glasses into a platform.

If there really weren’t any game development teams willing to collaborate, then Yunxu Company would have to do it themselves.

Compared to the challenging video content, the initial conditions for gaming were indeed better. Those with insight knew that VR was one of the future directions of game development.

……

Chen Xu and Luo Xiyun returned to her office.

She asked, “When will your data center be completed?”

“It will take at least eight months,” Chen Xu responded.

Luo Xiyun adjusted some plans in her mind, then brought up another matter, “A venture capitalist approached us yesterday wanting to invest.”

Chen Xu asked curiously, “What’s their offer?”

“One hundred million US dollars for a thirty percent stake.”

Chen Xu laughed, “That’s a lion’s mouth indeed.”

Yunxu Company had already spent several hundred million, including the 500 million Luo Xiyun borrowed and what Chen Xu invested–totalling over a billion. The product was made, its performance was evident, yet their valuation was only in the twenty billions, which was quite undervaluing.

The first generation of VR glasses also possessed some black technologies, like the chip and its wireless transmission technology.

The glasses connected to the main device through a wireless link, not Bluetooth, but a new type of wireless transmission technology–with higher transmission rates, no delay, stable connection, and a maximum connection range of fifty meters.

Just these two technology patents were worth a lot of money.

Luo Xiyun stated, “Before I run out of funds on hand, I won’t bring in venture capital.”

“By that time, we probably won’t need the venture capital,” Chen Xu was confident about the future of “Vision Future.” The game market was huge, and companies like Penguin had become giants primarily through gaming revenues.

Luo Xiyun remarked, “To enter markets of other countries, we need to bring in some global partners.”

Chen Xu nodded in agreement. After all, it was her business venture, so it was up to her to make the decisions.

However, if they continued down the path he had set out, once their relationship was exposed in the future, she might be affected by his influence and face suppression from foreign entities.

Luo Xiyun suddenly asked, “Are you free this Sunday?”

Chen Xu replied, “As long as you ask me, I’m always free.”

“My grandmother would like to invite you for a meal.”

“Meeting the family, I like it.”
