Chapter 272 - Chapter 272 272 Brought it upon oneself

Chapter 272: 272 Brought it upon oneself Chapter 272: 272 Brought it upon oneself Chen Xu had spent nearly a day and had finally climbed over those mountains. From far away, he could see the landing craft, as well as the camp beside it. Both on the landing craft and the camp surface were huge logos that proved they were products of the same company.

“They must be alright.”

He was thrilled. When they had landed that day, the photos taken by the spacecraft didn’t include that camp. This meant it had been built later.

Actually, he was very confident in Yang Jinxia, but worry clouded his judgment. Until he had seen with his own eyes, he couldn’t completely relax.

Then, he noticed robots working up ahead, which somewhat surprised him. They were at least several kilometers away from the landing craft.

“Could it be that they’ve solved the signal attenuation problem?”

He couldn’t help but speed up, racing towards the direction of the landing craft.

About ten minutes later, he could see two figures in front of the landing craft’s door with his naked eyes. Even though they were clad in thick protective suits, he knew it had to be them.

The vehicle stopped in front of the craft’s door, Chen Xu put on his helmet, opened the cabin door, and stepped out. Through the transparent helmet, he met the gaze of the two women. Reunited after a long time, he showed a delighted smile and said, “Sorry, I’m late.”

It was apparent that they had suffered quite a bit; Bai Jinxuan was smiling, but her eyes were red.

Yang Jinxia seemed very calm, yet she couldn’t hide the joy in her eyes.

Their communication channels were not connected, and they couldn’t hear each other. Bai Jinxuan, nevertheless, managed to read his lips and shook her head, saying, “No worries.”

“Let’s go inside to talk,” Yang Jinxia opened the cabin door and walked in first. Chen Xu followed Bai Jinxuan into the craft.

The door closed behind them, and the three of them stood there, undergoing a round of disinfection and de-radiation before entering the inner door.

Having removed their bulky protective suits, Chen Xu looked at them in their snug silver uniforms and felt a strong urge to embrace them. However, it wouldn’t be appropriate to hug either one first, and even less appropriate to hug both at once.

It was clear that Bai Jinxuan had a lot to say. Her eyes conveyed eagerness and desire, but, mindful of Yang Jinxia beside her, she remained silent.

Yang Jinxia also stayed quiet, just looking at him with a peculiar look in her eyes.

In just a short while, the joy of reunion was diluted, and the atmosphere turned somewhat awkward.

Chen Xu knew they couldn’t continue in silence, so he broke the ice, “It seems you’ve been doing alright here. Anyway, what’s with the robots outside? You found a solution to the signal attenuation?”

Bai Jinxuan remained silent, glancing at Yang Jinxia.

Seeing her action, Chen Xu knew it must have been Yang Jinxia’s accomplishment.

“Hmm,” Yang Jinxia nodded and said, “At this time, you must be hungry, right? I’ll get you something to eat. Let’s talk in there.”

A flicker of annoyance crossed Bai Jinxuan’s expression.

Naturally, the three of them walked shoulder to shoulder towards the interior, with Chen Xu in the middle. While Yang Jinxia wasn’t looking, he gently grasped Bai Jinxuan’s hand, then quickly let go.

For some reason, after he did this, his heart started thumping wildly, and he felt a guilty sensation.

Bai Jinxuan’s face was also slightly flushed.

Soon, they reached the living room.

This base was much smaller than Chen Xu’s, less than one-tenth the size.

As Chen Xu entered the living room, he felt very comfortable; the decor and style were like being back on Earth. He could imagine they must have spent a lot of effort on it.

Next to the living room was the kitchen. Yang Jinxia walked in, and Bai Jinxuan said, “You sit here; I’ll go in and help.”

Chen Xu could only pull over a chair and sit down. There were three chairs beside the table in the living room. The extra one was clearly prepared for him.

“This isn’t what I expected at all.”

He sighed inwardly. It had been over a year since he had seen them in his dreams. He had thought they would embrace in excitement upon reunion, pouring out their feelings of separation…

But now, there was only lingering awkwardness and estrangement.

He knew where the problem lay, yet he was unable to solve it.

“Bringing them together was definitely a mistake,” he thought to himself, deciding to find ways to prevent them from meeting in the future.

As he pondered this, he noticed the two half-eaten dishes on the table and said, “You’re in the middle of a meal?”

“We’ve already finished eating,” Bai Jinxuan poked her head out and said.

Yang Jinxia also responded, “Mhm.”

Chen Xu looked at the two bustling in the kitchen and felt a strange sensation rise within him; he couldn’t help but ask, “Have you two been staying together all this time over the past year?”

“Yes,” Bai Jinxuan said. “Right after we landed, all the others died outside. Only we two were left.”

He wanted to say, “You seem to get along well,” but feared it might come off as smug, so he held back.

To be honest, he was content as long as they hadn’t fought each other to death. Their peaceful cohabitation was a surprising delight.

“I’m in a similar situation,” he said. “We were part of the second exploration team. The landing site was over eight hundred kilometers from here. But to really reach it, you’d have to travel more than two thousand kilometers.”

“All the other team members are dead; only I survived. After I got things settled over there, I came here.”

Bai Jinxuan said, “Good to hear you’re okay.”

At that moment, the food was ready, and Yang Jinxia came out carrying a basin.

There wasn’t anything like a gas stove or induction cooktop in the kitchen; they used a device akin to an oven or microwave for cooking.

“This is lavish?”

Chen Xu was surprised to see meat and vegetables on the plate.

Considering the food reserves on the landing craft consisted of either mushy or vacuum-packed food, one could only dream of fresh vegetables and meat.

“There’s a small culture dish in the warehouse we can use to breed poultry, and we also have some vegetable seeds,” Yang Jinxia said.

Chen Xu, upon hearing this, remembered his spaceship seemed to have these items, too. He had thought them unnecessary, letting them gather dust. It turned out they were for astronauts to improve their living conditions.

He was indeed hungry now and started eating heartily with a spoon.

Mid-meal, he remembered something crucial, “Right, Jinxuan. It’s nearly midnight in reality now. If you sleep this long, won’t there be a problem?”

“I’d like to stay a few more days,” Bai Jinxuan said.

Chen Xu, hearing this, couldn’t come up with any objection and simply said, “Okay.”

“And you?” He turned to Yang Jinxia. As the head of a large corporation with countless tasks awaiting her, she surely couldn’t afford to sleep for too long.

“After I go with you to your place, I’ll head back,” Yang Jinxia said.

“Okay.”

After replying, Chen Xu continued his meal, while Bai Jinxuan and Yang Jinxia sat on either side, both silent, just watching him.

This silence made Chen Xu somewhat uncomfortable, but he harbored no complaints. After all, he had brought this upon himself.
